Nicola Philippaerts really needed to turn on the speed to beat Jessica Springsteen in the $380,000 Rolex Grand Prix CSI***** at the Tryon International Equestrian Center (N.C.) and he did it! There were 10 in the jump-off for the $216,000 Rolex U.S. Open CSI*** Grand Prix at the Rolex Central Park Horse Show, but no could touch Jimmy Torano on the 8-year-old Day Dream.

No one could touch McLain Ward and HH Carlos Z in the Rolex Central Park Horse Show $40,000 Canadian Pacific Railway U.S. Open Speed, and his time of 58.63 seconds easily topped Conor Swail with Cita (60.26 seconds). (Read the Chronicle's coverage of the class.

Kristen Vanderveen flew around the jump-off of the $380,000 Horseware Ireland Grand Prix at the Tryon International Equestrian Center to win her first five-star grand prix.
