The dressage competition of the Rio Olympic Games begins with the Grand Prix, and yesterday the first half of the 30 competitors completed their tests. You can read all about how the first two U.S. team members did and what the leaders thought of their riders in the Chronicle’s coverage of the morning session and at the end of the day. Also, find out why one of the top Dutch riders decided to not complete her test.
The second half of the field goes from 9:00 a.m. – 3 p.m. EST today (Rio time is 1 hour ahead of Eastern time). These Grand Prix scores count for both the team and individual medals.
Then, the Grand Prix Special goes on Aug. 12 (9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. EST). Team medals are awarded after the Special, with the Grand Prix and Special scores each counting 50 percent toward the cumulative score.
The top 18 individual riders after the Grand Prix and Special go forward to the Grand Prix freestyle on Aug. 15, where they’ll ride for individual medals. They start on a clean slate score-wise, so the freestyle score determines the individual medal finish.
Chronicle reporters will post short update stories at the middle and end of each Grand Prix day, then do a round-by-round blog of the action of the Grand Prix Special on Aug. 12 and of the Grand Prix freestyle on Aug. 15. We’ll also be tracking down some great stories about the riders who inspire us! Make sure to check www.coth.com and on the COTH Facebook page to keep up to date.
