One Week To Go

So this time next week, the team riders hope to be settled in Lexington, Ky. I try not to think about that too much.

Every day I just look after the boys to the best of my ability, hoping that I can maintain the bubble wrap for the next few days.

With only two horses to take care of, the past few days have been a little slow. For myself, as I am sure for most grooms, trying not to over fuss with the horses is tough when you are so used to being busy all day. I think if Woodburn gets one more bath he is seriously going to take a chunk of skin out of my arm! Every time I come in with a grooming kit, he stands in the back corner telling me where to go. And then a carrot appears and we are friends again!

People always ask me how sensitive horses are. I feel that is such an open-ended question.

Like people, I believe the environment affects all horses differently. When we first arrived at Chattahoochee, both Woodburn and Milo started to go off their feed and go into competitive mindset. It only took them two quiet days before they started to relax in the less chaotic atmosphere. They started to work more consistently and are now both eating and drinking well…which removes a little stress for me.

Oded was here Thursday and Friday, so he and Phillip spent time looking over the dressage tests done on the weekend and then going over where improvements can be made. The Bouckaert farm staff has been amazing in helping with the footing issues. They are out at 5:30 every morning watering and dragging the rings. The past two days they have aerated and laid down 2 inches of sand on a gallop strip.

Phillip has been keeping himself busy teaching once he’s done riding. On Saturday he flew home to see his family, although I can guarantee he was seen in the show jump warm-up at Plantation throughout Sunday. The man never rests. He is a true inspiration to anyone that wants to make it to the top in this sport; his work ethic is second to none.

Carl had a barbecue for all of us on Friday night. It was held at his lakeside cabin—such a cool place. Today we are going to Julie Richards’ for a swim and some food. I’m sure fun will be had by all!

I have been pretty good about my running program, although I thought it might be getting a little easier for me by now…apparently not!

Time to leave this wonderful McDonalds now and head back to poultice the boys. Angie, our massage guru is in town today and tomorrow, so the boys are getting some good rubs. Maybe there will be time for me to have a massage this time, but who knows. Horses first always!

Until next week,
Emma
