Bromont, Quebec—June 9

When Jordán Linstedt sat down to plan RevitaVet Capato’s 2017 season, the Pedigree Bromont CCI*** wasn’t originally on her schedule. But as often happens with horses, plans changed.

Linstedt and “Capato” were set to contest their third Rolex Kentucky CCI**** this spring, but following their final prep run—an   advanced horse trials at The Fork (N.C.)—something didn’t seem quite right.

“I don’t know if he tweaked something up front, but he just didn’t quite feel like himself the whole last week and a half getting ready for Kentucky,” said Linstedt. “So in the back of my mind I was not really sure what I was going to do, but it was very, very minor.

“Then finally he again just wasn’t as consistent in the flat,” she continued. “He had a nice test at Kentucky, but to me—I know him so well—that he just didn’t feel quite perfect. On Saturday, we did some more diagnostics and couldn’t really find anything, but I made the decision to withdraw him.

“He’s a horse that I would really like to go overseas with, and being that he wasn’t quite that 110 percent I didn’t want to risk it,” she said. “I withdrew him on Saturday, and therefore rerouted to Jersey [Fresh International CIC*** (N.J.)].”

With a solid run there, she decided to do one final run on the east coast before packing her bags to head home to Duvall, Wash.

So far her trip to Bromont has been a successful one. She leads the CCI*** with the 14-year-old Hanoverian she owns with her mother Barbara Linstedt on a 43.2 penalty score.

“He really keeps getting better and better,” Jordán said. “He’s a horse with so much movement and gaits that are really, really good, so I’m just happy that I finally can really ride it. He’s got big movement. It’s hard sometimes for me to keep it all together. I feel like really this year, even the end of last year, he just keeps getting better and better and the more rideable he is. Now I can put it all together, and he feels really, really good in the ring. I think half the time I was smiling because it felt really, really good.”

Sitting just behind her on a 43.8 is Ryan Wood and Powell, an 11-year-old Oldenburg owned by Summit Sport Horses.

“I was thrilled with him,” said Wood. “He warmed up great, and he’s been going really good all week. I sort of have to keep a lid on myself not to overdo it with him and ride him too many times, because he gets here, and he’s the sort of horse that doesn’t need to be ridden twice a day. So I had to have some self control and just ride him once a day. He’s been working great all week. He went in there, and I couldn’t have asked him to be any better.”

Powell is coming off a win at intermediate at Fair Hill (Md.), after withdrawing from the Jersey Fresh International CIC*** following torrential rains.

When he heads out on cross-country tomorrow, Wood has his eye on the prize.

“The course looks pretty beefy,” said Wood. “[Course designer Derek di Grazia’s] done a great job as always, and I’m looking forward to getting Powell out there. I think it’s going to be a great test for the both of us.

“I’m going to take one minute as it comes and then just ride the horse that I have,” he continued. “He feels fit and ready, so we’ll see how it ends up.”

Sara Kozumplik Murphy rounds out the top three in the CCI*** with Rubens D’Ysieux on a 44.8 penalty score.
