James C. “Jimmy” Wofford was officially recognized for his years of service to horse sports with the U.S. Equestrian Federation Lifetime Achievement Award on Jan. 14 at the Federation’s annual Pegasus Awards dinner.

A decorated athlete, Wofford, Upperville, Va., has helped shape the sport of eventing as a trainer, clinician, author and administrator. He earned team silver in eventing at the 1968 and 1972 Olympic Games as well as individual silver at the 1980 alternate Olympics.

In 1970, aboard Kilkenny, the pair won individual bronze at the World Championships in Punchestown, Ireland. In 1978, he was part of the bronze-medal winning team with Carawich at the World Championships in Kentucky. A five-time U.S. National Champion, Wofford won on five different horses. He also won team gold at the 1967 Winnipeg Pan American Games and took two Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event titles in 1981 and 1986.

Wofford served as President of the American Horse Shows Association; first vice-president of the U.S. Equestrian Team and secretary of the U.S. Combined Training Associations (now the U.S. Eventing Association). His résumé boasts several other administrative commitments and committee service.

Now 67, Wofford has retired from competition, but he is still an active coach and clinician as well as a published author.
