Default Horse loosing chunks of hair!!

Pie is loosing huge chunks of hair on his neck! It is very sore.
His skin feels like it has small scabby bumps on both sides of his neck, sides of chest, and one side of his body.

He wears a blanket and comes inside during bad weather + is clipped, so I'm pretty sure it isn't rain rot. It 'erupted' pretty immediately also.

Could this be fire ant bites?? We are in SW GA.

Sounds like you are describing ringworm.

I've had a horse with ringworm before, and this is definitely not.

Sounds like rainrot from the description, though.

I probably sound like a broken record on every skin thread, but just having had a friends' horse diagnosed with Pemphigus Foliaceus, please bare this in mind and if you have a vet checking over the horse, ask the vet to keep it in the back of his/her mind.
I had never heard of this before, and vet thought it was rather rare, but I wonder how rare.

I hope it's indeed nothing more than some rainrot.

My friends' horse was also diagnosed as ringworm first and treated as such, losing several weeks doing useless shampoos when finally vet decided to do a skin biopsy.
My friends' horse showed up like this totally out of the blue from one day to the other .

What is the treatment for that? He has had a weird 'scab' thing on the other side of his neck that has not healed/grown hair back in 4 months.

There have been at least four threads in the last couple months about horses with skin problems, all of which have symptoms of Pemphigus Foliaceus. Your Pie has the classic signs; hair loss, sore, and scabs. I would seek out a good vet promptly.

The mare I ride regularly got rain rot in two patches on either side of her neck about 2"x4" about 1/2 way down her neck up near her mane. We removed the scabs (hair comes off with it) and treated with a tea tree oil skin treatment. She had some tiny patches elsewhere (a couple on her chest and a few just above her hocks). We did the same treatment on all. Followed up with the same tea tree oil skin treatment a few more times over the next week or two. Cleared up right away and hasn't returned. Took about a month for the hair to grow in on the larger patches on her neck.
