Default STB peeps - can you take a crack at a freeze brand?

    Hi all,
I volunteered to help someone try to identify a mare that she recently bought at OLEX here in ON, which frequently means the horse is entering the slaughter pipeline. She may be Canadian-bred, but there is also a good possibility she came from the States. She is in rough shape....high spine, every rib visible, and from the looks of it in foal. She is currently at a clinic in order to hep re-establish her gut flora, as every time anything new is added, she experiences gas colic. She is, however, bright and opinionated and on the road to recovery. The folks who have her are taking stellar care of her - she sure landed on her feet!
So, now that you have some background, here are three photos of her freeze brand. I realize that clipping the neck would make it more readable, but with it still being winter here, that's going to wait a bit

All you have to do is clip the tattoo down, it is unreadable with that much hair. I keep my OTSTBs freeze brands clipped (habit from the track, I also keep their manes long and with the long bridle path) Just shave down that part that and once you have legible numbers I can look it up.

What colour is she? Looks almost roan in those pics. If she was, would be easier to play spin the letters to figure out what that first letter is.

SK, she is a plain bay....no visible white markings from the pics I've seen. Whorl in the middle of her forehead slightly above eye level (do they use whorls in stbs like we do in TBs?)
One person came up with All Over You, who apparently raced IIRC at Rideau; thing is, she is listed as having been registered to someone in Maine in November.
Two things that make that suspect to me is that I think it's taken her a while to get this thin (I mean prominent spine, ribcage fully visible, jutting hips). Also unless she was already up here, very unlikely that she'd have been shipped up. Looks in foal too.
Could you see 1CG05 ? My DSO is wondering if she could be registered as 1CG059 - Ideal Titan, bred in IN, foaled in "05, owned by someone in Lakefield, ON as of 2008.

The first letter looks like it may be an E rather than a C but with all that hair, who knows? We do not use whorls and I cannot recall them being used since we were blood typing in the 70s and now everything is DNA'd before registration.
The horse cannot be Ideal Titan as she is brown aka black with a mealy muzzle, not bay.
You might try cleaning the brand with rubbing alcohol. A wet brand is easier to see particularly with a long coat and the alcohol will dry quickly enough she isnt going to get chilled

Thanks for the extra info, SK.....it's always cool to see variations from one discipline to another!
Her owner's husband found this win pic and feels it looks a lot like her

Thanks also for the tip about the rubbing alcohol! Will pass it on and even if that isn't her name, it's fun to hunt!
    Thanks,

Dee - I find it interesting that the pic you posted clearly shows a bay horse yet Ideal Titan is registered as brown. From the colour in that pic compared to the coat colour in your shots, it may be the same mare. The thing I cannot figure out is WHY they bred her - other than having Western Hanover as the paternal grandsire and Abercrombie as maternal, she isn't anything worth breeding.

SK, I know what you mean....I wonder if they are doing like the JC does and uses them as generic terms. My late gelding was registered as dark bay or brown (dk. b or br in the racing form), but his coat varied seasonally. Ought to look up my other two - one is the same type of bay as Boo, while the other is much more a blood bay.
For the breeding part, I don't think they've checked her to confirm yet....her most recent owner may have not been an stb person, or it could be a catch colt.
She is starting to eat better....if you want to have a look, there is a FB page for her called Destiny, The Mare That Stole Our Hearts. She was probably a BCS of 1 - 1.5 when they pulled her out of Kitchener.
Hope you are staying warm out west!

Dee, i dunno how generic they let the terms get but had enough colour change forms come through the race office to know incorrectly called colours got caught fairly often; at least it happened here with the old tattoo man as he was a stickler for colour but the new one seems to let some slide and he should know better.

She may well have a registerable foal but without full breeding reports, it can't be registered and there are reams of paperwork to do just for you as new owner to deal with.

Can't see facebook pages as it wants me to sign up and I have no intention of doing that. Hate that stuff.

Weather is warming slightly, at least it isn't -30°C with a hideous windchill now but had another blizzard yesterday and I can't get outta my yard again.....*SIGH* I want spring.

Dee, I wondered if she was Destiny. I have been following her story.
She is lucky! Last week, out of 46 horses that went through Olex, 36 went to slaughter, including 7 tbs that my DD's coach and friend were too late to save. They did manage to get 5 that had been left behind because they could not load 12 in the trailer... those 5 are at the barn, in good weight and shape for Tbs outside this winter.
I hate Olex and I am only 5 minutes away from there. I try to avoid going that direction on Tuesdays. It breaks my heart to see the trucks parked out back!
there is a picture of her at Olex, taken from the gallery above... a rack of bones!
