Default Free horse, great companion, or possible light riding - VT

I am looking for a good situation for my 17 year old ISH. He is a retired eventer, who packed me and his previous owner around Training and Prelim level. He was retired from eventing because he has caudal heel syndrome. He is a very good companion for young horses- he is playful and kind. He is currently turned out with two 2-year old horses (and has been out with them on and off since they were weanlings). I have been working towards getting him sound, he spent the last year barefoot, growing out his hooves under the care of a barefoot trimmer. I have recently put shoes on him up front and and so far he is looking like he might be able to return to some light work (trail riding and possibly lower level dressage). If he stays sound, he'd love a job (he is a people pony) but I don't have time to put him into work myself.

The ideal situation would be a long-term home as a companion horse, or a short/long-term home with an experienced horseless rider.

How are his ground manners? I'm looking for something safe for DH to play around with on the ground. My mare also could do with a companion.

His ground manners are great- no vices and easy to work with.

Update: I started him back under saddle this week. He is doing well and feels comfortable and sound.

How is your horse doing is he still comfortable and sound? Are you still looking for a home for him? Do you have any photos?
