I need some cheese for my whine! Update - Taking one on trial!
So while I was visiting my dad on Thanksgiving, I found a local ad for a 17 inch Tad Coffin for around $1,000 and made an appointment to see it. I brought a tape measurer with me to measure the width of the tree to make sure it would fit my very wide paint gelding.
So I get there, and they pull out a very nicely kept Tad Coffin. Soft, supple leather and it measured 5" from point to point - perfect for my guy! Well, I start looking and realize that it looks awful small, so I measure the seat... 15 freaking inches There's a huge difference between a 17" and a 15" saddle! That goes from an adult saddle to a child saddle. Alas, it was too good to be true and I still don't have a saddle (that I like) for my short, fat paint
When selling a saddle, please measure it before you put it online!

FWIW, I think Tad Coffin's seat sizes run small. I went from a 17" Beval Devon to a 19" Tad Coffin. So if the person truly ordered a 17" TC, chances are it measured 15"

They run about a half size small. I usually ride in a 16.5", but my TC is a 17" and fits perfectly! I also purchased mine lightly used for a price similar to what the OP found. It is possible to find great deals out there; just keep looking! Good luck on the saddle search!

Resurrecting this to say that after lots of research on higher end saddles, I am going with Tad Coffin. I called yesterday, and he was all about my height, build, horses, etc. Lots of questions, and seemed very interested in helping me get a good fit. I am getting a demo to try.
More than I can say for a certain other saddle maker that I contacted.
Love the new TC tree, the look of the saddle, and the new deeper seat model.
Will report when I get my demo.

I love Tad Coffin. His workshop is just a few miles away. We went on a field trip there with 4-H one time, years ago. It was gorgeoussss!! And he is very, very nice.

I actually have the new Tc2 Model with the deeper seat and the new tree. It is a wicked nice saddle, I can feel how much more of a secure position it puts me in, and the seat is wicked comfortable. Before this one I was actually riding in a 16 3/4 (not sure how I found a seat that size) but now in my Tad i am a 17.5 because they run small it fits about the same as the 16 3/4 maybe a little bigger. Just a half size smaller than the actual seat is. They are extremly pricey but they are worth every pretty penny you will spend on them. All of Tad's products are beautiful though for fittings I highly suggest his leather pads, they work great.

Thank you skittle, very helpful. I can't wait to get the demo. Think I will get the deeper seat. Very excited. Like I said, I could not believe the attention and service I got when I called.

If you are going for a new TC2, you will ADORE IT!!!! So will your horse, with the moving tree. No other saddle can compare to it in comfort for the horse.
After 11 years in an A5, I am in heaven in my TC2

None in my size used
I guess I stole this thread but maybe the OP will come back on... the used ones are fabulous, but none mine size in the TC2.

Yes Tad is just about the best guy out there for the job. He made it his lifes mission to make each horse that wears his saddle as comfotable as possible. Even if his newer brands are successfull he strives to make it better. I respect him a ton. Not only does he care about the horse fit but he will do just about whatever it takes for a great fit for the rider first. I like to think of this situation sort of like the "once you go mac you never go back", in this case though "once you go tad you never go back"! He has the best customer service on planet earth. If your saddle get damaged in any way if you send it to him he will fix it. My trainer got his saddle fixed and Tad actually replaced the old tree with the new smart ride one for FREE!
