A Jockeys' Guild study, presented at the Jockeys’ Guild Assembly on Jan. 19 in Hollywood, Fla., supports the idea that all helmets involved in an impact should be replaced.

The study was conducted at Chesapeake Testing in Belcamp, Md., and it provided customized testing to mimic a fall on dirt or being stepped on by a horse.

ExtraExtraordinary, a 6-year-old gelding owned by Susan and Charles Strittmatter of Clorevia Farm in Virginia and trained by Doug Fout, was humanely euthanized on the track following a catastrophic injury in the third race of the Far Hills Race Meet in Far Hills, N.J.

Jonathan Sheppard scores his 14th New York Turf Writers win with a homebred.

My big, fat Italian Wedding? Well, not anymore.

Italian Wedding, as Jonathan Sheppard explained, “was quite small when he was a young horse and a little on the chubby side. He was kind of...cute, but he didn’t look really look like any major race horse. He looked like a fat little pony.”

For years, two of the biggest fall steeplechase meets have bumped heads on the third Saturday in October. With the Far Hills Race Meeting (N.J.) and the International Gold Cup (Va.) refusing to give up the weekend, officials of both have tried to make the best of it, but it’s long been a sore spot among owners, trainers and race goers.

With Monmouth Park (N.J.) and Shawan Downs (Md.) sharing on the same race date of Sept. 26, the National Steeplechase Association has decided to give the open claiming timber race a try again to lure more timber horses to Maryland.

Claiming races are nothing new for steeplechase meets. Many trainers use these races to prep for others, taking the risk of losing their owner’s precious mounts in a claim or perhaps hoping to unload some excess horses, but these races are usually run as hurdle races.

The American Gold Cup, scheduled to run Sept. 9-13 at the Cleveland Metroparks Polo Field in Moreland Hills, Ohio, has been canceled. The North Coast Jumper Classic, slated to run Sept. 2-6, at the same location, was also canceled. Stadium Jumping, Inc., organized both events.

According to the local paper, The Plain Dealer, the loss of a title sponsor was the reason for the cancellation.

Richard Valentine trains the winner for Whitewood Stable.

Whitewood Stable’s Blue Rider (Robert Walsh) bided his time behind leader Kenneth Ramsey’s Mabou (Padge Whelan) in the $25,000 Sport of Kings maiden special weight at the High Hope Steeplechase, May 17 in Lexington, Ky.

When Mabou fell at the 11th fence, Blue Rider inherited the lead and romped home to a seven-length victory. Mabou and Whelan were not injured.
