Gulf Coast

It was a quiet affair, just a few people and a horse headed up to the ring to show during the Gulf Coast Sunshine Classic V (Miss.). It was just a 1.00-meter training jumper class. There weren't any headlines being made or big checks handed out.

But for Camille Maynard, it was a big step and an emotional return.

For most riders, winning a grand prix would be the main focus of their day. But for Andy Kocher, his time in the show ring is a short respite between selling horses. Lucky for him, he’s gotten quite good at both.

Classic Company President Bob Bell has announced today, Feb. 23, that in response to the EHV1 outbreak in Ocala, Classic Company will be implementing additional biosecurity measures at the Gulf Coast Circuit in Gulfport, Miss., effective immediately.

There will be a security guard at the front gate 24 hours a day, every day, checking all horses arriving onto the Harrison County Fairgrounds and Equestrian Center property.

When Frances Land exited the ring after her victory gallop, her father, Jay Land, was right there to help with her horse and congratulate his daughter on her win.

“Not bad,” he said. “Three out of four!”

The weather was constantly changing during the morning of the $10,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby at the Gulf Coast Magnolia Classic IV—clouds rolled by, winds were gusty, but between patches of sunshine and a few drops of rain, Holly Shepherd and Triompf remained strong. Their steadfast performances earned them the blue in the classic round as well as the overall title. Bob Brawley and Diane DeMatteo's Amadeo took second in the handy round, and third overall. Christian Rogge and Promise Me won overall reserve honors.

March 6, 2011 is likely to hold a special meaning for Frances Land from now on as the date she won her first Grand Prix. Land, 16, and her Merlin topped the $25,000 Equifit Grand Prix at Gulf Coast Magnolia Classic IV today after jumping two clear rounds.

“It’s all a little surreal right now!” she said.

But it was a victory that almost wasn’t. In the jump-off, Merlin clipped the top of a vertical—the second-to-last fence—and the rail bounced up out of its cups before settling back down.

Olivia Weaver’s Yes Indeed and Sarah Mechlin had plenty of adversity to overcome on their way to first place in the $10,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby at Gulf Coast Magnolia Classic IV today. First there was the rain, which fell steadily throughout the morning class. There was also the wind, gusting up to 30 miles per hour. Then there were the courses themselves. But Yes Indeed, or “Ray,” and Mechlin handled all the challenges thrown at them with aplomb, winning the 49-horse class over last year’s champions Primera and Catherine Rinehart.
