The U.S. Equestrian Federation has named the following drivers to represent the United States at the two driving World Championships set to take place over the next two months. Chester Weber will serve as the chef d'equipe for both championships.
The FEI World Pair Driving Championships will take place in Conty, France, Aug. 24-28, and the three drivers who will represent the U.S. with pairs of horses will be:
Spectators and competitors at the CAI-B Live Oak in Ocala, Fla., March 24-27, honored the 2008 Farnam/Platform U.S. Equestrian Federation Horse of the Year, Jamaica, as owner Chester Weber officially retired the Dutch Warmblood gelding. Jamaica will enjoy his golden years at Weber’s Live Oak Stud in Ocala, Fla.
• Allison Stroud, West Grove, Pa., and her team of gray geldings won the USEF Four-In-Hand Pony National Champion-ship with a final penalty mark of 145.14. Benjamin, 16, Kilkerin Edward, 12, Cong Donal, 11, and Sir Patrick, 10, are Connemaras from England and Ireland. Mystic, 9, a New Forest Pony, is the only member of the team from the Netherlands.
“The others all like to go down to the pub and have a pint,” Stroud said with a laugh.
This driving veteran gave his final salute with a blue ribbon in hand.
Larry Poulin’s long and illustrious career in combined driving had a fairy tale ending at the Lexington Combined Driving Classic, Oct. 1-5, as he took home the USEF National Pair Horse Championship with Wylie, Rivage and Conyer.
He steals the show from several repeat champions and takes his second victory at the World Equestrian Festival in Germany.
British-based Australian Boyd Exell is no stranger to the Aachen CHIO, having won the individual four-in-hand driving competition there in 2003. But even with that experience at the famed German venue, his chances of capturing victory again this year on July 1-5 seemed slim compared to those of 11-time winner Ijsbrand Chardon of the Netherlands.
Q: Do you have a completely different team for the indoor competitions?
A: No, I have three really good marathon leaders: Eminence, Pascal and Bill, which I also take to the indoor competitions.
Q: When did you buy your two 6-year-olds, Monty and Winston, and where did the rest of your team come from?
There aren’t a lot of surprises when U.S. veteran driver Larry Poulin enters a competition, and that’s just the way he likes it.
Poulin, who’s been to the World Pairs Driving Championships seven times already, had one last chance to impress the U.S. selectors for this year’s championships. And he undoubtedly succeeded in that goal at the Bromont CAI-A in Bromont, Que., June 26-28.
