Wiese Holds On To Brentina Cup And Porter Pushes Ahead In Junior Championship

A high score from the first leg of the Brentina Cup Championship worked in Jocelyn Wiese’s favor today, June 20. It was just enough to give her the championship with Lamborghini, even though her ride in the young rider Grand Prix only placed fourth (64.32%).

The two scores are averaged, and Wiese’s 66.41 percent from the Brentina Cup test put her ahead of Alyssa Eidbo and Johnny Cash. Consistency worked in Eidbo’s favor, as she placed fourth on Day 1 (64.97%) and third today (64.41%).

Lauren Sprieser actually won the young rider Grand Prix test aboard Clairvoya (64.83%), but her sixth-placed finish in the Brentina Cup test (60.76%) relegated her to fifth overall. Jennifer Sirrine took second place with Woody Allen (64.55%).

“This test is more difficult for me than the Brentina Cup test, but we had improvements in the one-tempis,” said Wiese. “Overall, it was a really good effort from my horse and myself. It was very close, it was within a couple tenths of a point, but I was lucky enough to have a lead coming in from the Brentina Cup test to give me a little leeway. There were a couple little mistakes that I wish I hadn’t had, but it wasn’t the end of the world.”

Wiese, 21, worked at Hilltop Farm for the past two years, but now she’s decided to go back to college fulltime at the University of Maryland to finish her degree. She intends to keep “Zoomy” and continue riding and teaching.

“This is my first year at this level, and it’s showing me that I’m going in the right direction towards the Grand Prix,” said Wiese.

Eidbo, 19, will head off to Auburn University in the fall, and her good result in the Brentina Cup left her feeling a bit conflicted about riding during college.

“I wasn’t expecting to be second since I was fourth and third, so that was a wonderful surprise,” she said. “We had such consistent rides. I hope to move on and do the Grand Prix, but I’m going to college in the fall. I wanted to see what I could do to see how much I should do in college.”

In the junior championship, the top two flip-flopped from the first day, and 17-year-old Riana Porter won the junior individual test (70.36%) and finished up as the champion with Romax Foldager over Lauren Knopp and Rho Dance.

Porter actually thought she benefited from riding during a downpour. “It drowned everything out, and I had to focus on the test more and be more aware of where he was going,” she said.

Porter’s owned “Romax” for almost five years and rehabbed him from a suspensory injury before she bought him.

“I know every little detail that pertains to him—we have a really strong connection,” she said. “I purchased him when he was going second level. We’re moving up the levels together.”

Knopp, 18, admitted she was a bit conservative in her extensions during her ride, but she didn’t think Rho Dance minded the weather at all.

Genay Vaughn and Waranja took third place in the junior individual test (67.42%) and also placed third overall.
