Rear Admiral Of The Race

“All right, Admiral, I’ll race you to the first turn, just to see what it’s like, if you insist, but then I’ll have to get back aboard!” read the original caption for this photo, taken by New York Racing Association photographer Bob Coglianese, when it first ran in the Oct. 16, 1970, issue of The Chronicle of the Horse. “Jockey Ernie Cardone, half-hidden behind Admiral Raddy (No. 10) is running with his horse after [the] latter stumbled and flipped him out of the saddle at [the] start of [the] ninth race at Aqueduct on May 4.

Ernie held on to [his] reins and brought the Rear Admiral to a halt after going a slow hundred feet.”
