As Skylar Wireman watched the puissance class on Friday night during the 2022 Washington International Horse Show (Maryland) and later walked up to the towering 6’10” wall, the thought that crossed her mind likely wasn’t shared by the majority of spectators that night: “Maybe I’ll get to do this next year.” While the fall indoor show is […]
David Loman, former chair of the U.S. Hunter Jumper Association Diversity and Inclusion Advocacy Committee, was added to the U.S. Center for SafeSport list of those banned from participation in all activities and competitions licensed, endorsed or sponsored by the U.S. Equestrian Federation. Loman’s Feb. 1 permanent ineligibility for alleged sexual misconduct remains subject to […]
What happens when you wrap proven bloodlines, deep eventing connections and a spicy personality into one fun-sized package? According to Briggs Surratt, 26, you get Corture, a 14.2-hand Holsteiner cross he suspects is the only pony currently competing at the three-star level in the United States. Surratt spells the mare’s stable name as “Haute,” as […]

Whether it’s face-to-face or in a text, at least twice a week Josefine “Josie” Eliasson gets asked the same questions: “I’m looking for a groom, rider, manager, etc., do you know someone?” or “I’m looking for a new job, do you know of a good employer?” Eliasson, a professional groom who has spent the past seven […]
“Do I remember? You kidding? You don’t forget stuff like that,” Jim Wofford told me when I contacted him about a remarkable photo I found in a Chronicle issue from 50 years ago.
The story about the 1967 Myopia Horse Trials in Hamilton and Ipswich, Mass., in the June 23, 1967 issue looked like any other, with a short report, results, and a page of photos. It was late December 2019, and Lily Weaver was equal parts excited and nervous to ride her new pony “Bun” properly for the first time. Weaver had only sat on Bun once before, bareback, less than 24 hours after the 14.2-hand palomino had been purchased at the Lebanon Valley Livestock Auction (Pennsylvania) by a rescue […]
Eventing legend Jim Wofford died on Feb. 2 at the age of 78. In his memory, we’re republishing this article, which ran as a “Living Legend” feature in the April 2022 issue, the Kentucky Preview, of The Chronicle of the Horse. James C. Wofford hacked along the winding gravel road with one hand on the […]
