This photo originally ran in the Aug. 7, 1970, issue of The Chronicle of the Horse. It was second in a series of five images documenting the domino effect set in motion by jockey Tommy Skiffington’s fall from his horse Markomanne during the Fair Hill Spring Meet (Md.).
Skiffington, who went on to a successful career of race-riding in Europe and eventually became a trainer, showed graceful form as he hurtled toward the turf that day, and his mount galloped away unhurt. A second horse, however, tripped over him and went down, and then another. The pile-up allowed a horse from the back of the pack, not even pictured in this photo, to come from behind and win.
