On Aug. 14, the family of Lauren Kanarek released a statement regarding the Aug. 7 shooting at Michael Barisone’s Hawthorne Hill dressage training facility in Long Valley, New Jersey:

Lauren is still in the hospital recovering from the gunshot wounds inflicted by Michael Barisone. She sustained damage to her chest and lungs, and doctors have performed several medical procedures to enable her to breathe.

Her condition remains serious. Right now, the family is focused solely on her recovery. Lauren’s fiance, Rob Goodwin, had surgery on Aug. 13 to repair his broken hand, sustained when he disarmed Barisone in a brawl that ensued after the shooting.

Barisone’s bail hearing is scheduled for Aug. 14, and given the inexplicable attack on Lauren, the family expects that he remain in custody pending his trial.

At this time, the family thanks those who have supported them and Lauren through this most traumatic time. While there may have been a civil disagreement between Lauren and Mr. Barisone, such things never justify the use of a gun.
