Cherokeeinthehills Takes The Feature At Callaway

There was an abrupt change of plans this weekend and editorial staff member, Nicole Lever, was unable to travel to Pine Mountain, Ga., to cover the Callaway Steeplechase in person. So here is a brief recap of the races and please look for the full story and photos in the Nov. 19 print edition.

Marilyn S. Ketts’ Cherokeeinthehills (Gus Brown) won the $100,000 AFLAC U.S. Championship novice hurdle stakes, the feature race of the day. The 7-year-old son of Cherokee Colony took command of the race on the backside of the Georgian course and defeated Trained by Jonathan Sheppard, the winner defeated Raise A Storm (Rob Massey) and Hay Getoutofmyway (Brian Korrell) to win for the second time this year.

Kinross Farm continued their red-hot streak with a win and a second in the maiden timber. Miles Ahead (Chris Read), who was claimed from the hurdle division this summer, made his debut a winning one for trainer Neil Morris with He’s A Dreamer (Brown) on his heels.

The husband/wife team of Ted and Dabney Thompson captured their second amateur/rider hurdle with their own Gallant Turk
