Portuguese rider Francisco Seabra suffered a fatal accident while on course at the Rancho Alegre CIC** in Seville, Spain, on Feb. 14. The rider and his mount Aferzysta fell at the final element of fence 10, a water combination. According to reports, the 9-year-old gelding wasn’t injured in the fall.
Seabra, 30, represented Portugal at the 2014 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games (France), where he finished 44th individually with Zarthago. A release from the FEI stated the organization is conducting a full investigation on the accident.

The event opted for a moment of silence instead of the usual prizegiving ceremony.
“On behalf of all the sports world, I would like to extend my heartfelt considerations to the family of Mr. Francisco Seabra,” said Alain James, president of the ground jury at the Seville CIC, in a statement from the event.
