The Florida Department of Agriculture reported on March 1 that one of the four horses located at Miles Away farm in Loxahatchee, Fla., that tested positive for EHV-1 has developed neurological symptoms. Other than the index horse from the HITS Ocala showgrounds on Feb. 21, this is the first positive EHV-1 case to display the neurological symptoms, or Equine Herpes Myeloencephalopathy. The horse is being treated at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine in Gainesville.
The four EHV-1-positive horses at Miles Away Farm had spent time at the HITS Ocala showgrounds in Tent 3, while the index case in Ocala was housed in Tent 7. Another positive test case, housed at Redfield Farm in Ocala, had been housed in Tent 6 on the HITS Ocala showgrounds. A horse located at Tequestrian Farm in Wellington, Fla., that tested EHV-1 positive had no connection to the HITS Ocala showgrounds.
In addition, another farm was added to the quarantine list, Calder Farm in Ocala due to a positive test result, though the horse shows no clinical signs of EHV-1.
