As a result of a massive rainstorm that flooded many parts of the Chicago area, on April 18 the hunter/jumper breeding farm Aliboo Farm in Minooka, Ill., had to evacuate all 21 horses off the property due to flooding.
The FTI Winter Equestrian Festival wrapped up in Wellington, Fla., with a big finale, the $500,000 FTI Consulting Grand Prix. Husband-and-wife duo Alvaro de Miranda and Athina Onassis de Miranda took center stage in the class, claiming first and third to conclude their first visit to the Florida circuit. Adrienne Pagalilauan doesn’t remember much about the first test she rode in her return to dressage showing. “It just went by so fast in my head! I came out and thought, ‘Oh my gosh, that was the worst ride ever!’ ”
The only horse show winter circuit still taking place is the FTI Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, Fla., but the grand prix action is still hot and heavy there. Irishman Shane Sweetnam had set out to just get Solerina some experience in the $101,000 Pennfield Feed Grand Prix, since it was the horse’s first outing at the 1.60-meter level, but the chestnut mare surprised him with the win. “I had forgotten about it, but I was going through photos on my page and found it. I always loved looking at it, so I put it up there. I never thought so many people would see the photo and comment on it and pass it on!” Conyers said.
Lots of money got handed out in the form of prize-money checks on March 17 thanks to the AIG Thermal $1 Million Grand Prix and the $100,000 Sullivan GMC Truck Grand Prix, but the lion’s share went into German pockets. Victory in the finale events of HITS Desert Circuit (Calif.) and the HITS Ocala Winter Winter series went to German riders Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum and Andre Thieme.
March 12 - An update released by the Florida Department of Agriculture on March 11 revealed that as a result of extensive testing with no new positive results for Equine Herpes Virus-1, state officials are preparing to release the quarantine on the HITS Post Time Farm showgrounds in Ocala.
