Ocala, Fla.—Feb. 14

Glancing down the start order for the $34,000 Jumper Classic 1.45-meter speed class at HITS Ocala today, Hayley Waters’ name didn’t really stand out. There were a lot of big international guns in town this weekend for yesterday’s Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup, and Waters is just 18.

The Irish team for the Furuisyya FEI Nations Cup came to Ocala looking for a quiet, educational day for their four horses—all of whom were competing in a Nations Cup for the first time.

What they left with was the win in a class that saw lots of twists and turns as it played out, with a few shock results for the home team. The U.S. team of veterans held on for second place, buoyed by double-clean performances from both Beezie Madden and Georgina Bloomberg.

Thermal, Calif.—Feb. 7

She grew up riding on the HITS Desert Circuit as a California girl, but Lucy Davis hasn’t shown in Thermal, Calif., since 2011.

Instead, Davis based herself in Europe with trainers Meredith and Markus Beerbaum and showed in Florida on the Winter Equestrian Festival series. Last year was a break-out year for her, as she and Barron represented the United States in the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games, helping the team take bronze.

The United States Equestrian Federation is pleased to announce the riders who will represent the United States on the Hermès U.S. Show Jumping Team in Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup competition at the CSIO**** Ocala, in Ocala, Fla., February 11-15.

Just after the thud of the rail echoed through the stadium, an excited “Whoop!” of joy followed.

“Oops, was I too loud?” Andre Thieme said sheepishly in the press conference of his in-gate celebration. He can be forgiven—that rail thudding meant he just won $350,000. “It’s a big difference between first and second, so I was maybe a little too loud, but I was very excited,” Thieme admitted.
