Galway Downs

Buck Davidson brought three horses to the Galway Downs CCI***, and while they’re relatively inexperienced at the level, he didn’t come across the country for the fun of it.

“He’s the Galway king,” said Michael Pollard about James Alliston as the latter sat down for the press conference after the conclusion of the three-star at Galway Downs. And it would be a fitting title for Alliston, who won the CCI*** here last fall, the CIC*** here this spring, and then, today, finished first and second in the CCI***.  Tivoli took the top spot on 53.4 penalties after pulling one rail in show jumping, and Jumbo’s Jake wasn’t far behind with 56.6 penalties. Pollard and Schoensgreen Hanni rounded out the top three.

There’s no doubt that James Alliston has an excellent Galway Downs streak going. Alliston won the three-star here last fall with Jumbo’s Jake, and he also won the CIC*** this spring with “Jake.” Then today, Alliston jumped himself in the first- and second-placed positions after cross-country in the CCI***, with Tivoli and Jake, respectively.

But while Alliston might be the most successful man at Galway this weekend, he was definitely the busiest this afternoon; he was sitting on three out of 12 three-star starters.

A few weeks ago, Michael Pollard scrapped all plans he had for Schoensgreen Hanni’s fall season. While the mare was originally entered in the Fair Hill CCI*** (Md.), veterinarians found a problem with her heartbeat during the routine in-barn inspections at that event.

Jeanine Allred hadn’t gone advanced in 11 years before this weekend and her horse, Snap Decision II, hadn’t ever set his hooves on a blue-numbered track. But that didn’t stop Allred and “Fuzzy” from putting in a nearly foot-perfect weekend, adding just 8.0 cross-country time penalties to their dressage score of 41.3 to win the division over James Alliston and Parker II. They survived an iffy moment at one oxer to leave all the rails in the cups in show jumping today.
