Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

  • I've been adopted by a cat. And now I need COTH help... UPDATE - 4 KITTENS

First, please be kind to me because I really do not know what I am doing.

Just as the title says, I have been adopted by a "stray" cat. And I say stray in quotes because she has a collar on, but she's basically been living in my yard for the past two weeks. I've looked on Craigslist to see if there were any "lost" ads and didn't find any. She very obviously has recently had kittens because her nipples are swollen. I do at least know that much. She appears to be reasonably healthy but terribly thin. Her eyes are clear, but she shakes her head a lot so I think she may have ear mites. She's not feral but won't let me pick her up. Can't say I blame her if she just had kittens, though.

First question is -- what should I be feeding her? I got just basic dry food for the time being, but I want her to at least be healthy and nourished enough to feed her kitties.

Second question -- What should I look for to know when she has finished nursing? I'd like to have her fixed, but I don't want to take her from her kittens while she is nursing.

Third question -- what basic shots do cats need besides rabies?

I just don't know that much about cats and all I've ever been exposed to are country yard cats and barn cats. I've never been the care-giver.

She's a really sweet girl and I want to do right by her. I also DO NOT want to add to the cat population, so at the least I want to get her fixed!!

    Thanks in advance.

Try some canned cat food. I would think you could use kitten cat food for the higher calories and nutrition since she is nursing. Make sure you provide clean water. Cats need the water and moisture that canned food provides.
You can buy ear mite drops at pet stores, and they are easy to do. If cat will let you pat her, you can kneel on ground with her standing or sitting between your legas, facing out, and do the drops quickly.

My vet said you can spay while nursing, but I would want to wait until babies are 4 weeks or so. I wouldn't want them to be without mom very long in hot weather.
After you feed mom, watch where she goes. Then follow from a distance and you may see where she has kittens.

When a pregnant cat was dumped at the barn, I was able to hold a plate of canned food, and ask her " where are your babies?" And she would lead me to them, and I could feed all if them canned food when they got about 4 weeks old. It's good that she'd take me to them, because she would move them every couple of days. She eventually brought them with her to the barn where I fed all of the cats, so yours may eventually bring her kittens with her to you.
But cats can get pregnant soon after having kittens, so as soon as her kittens can eat wet food, you'll want to get her fixed.

The first thing you will want your vet to check for is feline aids and leukemia. If those are negative, then you move on to the shots/health portion of the exam. The vet will have to assume she's had nothing, and will do a set of shots at that time (if overall health is good), and then a booster some time later. You know, you could provide her a nice place to stay at night, and there's a good chance she'll bring you her kittens.

As for food, I'm not a good source but in the past I've read that a "growth" formula is good...and some people will actually feed the momma a good kitten food. There are other VERY good cat people here, though, and hopefully you will get some good recommendations!

        Bumping this back up.

The kittens have shown up and they appear to be 7-8 weeks old. There are 4 of them and they are just adorable little balls of orange fluffy fur. But that is where the cuteness stops. They are indeed feral, but seem to be warming up a little bit. Mama Cat shared her dinner with three of them a couple of nights ago.

Is it safe to assume I can take Mama Cat now and have her fixed since the kittens are eating solid food?

Definitely...might even be able to have the kits fixed as well, depending on when/what weight your vet will do them at.

I definitely want to get the kits fixed because I am sure no one else is going to! From watching Mama Cat's comings and goings since my original post, I think she belongs to the family across the street. It also appears that there are at least two other adult cats. I know it's probably a dicey thing to take someone else's cat to get it fixed, but.... if these kittens don't get fixed, they will multiply like crazy. Judging from their feral manners, it's apparent they have had no human contact since being born, so really... I hope I'm doing a good favor.

Thanks, Marla. That's a nice thing to say. I am soooo not a cat person, and DH is even less than a cat person than I. But... who fed Mama Cat sardines the other night when we didn't have wet food? DH. Who was trying to be slick and look at cat toys at Target a couple weeks ago? DH. And the cat loooooooves him back. He drives a big diesel truck, and she comes RUNNING when she hears him drive up. It's actually pretty sweet to watch the two of them.

You know, sometimes that's how a dog person becomes a dog-and-cat person. The cat chooses you. That's how I got my first cat...and my second.

                  And now...pictures, please?

They all showed up for supper last night. Three of the kittens were hiding under the grill cover, and one was begging with Mama Cat at the back door. I brought their food out and sat down with a glass of wine to watch what they did. Sure enough, eventually all four kittens came out. The runt is very shy and took a bit longer to come out from under the cover. I figure if I sit with them while they are eating, they will maybe begin to trust me.

Yes to wet kitten food. This is a little bit time-consuming, but start putting the plate closer and closer to you when you feed until they are right beside your chair. Then start petting them while they eat. They may skitter and run at first, but be gentle and persistent. They will really want that food. Rinse and repeat! They will tame down. (I just did this very thing with a totally feral four-month-old kitten.)

Your vet may have ideas about where to place the feral kittens. Sometimes people are on the lookout for barn cats that don't have to be tame, indoor creatures.

As for your non-cat DH, I used to have one of those too. Used to have. He always says now that he loves *our* cats but hates all other cats. Uh-huh. Okay.

                              bluemooncowgirl,

being a cat person myself I just want to say I love this thread and I think you and your DH definitely are cat people too. I am enjoying reading about your new kitties and I think you both are doing a wonderful thing for these little ones.

IMO that mouse was not only payment for food but also a signed contract stating that the kitties now consider you and your DH their family and partners and they've got your backs as you've got theirs.

Congratulations and best wishes to you all!

RPM is right: The dead mouse is a cat's way of bringing you flowers when he comes to pick you up for a date. Mama cat is reaching out to you if she's leaving dead mice on your deck.

Yanno, OP, I hate to ask for more from you, but I think you have a shot at taming these babies. And it would help them get along in the world to be non-feral. There is a developmental window for "learning to find use for people" in a cat. These kittens are still within it. And mamma cat is helping them figure out that you guys are a great source of food.

So if you can stand it, do hang out with them while they are eating. I'm not expert at trapping cats and bringing them inside to tame. But if you are game, I think it just might work.

Also, what color are those cats? They look like a sooty buckskin kind of thing. Interesting!

Either your camera is funky or those are the coolest colored cat and kittens ever! BROWN? Or as mvp says, buckskin... And I'd say they get it from mom because she is not that ordinary herself. In the back recesses of my mind I am thinking there is a breed with an odd brown color? Havanese? Must go look this up.

I would be trying to get them to take food from my hand and/or move closer to the dish with every meal. There is a great big chasm between "you're ok to have around" and "you may touch me" and it takes kind of a big step to cross it. In the past I have trapped a mamma and kittens at the stage your family is at now, but you have to have a plan if you are going to do that. Trap/neuter/release might be fine for mamma. The place doing the neutering may require that you surrender the kittens -- are you prepared for that? I never was. I would keep the family caged in a large crate till I could handle at least the little ones, then I'd get them neutered and get them all back. They'd become barn cats or *I* would find them homes -- not faulting the shelters but they have so many and I could put more concentrated effort in.

Y'all are too sweet. Thank you so much for the kind, encouraging words and the great advice.

The cats are regular run-of-the-mill orange tabbies. Their unique color in the photo was a combination of crappy light, my iphone, and having to really zoom in to get them in the photo. I was sitting maybe 5 feet from them.

This is a better representation of their color. This photo was last week, and I took it from inside the house because there was no way the kittens would let me get that close.

Mama Cat came with that collar on. I've thought of taking it off of her because I am worried she's going to get it caught on something.

Those of you who have said the cat found you and not the other way around.... Mama Cat showed up the day after I got home from moving my oldest daughter to college. I had threatened all summer that I was going to get a female dog after taking her to college so there would be another girl in the house to balance out hubz and my son. So, I think the cat showing up was the universe's way of saying "GIRL POWER". At any rate, I am starting to seriously grow attached to these critters.

Again, thanks to everyone for the support. I will definitely keep y'all posted on the new family!

Obviously they are growing on me, and I am *DONE* if I grow on them and they bond with me. Especially the fluffy butt that was begging with Mama Cat last night. Sooo incredibly cute.... I guess I'll just take it one day at a time and see what the universe offers me next.

Omigosh, instead of exotic brown cats you have the best color cat in the world. Now my experience is only with orange tabby MALES, in fact I think most orange tabbies are males. There is one asleep with his head on my arm as we speak. These pics aren't from today but it pretty much describes how my workday plays out at home. You are at an advantage because I strongly believe there is an orange cat cuddle gene.

I'm so glad to hear your enthusiasm, and your growing affection for this little family. I hope you don't live close to me. I looked at your pics and felt a hole develop in my family unit, just about the shape and size of one of those kittens!
