  • 4 y.o. kitty died suddenly this afternoon

he was sleeping and purring in my bed this morning.

I came home from work this aft and thought he was curled up, sleeping on the sofa
when I sat besides him and touched him .... OMG
he was perfectly healthy this morning
    I don't know what happened
my only comfort is that he died safe and warm and looking peaceful

he was one of a litter that was born outside to a feral/homeless kitty that I was feeding.
over the course of a year or two I caught and TNRd them all
some decided that life inside was good

he was the sweetest, nicest cat with big bright green glowing eyes. he made friends with every other cat and they all loved him

    I can't stop crying

he was indoor/outdoor cat until 6 mo ago when he came in injured. he got better over a couple weeks. and I did not let him outside again
at the time, vet thought it might be saddle thrombosis and that even though he was healing, it may still be fatal.

It may well be blood clot from that, that went to his heart today, 6 mo later, killing him in seconds.

I hope that death was quick and painless, and that I gave him the best life possible - he regularly woke me up at 5 a.m. walking all over me in bed, purring loudly before curling up besides me to sleep

also hope that I wake up and find this to be a terrible dream, but I know it is not

I am so sorry for your loss. FWIW, I can tell you that often the first sign of heart disease in a cat is sudden death. And it commonly claims them at a young age.

So very sorry for your loss. There are no words, just hugs! I lost a 4 year old dog last week, totally unexpectedly so I understand.

I'm so sorry. What a shock to lose one so suddenly and so young.

I lost a TNR kitty to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. She was fine, and then she was dead. I was in the barn when it happened and it was very quick. HCM is a frequent diagnosis when young cats die suddenly, and there's very little warning or treatment.

previous saddle thrombus and then sudden death says cardiomyopathy

I am sorry for your sudden loss and yes, it can be lightning fast with rarely a warning.

Like you say curled up content in a loving home.

My Ragdoll died unexpectedly in his sleep at age 5 and the vet said it was likely HCM. As others have said, there are rarely any signs beforehand.

                          So sorry for your loss.

Similar thing happened to a friend of my sister. She came home from work and her young cat was dead in the hallway, frozen in mid-step. Vet said prob HCM and the cat was gone instantly.

                                  thank you all
it has been a tough couple days
                                  i buried him yesterday

homeless/feral kitties seem to find their way to my doorstep
This morning i have seen two - very unusual as I rarely put food outside anymore bc I attract raccoons and opossums to my front porch.

it is as if the kitties sense there may be a vacancy in the house and if they hang around, they may be the next ones I trap and adopt.

I now have "only" 6 inside my little bungalow

so very sorry for you. You gave him the best life possible for as long as possible.

I used to swear there was a " wild animals welcome" sign at my place. but I never could find it.

So sorry, lots of hugs. Same thing happened to my sister's four year old cat (I own his brother), a few weeks back. She said he was fine in the AM, but her hubby came home and he was gone.

Jingles. Vets said it was likely HCM for Winston. She did not opt for a necropsy, but took her other cat to the vet to make sure it wasn't anything like poison.

                                      Major (((hugs)))
