Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

  • Whew. Just spent two days reading this thread, but I finished it ... cover to cover!

I have no bone in this fight but wanted to add this:

    Gray Fox Farms
    Jill Burnell
    Redwine

I wish everyone involved a positive outcome [and a negative one for Jill]. Sad situation, all around.

Not difficult at all - nor expensive. $40 for the parental check. Maybe a tad more if they have to do the mare's DNA to do the comparison.

Jockey Club need have nothing to do with it.
Thank you, Sonesta! This was a question I asked earlier.

Yeah for some reason they kept saying I had to sign a change of ownership form first which I wasn't willing to do because she is now and always was mine since the day she was born. Not sure what the mistake was but they have since figured it out and are cooperating.

I have sort of answered my own question thanks to those that were willing to share privately. There is somewhere in the neighborhood of 5-10 foals that were produced via "stolen" semen. As in shipments that she paid one stud fee on (or not at all) & inseminated multiple mares. I have counted 5 foals definitely, but it sounds as if there are a handful more. Now, if she registered those foals, she must have falsified the breeding certificates too.

Keep in mind this happened before she became a stallion owner, so 5 or more years back. Won't share names as that is not really my place to do so.

WOW, the range of complaints just keeps growing. Any chance they'll step forward and contact EquineDriver?

So what if it has two legit spellings, the other farms have nothing to do with this mess. Are you not getting why dragging farms that have nothing to do with JB into this is a problem? Or are you that challenged?
Hey let's add Equinedriver to the list of names that should be tagged as part of JB.
I find it interesting that you apparently find this so offensive. I guess I looked at it the same way as people that list things on ebay or Craigslist and tag the bottom of the listing with other spellings etc that help people pull it up. A quick read of the thread, WHICH INCLUDES JILL'S NAME, would tip off anyone that was looking for one of the other Grey Fox Farms that this was not the one they were looking for...........

I am in the 25 range I would guess. FWIW, starting Thurs or so, I am going to spend a few hours tracking down others mentioned from other lists and try to contact them to let them know of the file gathering and course of action we are taking and see if I can round up another 5 or 10. Undoubtedly, a file of 25 victims being sent to the Attorney General will garner much more attention that one or two.

I am also going to contact those that have had issues with sick horses, suspected bad semen etc and give them a contact for the CA USDA and State Vet office and see if that would generate any inspections etc. I figure the more different directions we try and generate action the better our odds.

I have also contacted a web page person I know about starting a web page that I can use to post any info about the progress.

Actually meant to add that you are more than welcome to tag my name. Hopefully it will help more victims find me. I am not ashamed of my role in this mess so do whatever you can to help them get in contact with me and forward me the information to add to the pile.

                        • The wheels of justice move slowly ... it will realistically be a while before anything occurs that would result in Jill Burnell going out of business in any way. However, equinedriver is doing a great job and it is well worth it.

In addition to the lawsuit that is planned, the "silent hand" of capitalism should also do it's work when people just will not do business with her.

She could also just turn things around and conduct business in a professional manner, that's also possible.

                            • As the House of Cards falls, I do have some concern for all those horses. She has done her "best" but if sales drop off etc, feed bills will be more difficult to meet. Her new place doesn't seem to have any nearby neighbors. Are any COTHers willing to take a drive to see if the general health of the horses can be monitored by passerbys?

If I googled the correct lot from the OP's link waaay back there in the first few of her posts there is a lane with two 10-15 acre lots and two very nice homes with shelters and horses outside. At the end of the lane is probably the original farmhouse so there are three sets of "eyes" on the one side. There is also a military training center on the other side although this is towards the back of their property. Unfortunately you can hide a lot on 30+ acres although it's pretty much a grassy plain. I haven't been to this exact spot but my commute route to work used to take me within about two miles and my old trainer had a place for a short time about four miles north. The bigger hills are more to the south IIRC.

ETA I think it's a private lane or driveway, not a public street.

It's an important message to be sure, and one that has been brought up before on this thread.

However, this typically sarcastic and passive aggressive comment by SA McKee, "Hey let's add Equinedriver to the list of names that should be tagged as part of JB" is actually a GREAT IDEA. That way people would read it and find out the Equinedriver is the go-to person for those who have trouble with Gray Fox Farm and Jill Burnell.

As a dressage person I thought I wouldn't know anything about these horses, I just looked on her website and saw my daughters former jumper, her "heart horse" there! Does anyone know anything about Hawai du Moulin? Fabulous horse! We sold her to another junior rider when my daughter went to college.

                                    • Heads up! Spamdexing and Keyword Stuffing

For what it's worth, an excessive number of repeated terms on a web page can result in search engine crawlers actually eliminating or penalizing a web page in search results. This occurs because such practices were not uncommon in the early days of the 'net with the intent of increasing the position of the page in the search engine rankings. Search engine managers realized what was happening and wrote code to prevent such practices from being successful. Most of the major search engines will consequently now penalize such practices.

                                      • That is interesting that you can use tag words too many times to get picked up by the search engines. While I agree that it is important to inform anyone who may consider breeding to one of her stallions or buy a foal or mare from her, I think we need to start right here. There are many of our "family" who are victims. If we can put an end to that it will be worth it. Then we can take on the rest of the horse world and make sure they are safe from her business practices as well.
