Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

  • Reminder - the Southeast Stallion Showcase is this Wed (Feb22nd)!

Just a reminder, the Southeast Stallion Showcase is this Wednesday (Feb 22nd)!

The Showcase is at the Canterbury Equestrian Showplace in Newberry, Florida, appx. 10 miles west of Gainesville. Easy to get to from I-75, and pretty easy to get to from Hwy 27 also (for people who are down at HITS.)

The Showcase will feature a variety of stallions -- Warmbloods, Lusitanos, Connemaras, a Friesian, a Friesian Sporthorse, a Thoroughbred, and even an Akhal-Teke.

The in-hand portion begins at 9:45, lunch is around noon, and the under saddle portion will begin at 1:00. The drawing for the free breeding will follow the under saddle portion. The cost is $10 and includes lunch and a chance for the drawing for a free stud fee from your choice of stallion featured in the Showcase. There will also be other giveaways, gift baskets, etc, and sponsor presentations, and a silent auction to benefit the Marion Therapeutic Riding Association.

For more information, here is the website: www.SoutheastStallionShowcase.com

Hope to see everyone there! Maybe if this event is a big success, it will open the door for more similar events

I will be there with my own stallion, Lexington. Please stop and say 'hi'!

Wish they had gotten more stallion participation. I wonder if the fact you might have to give away a breeding turned some stallion owners away?

I can't remember the exact amount -- I'd have to check the registration paperwork -- but if your stallion is the one chosen in the drawing your stud fee is partially reimbursed by the SSS. I'm not aware of any stallion owners mentioning the drawing being a deterrent........?

I think it's a pretty good turnout for the first year Sometimes with something new like this, people want to see how it goes first, and then maybe participate in the next one. The problem is, sometimes if you don't support it when it's new, there might not be a next one..... I really hope this event is a huge success, and next year stallion owners will be signing up in droves We hear it all the time -- why don't we have things like this in the US -- and now somebody has gone out on a limb to organize it, I hope people will come out and support it. And who knows, you might win a breeding in the process!

(And I should add, I'm entirely a volunteer in this process, I'm supporting it and promoting it simply because I think it's a neat idea, and I figure it should be a fun day. I've been telling friends and spreading around flyers for weeks, lol.)

Several of the stallions are owned and/or ridden by friends, so it will be fun to see them, and there are some stallions I've never seen in person before but am curious to see (like Windfall.) And it will be neat to see the Akhal-Teke, because I've never seen one before, and the owner of the Thoroughbred stallion posts here, so I'm looking forward to meeting her and seeing her stallion....... all in all I think it will be a fun day

Since you're in Gainesville, I hope you can make it!

I don't think this was the issue. I only found out about this event on January 8th (from a Facebook post by a FB friend) -- and I am only about 1 1/2 hrs from the event.

I already had work committments that prevented us from attending. I really wish that the event was on a Saturday or Sunday -- I think that attendence would have been higher both from stallions and from attendees. I know that would have made a difference for us.

I too hope that the event will be held again next year -- hopefully with more advance notice and maybe they could get some advance feedback from stallion owners about timing, etc.

I think that it is a great concept

It's a shame some people can't make it because it's a weekday, but I understand.

The organizer is very nice, and seems to be open to suggestions. It sounds like there are already tentative plans to do another one next year (on a Saturday *smile*!) If you want to follow the SSS, here is the facebook link, and of course the website is www.SoutheastStallionShowcase.com . That may be the best place to get the latest information on upcoming dates etc

I have to send MAJOR kudos to the organizers and participants of this very lovely event!

Such a golden opportunity to meet and greet sport horse stallions and their owners! For those who have stallions or are looking for stallions or breeders or even places to foal mares, this event is a must! It was so well done with vendors and feed reps as well as eyeD there to explain their technology!

I sincerely hope that they continue to have this event in the years to come! Being new(ish) to the area (and looking for information on breeders and foaling...not ANY responses on here!) it was a golden opportunity. I only wish that there were more breeders there taking advantage of this amazing venue....Thank you to organizers and best of all, there were MANY cool raffle baskets, services, etc for the benefit of Marion County Handicapped Riding....oh yes and the opportunity to win a free breeding to one of the stallions represented! I (sadly) was not the lucky winner but someone was!

Super idea ladies!!! Heads up stallion owners you missed a great chance to reach multiple customers with a dedicated interest in your stallion and reproductive services. I look forward to attending again next year!
The thing about smart people, is they look like crazy people, to dumb people.

I enjoyed the Showcase also. I thought it was really well organized. The program was absolutely first class, I thought the announcer did a very good job, the sponsor/vendor area was pretty and easily accessible, the gift baskets were very impressive, and there were so many prizes I lost track. I missed most of the presentation part because I was busy, but it sounded interesting, and lunch was a fun chance to visit and meet a few new people.

And most of all it was cool to see the stallions in person. Of course I'm partial to my own stallion, but they were all beautiful. And as a rider I enjoyed the under saddle portion -- I've never ridden in that type of setting and it was cool to be doing passage and one tempis and getting to hear applause from the audience, much different (and more fun) than the absolute silence of a dressage test in a competition setting.

As a breeder and mare owner, I also think it's great to be able to see the stallions in person, walk the barn areas, and talk to the owners and riders. We hear a lot about how American breeders are handicapped by the fact that we rarely get to see the stallions in person, but this was not the case yesterday. It was fun to have two people there who are breeding to my stallion this year, who got to see him in person, and even came to his stall to visit with him afterwards. It makes everything feel a little more 'personal'.

And I love meeting new people. Lunch was especially fun. I would definitely participate again next year.
