Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

  • Why can't IHF update their website! Argghhhh

Is anyone else annoyed that ihf never updates their website! The same dang horses are on their for sale and I know that there are way more out there for sale. I am sure owners would post their foals on their if the website was actually usable!

Just some examples, they could post videos of foals, have links to stallions videos and pictures and actually have offspring of each on their. This could be done right if ihf reached out and gathered information from foal Kane stallion owners. I know numerous people that have offered to give some time to help, so let's do this!

Stallion list isn't updated and so on. If there is anything I can do, I would be happy to!

Isn't there anyone that can beg them for a major website overhaul and move into this century.

    Pleeeessssse!!

We all spend good money to be a part of ihf and I feel that they should at least meet halfway and have a usable website.

Ernie went to great lengths in KY to tell ma about the new webmaster and how great the website was going to be. Right.

I really think we, the supporters of this organization, need to start a letter writing campaign and demand some changes be made and that we be listened to and included in the process. Been a long time since I have seen an org. so resistant to change and input.

I will be happy to do whatever it takes.
Maybe we can gather emails from supporters and all write an email? Someone can start it and forward and add what they want to say and then we can send the finished email to ihf? If they will even get it or read it is another story!

Maybe it's just a lost cause. I don't know. I mean I see a lot of breeders with 2009 stud fees still on their website, so updating websites is an issue for a lot of people!

I just really like the idea of young hunter development and hate to see this disappear.

I also want a place to be able to sell the hunters I breed if and when I decide to sell them.

Very frustrating...I have emailed Kathy and told her I would like to help. This was back in September 2011. She did answer me and said that she would discuss the offer with the board the next month. I have never heard back from her.

Yea...the website is really bad. They haven't updated the nominated foal page since 2008!

We activated our stallion for 2012 and nominated our 2011 Paparazzo colt...but, I don't know how long we will continue to support.

I am going to write a letter and cc every board member. I hate to see this thing die but we won't continue to support if the organization doesn't improve.

The website isn't even current for 2012 nominated stallions. How can a mare owner know with certainty if the stallion is current with IHF if the organization can't get it's act together to update the website?

This was the approach I had to take to get any kind of reply at one point. I have gotten more response to other queries since doing this. Sad.

The fact that they don't even update stallions is a huge issue.

Before I bred back to Roc USA I was considering Cunningham and she didn't nominate him and was interested but I can she why she didn't. It just doesn't seem legit to a lot of stallion and foal owners.

The majority of people use websites for everything and if done right, the ihf could have a great website that could actually tract ihf offspring which is what everyone wants!

I also know that they can change the pages because right after the regional competitions they always update that area of the website.

This is very important and I hope that the ihf hears us and takes our help.

I also think it's bad, I just nominated my stallion for the first time, how does someone knows witch stallions are entered if they are not on the website.
                  Hope it will change soon

You stallion owners have the most power, IMO, as you are the bread and butter of the program. Write emails and letters letting them know of your dissatisfaction with the website.

The stallion list is updated pretty regularly, it seems, on Facebook page "The International Hunter Futurity". But I certainly agree that the web site MUST be kept updated! MUST, MUST, MUST!

The problem with the FB page is that I am sure that Kathy also administers that, so same person as the wwbsite. I really think that actual letters, cc all the board, addressed to Ernie Shook, is thw more effective way to go. If he receives physical letters, that no one can run interference on, maybe he will see there is a serious problem. If he THEN ignores you, then it us another issue that will have to be addressed.

I had emailed the IHF several times last summer about getting the nominated horse list updated.

I did not get any replies.

At Warrenton I approached a rep from IHF who rather rudely blew me off.
The next day I was introduced to an IHF board member who while very polite, listened well, was unable to help me and sent me back to the person who blew me off the day before. LOL
To be fair, I'm sure she was busy and had a lot on her plate.

Needless to say I didn't go back to person # 1 for a repeat performance.

Since then I have emailed several board members. Two replied and told me I needed to address the issue with the person who blew me off. I haven't pursued it further.

I will support the program. I simply would like to see a list of the horses that are nominated. I do research on bloodlines and the IHF horses are part of my research files. There isn't any hidden sneaky purpose, I'm just interested in what lines do well in this futurity.

I'd cut them a little slack on the nominated stallions for 2012. The end of the registration period was 1/31 so they may still be processing late recordings. Very few websites for horse related stuff ( USEF included ) update every division every day for points. And posting on FB is entirely different than updating a page on a website.

In the real world I am a programmer and I maintain several websites related to equestrian competitions. I also keep points for a large East Coast HJ association. I have told the IHF I'd be willing to help.

                              No reply .

Perhaps a more forceful way to do this is come up with a list of our "suggestions," put them in a letter, and then have everyone "sign" it and send it to each board member. This isn't a new problem. It has gone on for as long as we have supported the IHF. I am not certain where the unwillingness to accept help comes from, nor the protectiveness of all things IHF. It is really very closed to those not on the board.

Laurie, count me in. I have already decided if something is not done differently in terms of customer service and showing an interest in making it a program that wants to attract more people and succeed (read:update the website!!!) I will probably not nominate Amazing next year. If I'm paying 600$ for him to be in the program, I want it to be an organization people WANT to participate in, and a good, current website, it just one element of that.

If they update Facebook then they should update the website. There is no excuse to not have foal and stallion info on the website. It's the same pictures from years ago and that is just ridiculous.

I have a foal due this year and honestlymimmay not even nominate.

If they have someone that updates the website and chances are they pay a monthly fee for updating, then someone reliable needs to be in charge of collecting the date and pictures etc. for the changes and submitting them to the web person on a regular monthly basis.

Then stallions and foal owners could send info to that person and this website could begin to be useful for everyone involved in ihf.

It wouldn't be costing the ihf more money and in turn they would make more money because more people would take them seriously because they actually have a workable sight with correct info, upcoming events, horses for sale by ihf stallions and upcoming clinics etc. etc.!

                                        Customer Service Priority #1

I don't often check this BB but happen to this morning and it just so happened the IHF had a conference call this evening. I brought the issue up and all BOD members agree that customer service has to be a priority. We are working REALLY hard to improve customer service at the office. We have had some technical issues related to the website and e-mail in the past and are working hard to improve and to provide more value to our "customers". We discussed the issues of more timely updating of the website and we will be addressing that in a 2nd call tomorrow morning.

If there are problems please contact Kathy at the office by phone and e-mail. If there are issues that aren't being addressed then please contact us as Board Members.

The program is very near and dear to us all and we want to see it succeed. We all realize that every part is not for everyone and that the program is not perfect. I welcome your input and hope that you will offer ideas about solutions, not just criticisms. Kathy Gilberston at the office is available to talk to anyone, I'm available to talk to anyone although I prefer e-mail also so I can share specifics with other Board members to review during meetings.

                                        Respectfully,

                                        Matt Davis
