Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

I have always loved working with Angela @ High Point Hanoerians in Chestertown, Maryland. The only complaint I have is sometimes it takes a bit to get a reply via email, but have you seen her stallions!?!? Im sure her inbox is chalk full of interested breeders

And although he left the horse industry, Damon Williams of Millstone Farm was awesome to work with. He owned Western Sun and Foxglen Himself, both RID's. He never hesitated to answer a question I had.

Rachel Spencer (Popeye K), Alicia (Escapade) and Prima Equestrian(Canadian VDL agent) have always been wonderful to deal with.

So far I have only had to deal with one terrible stallion owner.

When I was breeding, I had EXCELLENT service from Heike Albert (Feiner Stern), also from Rachel Ehrlich (Werbellin).

I have heard from many MOs of truly exceptional service from the following:
          High Point Hanoverians (Angela Bariler)
          Rainbow Equus (Edgar Schutte)
          Bridlewood Farm (Barb Schmidt)
On the Bit Farm (Cindy Wilkes)

Second/Third/whatever John and Kari Cassel. Not only did they send me frozen semen with only a couple hours notice (I had to have it the next am since the mare had a 42 follicle the day we checked her and was a 48 the next evening when we bred), they also actually talked my vet through the process of using frozen semen for the first time before he bred the mare. Then when the insemination resulted in kissing twins, they held my hand through THAT drama. I know for a FACT that they watched my filly being born on mare stare and continued to watch her while I had her up after she was born. They were just as excited to see her as they were to see their OWN foals. btw - this was an auction breeding and they made nothing off it. They are just the nicest people ever to deal with in any capacity.

Also LOVE Joe Pimentel (Impressionist and Oskar). Obviously he is my friend, but he is great to all of his MO. He WANTS the MO to be happy, and he WANTS to know about the resulting foals. He will do just about anything to get a baby on the ground for the MO. I have known him to collect at almost any hour of the day - and his stallions are not on a M,W,F schedule. The only thing hindering him is Fed Ex. He'll also talk a newbie through the breeding process and is a great hand holder.

The only other SO that I've dealt with (and am dealing with her now) is Siegi for Veneziano semen. Prior to this breeding, I had a mare that was bred to him and she was Johnny on the Spot dealing with the ATA so that I would have no probs registering the foal after the birth. (since I acquired the mare from an owner who had leased the mare, then got the mare back... needed a BC, and so forth). I just used one of two straws of frozen on my mare and she has been very helpful and accomadating to getting this mare rebred.

Though my experiences are small, Amy Stika I think tops my list.

I tried breeding my mare 2 years ago with what I believe to be crap semen from another stallion. Finally, when my vet said she would not waste my $ anymore with said above stallion, I got in touch with Amy, let her know my situation. She knew I had thrown alot of cash to the other stallion owners way, no contracts signed, no cash sent and a payment plan sent me Routinier semen. 1 try with Rudy and may mare produced a premium GOV foal!

Also, great and positive experiences with Angela Barilar ( > 90% on Sintra Song semen!),
And also last year working with Rick R. Silva from DreamStreet Stallions was very easy as well. I have a Starlight on the way next month!

I've had great experiences with Liz at Silverwood, Gina at Centuar Farms, and Sherry & Jon with Nico! In all cases, I have been a repeat customer, and am looking forward to a 2009 breeding contract with Liz and Gina AGAIN

Unfortunately, I HAVE had negative experiences, won't mention the SO, but it was an approved Friesian stallion. Wasted a TON of time and money, put my mare through hormone hell, all to find out later on the stallion had been injured and that was why the collection schedule kept changing, or the semen wasn't good or we got only one dose (that wasn't usable anyway). Won't waste my money on THAT stallion again (by the way, my stud fee was NOT refunded).

Have also had less than stellar experiences, nothing I'd label as bad, but stallion owners that didn't have the greatest communication, or that were overly demanding or restrictive (and don't let you know ALL the rules until after you've signed the contract, yup, it happens, and sure, you can legally challenge it, but who wants to put the time and $ into that?).

Thank goodness for the good SOs! They deserve a round of applause!

I've had wonderful experiences with a few different SO's.

Leah from Winding Oaks Welsh has been fantastic to deal with, and the foals by her stallion Oliver Twist were wonderful! I'm breeding my TB mare back to him for the second time as the first foal was just awesome, and I had another gorgeous foal by him from a different mare.

I've had wonderful service from Liz Hall at Silverwood Farm.

I've also had excellent service from Metropolitan Stud in NY. They are TB race breeding farm, but they accommodated a mare of mine at the last minute. When they found out that the resulting foal wasn't going to be registered because of bad front legs(no fault of the mare or the stallion, he just must have been laying wrong in utero), they offered a free breeding to another TB stallion. Unfortunately I lost the mare, so no foal.

I have dealt with another BN breeding farm, and while the service was good, the semen wasn't. They did allow me to switch stallions, and I finally got a foal from that breeding.

I have had great service from Barb Schmidt, Judy Yancey and Mary Shirley when Pikadero was alive. All have bent over backwards for me. It is good to hear that Angela Barilar has been good to others as she never returned my phone call and my mare was bred today with frozen from Judy Yancey.

Well, my mare was bred in the past (not by me) to HPH with Angela and she was great to work with - very honest and forthcoming when a stallions of hers was not shooting/shipping the best stuff at that moment. An alternate stallion was used, who in hind-sight may have been a better match, she caught on the first try and had a wonderful filly! How frustrating it could have been to try & try with no result - Angela gets a thumbs up for integrity !

This was my first time breeding a mare, and JP & Shelley Giacomini were absolutely wonderful to deal with. I left my mare for live cover, and they took wonderful care of her, and made sure to call me with updates (everything from "she doesn't seem to be going into heat on schedule, does this seem normal for her at all? vet should come out and check her follicle" to "she is all tucked in her stall, warm and cozy out of the rain"). They even picked her feet every other day for me. My mare took on the first cover, and they arranged the ultrasounds for the first 30 days until i took her back home. They have also been very helpful with questions I had along the way, as well as after my filly was on the ground. Very prompt with paperwork as well. They even sent me a Christmas card

They stand 4 or 5 Lusitano stallions. Not only was my experience wonderful, and I am sure I will keep in touch with them for years to come, but this filly is everything I could have wanted. Their stallions really stamp their offspring, and my half-Lusitano filly is no exception.

Paul and Darlene Morgan (breeders of Popeye K, used to stand Tricolore) were absolutely *wonderful* to work with both times I was breeding mares to their stallions.

They are fair, efficient, communicate well, go out of their way for mare owners (set up a breeding and shipment for me in under 24 hours when a different stallion I was booked to had an accident), and their rates and contracts are extremely friendly for mare owners.

Plus their young stock do very well in shows all over North America, so I trust their judgement as breeders and stallion owners. That goes a long way in my book!
