Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

  • Need Exact Breeders' Cup Broadcast Times

I don't get ESPN. Am sending an order to a totally non-horsey but ESPN-getting friend. Friend would not actually watch this, just set the machine to tape it. What are the starting and supposed ending times of the BC broadcast for both days? I'll pad the ending time, of course, in case of running over. Thanks a bunch.

You can go to ESPN.com to find the times. Just click on horses. Of course you would probably be better off waiting until it gets a little closer.

Only released early this evening is the actual race order for the 24th Annual Breeders' Cup

Friday's racing card will have 10 races at Monmouth Park, but only the last three are "Breeders' Cup" races:

        (All Times are Eastern Standard)

        $1-million Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (4:25 p.m.)
        $1-million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (5 p.m.)
        $1-million Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (5:35 p.m.).

        Saturday's racing card:

$2-million Grey Goose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) (12:30 p.m.)
        $2-million Bessemer Trust Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) (1:10 p.m.)
        $2-million Emirates Airline Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1) (1:55 p.m.)
        $2-million TVG Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) (2:35 p.m.)
        $2-million NetJets Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) (3:20 p.m.)
        $2-million Emirates Airline Breeders Cup Distaff (G1) (4:05 p.m.)
        $3-million John Deere Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1) (4:50 p.m.)
$5-million Breeders’ Cup Classic Powered by Dodge (G1) (5:35 p.m.).

Big props to Grey Goose Vodka for stepping up the plate and sponsoring the JV Fillies which have otherwise been without a title sponsor. Although let's just hope folks skip on using vokda on the field in this way! - $15 a shot in Nebraska? Did the Vet think he was "serving drinks" in NYC?

Thanks. My non horsey friend has instructions and will hopefully execute them without flaw.

9 hours of BC coverage? Wow. Hope they have some good people doing it.

          • #6
What are they going to do for the last hour?

            • Original Poster

Maybe they're allowing some extra on the broadcast in case of delays at some point in the day (like Exogenous or determining the dead heat in the BC Turf). Can be wrap up if needed but makes sure the broadcast won't run over?

              • #8
I hope so-normally it seems like they have to wrap it up so quickly.

Well, thank God I checked here, or else I would have been cursing the big three networks for not showing it!!

Actually, fingers crossed here for better coverage on EPSN. They tend to be sooooo much better than the nattering neighbobs of the big 3.
Congratulate me! My CANTER cutie is an honor student at Goofball University!

Nope. NBC held it from inception in 1984 until 2005; 2006 marked the shift to ESPN who has the rights for several more years.

                      Fear not those without cable!

Finally, the Breeders’ Cup announced that for the first time all of its races will be available live on the internet, at Breederscup.com. Breeders’ Cup president Greg Avioli said it is only the second time in United States major sports history that a sports championship event will be available live on the Web.
As an aside ... no US-based horse racing/betting channels have inked a deal yet with the BC folks (spooky isn't it) so for right now no HRTV or TVG will be airing it. Both hope to get agreements in place but there is a rub with California wagering laws that are causing major problems.

Worth pointing out ... on the air:

October 23rd: Breeders Cup Draw (ESPNEWS, 11:30 a.m. ET)

                        October 24th: Selection Show (ESPN2, 5:00 p.m. ET)

And regarding the racing cable channels they did finally ink a deal last last week to carry the wagering and I assume the signal onto their respective channels, e.g. HRTV and TVG; TVG can be obnoxious enough that I'll stick with ESPN's coverage

AHA! I set my DVR last night and noticed Saturday's show only goes till 6, not 7 pm like initially stated. bummer.

I might sound retarded, but is ESPNEWS some special extra sports cable channel? I get like 200 channels, but I don't see that channel.

I can't wait to hear the call when SS crosses under the wire first

It is and sometimes ESPN effectively shares ESPNews into their broadcasts on the hour but otherwise it is a separate channel. I have it, but its far away on channel 402.

The coverage on ESPNews is sadly a pairing of the always well informed and smooth analyst Randy Moss and the anchor guy who wouldn't know a mule from Man O'War

At Noon eastern is the actual drawing of positions.

I suspect BreedersCup.com may also cover it and the BloodHorse.com and DRF.com will have the positions up pretty quickly after it happens ... this is 2007 not 2002 with waiting for news in next day's issue of the paper

Worth pointing out: Trevor Denman will be calling the races for ESPN's TV coverage again this year. It is unclear if the live coverage on BreedersCup.com site will be Trevor or the track's announcer, Larry Collmus. For those on-site to watch the race in person you'll hear Larry and not Trevor

                                  "And awaaay they go..."

One day last year we caught sight of Kenny Mayne at Epcot with his family... My husband restrained me from chasing him down. I thought anyone that could say such incredibly stupid things about horses on national television deserved to be thrown into the lagoon.

Kenny has been conspicuously absent from being part of the on-air talent this year. He was only resigned to a 1-year deal in Jan 2007 with ESPN so one could read into that and say relatively speaking he's "on the outs" with the network.

In defense of Kenny - who is a real fan of horseracing - I think the producers have purposely used him to "jazz up" the coverage. His outlandish style was, in ESPN's view, going to attract and retain viewer interest when the horses weren't running. It flopped at times to be sure. Although I'll always think of his phrase Invasor, because he is the best with a smile.

I myself can do without the annual appearance of Muttonchops in the Sherlock Holmes garb on Breeders Cup day.

I really like Denman, but I hope he doesn't miss Street Sense again.

And I like Kenny too. I just like his sense of humor. He has a lot of fans so I am guessing a lot of people do. Of course, there are a lot who don't...regardless, the last few ESPN shows have been SO boring, with the exception of the horses and racing. Whether you like Kenny or not, I think it is hard to deny that the dynamics of the show between Kenny, Randy, and Jerry are very entertaining.

Interesting that he has not responded at all on the Breedercup.com Talk Back or whatever its called.

The one that drives me nuts is that kid-Quint...is that his name? He acts like he is reporting in the trenches from a battle site. And HE says some retarded things and I always catch him mispronouncing a name. He's gotta go.

But hey, as long as the sound works, the cameras dont confuse me (ala KD this year), everybody comes home safe, and SS wins, it will be the grandest of days

Btw, where is Drvmb? Always has such good insight...
