Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

  • So who has a new horse since the last fireworks holiday?

    How are they reacting?

I found out that Houdini is not worried at all about fireworks. Nutcase ladies who suddenly appear beside him in their white nightgowns while he's distracted by the fireworks, OTOH, provoke a snort.

We're having a lovely break in the heat this weekend - it barely broke 80F yesterday - so I moved Houdini up to my riding ring and got started erecting walls around his Carolina Carport shelter. (I want something more weighing that contraption down before our first hurricane.)

Houdini's paddock is at the back of the farm, with woods on three sides. The riding ring is at the front, with a 360 degree view of all that goes on. I was setting my last post last night when I heard the first *whizzzz-bang!* and thought, "oh, crumbs." I'd been so excited by the weather and a building project, I'd forgot what day it was!

I went out to check on him about ten last night, when the explosions really got going. Other than being initially surprised by my appearance, he was cool as the other side of the pillow.

Anyone else finding out how their new horse reacts to fireworks?

Hope everyone's horses are safe through the 4th this year.

Well, one good thing about living in the Land of Fireworks for Any, All and No Occasions is that horses get used to periodic pyrotechnics very quickly. By the time the biggest displays at the 4th and New Year's come around, it's just a little more of what happens almost weekly.

Houdini sounds like a good, sensible boy. Congratulations on the new member of your herd; and I'll second the good wishes to everyone else and their horses today.

Not one, two newbies - Sam & his pony Kouma.

But like coloredhorse, legal home pyrotechnicians here start "practiing" at least one week before The Day.

Not to mention target practice at various days and/or times of day.
Or the personal-sized aircraft that buzz the pastures on nice days.

Neither seemed bothered by any of the above & since I am 2K miles away this holiday, they will have to deal.

I have no clue how my new boy is going to be b/c I'm staying away from the barn - too hot! And besides a close neighbor blasts his cannon (big civil war thing) at irregular intervals throughout the day. I rather my horse be in his stall where he feels he safe the first few times he hears that!

We have several newcomers since last July 4, but, as we are SOOO rural, we don't get any really heavy fireworks here.

One neighbor practices with some sort of 1800s shot type gun about 200 yards from our main pasture a few times a month, so ours have gotten pretty used to THAT noise, as well as rather loud "after dark gatherings" around campfires at another 'close' neighbors.

Not a newbie, but new to the US. I don't think she's seen a big fireworks display before (or possibly even a small one, not sure), but she has seen and heard choppers landing, armored vehicles firing, and ordnance exploding. I hope she won't care.

We got a new gelding Friday - so far he seems fine and hasn't really flinched at all the noise. I have been afraid to ride at all the last 3 days though because people keep setting off what sound like M80's at all hours of the day....grrrrr. None of my horses really mind, but I'm not taking a chance.

I have a new mare, and she seems to be unfazed at the moment, I just came up from the barn where they are all hanging out to stay dry, as it is still drizzling here today. I tossed them some hay to munch on, and no one lifted their heads as I left. And there are fireworks noises coming from all directions for whatever reason. Luckily none close by.

Amazing in this economy that folks have that much disposable income to spend on fireworks.

Ha. Lucky for me the fellow with the pond house just behind my pasture had his wife read him the riot act for spending so much money outside their home.

Last year, sounded like Sherman's army back for a rematch. This year? Eh - more like Casper the ghost farting in the wind.

I have a new gelding and he's put an ear on the fire crackers that have been going off since Friday but as long as hay is in front of him he is just fine.

Well, the fireworks were right next door and the old guy was a little perturbed. We have a fair amount of shooting going on here at any time so he has had all spring to get used to bangs and pops, but the screamers were bit much, plus the actual lights overhead. We were debating putting them out in the back, next year we just might. He seems fine now.
The pony only flinched for the loud ones, I'm proud of him and see his future in cowboy mounted shooting!

We have new horses but they seem to take their cue from the "old" ones who don't even lift their heads.

I'm lucky -- the farm is on 110 acres so as long as people are not being totally insane, i.e. coming right onto the property, we should be fine. It's not that much louder than the guns of hunting season. Being in a valley, I can see fireworks in all directions simultaneously which is kind of cool. That's as close as I need to get to them!

I'm still going to fret for a while though... this is the first year I'm here at the farm without either my horse partner or the farm owner.
Shall I tell you what I find beautiful about you? You are at your very best when things are worst.

Petey doesn't even cock an ear. However, if the wanna be pyrotechnicians are close enough that he can see them he will trot right over to where they are lighting up in the hopes somebody either has a treat they will give him or will scratch his big ol' Quarter Horse butt LOL!! Man I love that horse.

Yep, 2 new ones on the farm. No problems out of either of them. (A Paso Fino and a breeding stock Paint). Didn't even notice.

I have 2 new FLs TBs and for the most part they were OK. It wasn't so much the fireworks that upset them but the M-80s. Those things rock the earth and the sound of the exlosion is intense. That set the filly off. But she just watched the ordinary fireworks.

My new mare (who just had surgery on Thursday) did really good. I was a bit nervous as her previous owner told me she really freaks out and breaks out in a sweat. It was raining last night...but not too hard and I kept the fans, lights and music on. Everyone did great! Maddie handled it with no sweating! I am sooo thankful! July 4th and New Years are not my fav holidays...too worried about all the horses. Not so much my own anymore but I know alot of people and thier horses have a hard time with this.
