Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

Thanks for being a part of the COTH forums!

Why haven't you? If you scroll down past the article there is a place to post comments; you could post your reactions there if you want to. You can also e-mail Campana directly. Maybe you personally can't stop it but you can make your voice heard where it might count. Or share it on FB from their link, with your comments.

Great idea and already done but I was really thinking along the lines of people that can actually DO something to help the pony out of this situation. Not random comments on a website or an email from someone out in the ethernet.
I'm on the wrong side of the country to do anything in person.

I don't do FB so won't be doing that.

I was recently added by a friend to a 'disabled pets' group on Facebook and this man is "their hero." They saw the article about the pony and everyone is cheering. It's pretty awful.

You mean the man who makes the prosthesis, Campana, or the man who owns the mini Green?

Some years ago a woman vet whose name I forgot gave a mare an artificial leg. She took the hoof and grafted it onto the leg around the knee area, thus giving the horse a growing hoof upon which to attach the prosthetic leg and artificial hoof that touched the ground. The mare foaled, and nursed her foal, teaching the foal to nurse while the mare was lying down. I guess to ease pressure on the leg as the mare was able to walk around on her prosthetic device.

The mare looked normal save for her leg, and appeared comfortable in the pictures. Of course she had been taken in by the vet so she had good care. I thought it was great that he hoof grew and was trimmed. I don't know how long she lived, but I thought it was interesting that they used the same stump socks that were used by human amputees.

The subject of this thread has an ill fitting prothetic device and seems to be in pain.
Different vet, bad results for the mini.

I think I'd try some kind of sling that would have wheels and allow the horse to move around before I'd try a prosthetic device.

horrific, and I can't find a single video where the mini is actually moving around.

Forcing this mini to stay alive until she suffers a catastrophic break down in her hind limbs so they can raise money to feed horses they can't afford is cruel.

It reminds me of the horrific road side amputations of broken endurance horse legs in the middle east and the cobbled together prosthetic because putting anything down isn't God's will. Some of the most haunting images I've ever seen so rich men can get richer.

When you look at the videos you can see how many of them are of the mini laying down and how the damage to the hind legs increases as she gains weight, and as she becomes less and less active as the pain increases. As a foal she runs around a bit in the wheel chair, but as a two year old she isn't shown moving except for a few times and you can clearly see the deformities increasing in the hind legs.

The guy who made the prosthesis is not a Vet nor is there a Vet on his staff at his clinic in FL.

The mini did have a cart, like paralyzed dogs get, and seemed to manage well with that, no idea why they went to a prosthetic... this is the 2nd or 3rd they've used from different clinics.
I was sad to see that after this visit to FL for this fitting the pony was driven from Maine to CA to try out for a commercial... oy.
I can't imagine why the mini needs to be doing that.
I would imagine the trip from Maine to the clinic in FL and back is bad enough.

I did ask on the Facebook page of the prosthetic clinic about the length of the limb, and why it's not longer to better approximate how she would stand if she had her natural limb, ie les weight on the front end.... I think they erased my question... so I reposted it... Regardless of how I feel about this case, I do wonder about that in general.

The mini's Facebook page seems to be inaccessible at the moment. I wonder if they don't like the response they're getting...

I saw a version of this article on Facebook, with a bunch of non-horse animal rights-ish people talking about how beautiful and wonderful this is. Meanwhile horse people tried to explain that no, it's not, horses aren't designed to live on three legs, and she looks terrible and in pain and really should be put down. And then the responses about "Well if you lose your leg as a human I guess we'll just kill you too." No explaining it to people who just don't get it.

                              Gotcha'.

I think they are both [owner** and prosthetist] are getting and enjoying a bit of fawning at the minis expense.
And Furlong indeed, the lack of knowledge about horses and how they function and the reality that being 3 legged is basically a death sentence, whether they die fast or slowly, is lost... even when you bring up Barbaro and how he had the best most costly care***, and in the end died from laminitis. At least with Barbaro advances were made wrt to laminitis. *sigh*
The delicate giant idea of horses is lost on them.

** I do wonder about who actually owns this mini. This man is the primary at a 501c3, if the dam and grand-dam of this mini were rescues, then doesn't the mini belong to the rescue itself and not Green?

*** I also notice on the website/FAcebook page for the prosthetic guy... and in the videos they mention that prosthetics is a cheaper option compared to Vet procedures for these issues... I may have scrimped on many things, but getting the animal I am steward to quality care regardless of cost is something I believe very firmly in.

That poor little horse looks absolutely miserable.

Something is also seriously wrong with her hind legs, like a horrible case of DSLD or severe, untreated founder. There's no way those back legs don't hurt.

I think some people don't realize that death isn't the worst thing that can happen to an animal. The kindest thing to do for this poor horse would be to feed her some favored food and then euthanize her. Being in constant pain and unable to move easily is no life.

Why isn't this considered a criminal cruelty to animals case?
This quack isnt even a licensed veterinarian. How does he do the surgery and pain management without licensing and credentials to access prescription meds?
Please don't tell me there are real vets out there willing to "assist" in this sham. It's obvious Campana has zero knowledge about horses' natural life needs. No compassion, either. He just wants to be a hero, show off his ... what? Insanity? Who are the enablers???? The pony's owners? Where is the outrage that will actually relieve this darling of its suffering?

I really get bothered by all these extraordinary efforts taken to save severely disabled animals when so many healthy ones are destroyed every day. I especially stress over animals in "wheelchairs." What happens to them when they're not in their wheels, like at night? They're stuck in one spot, can't even move to another spot if they need to pee or poop, until someone comes along to give their wheels back? Is that really worth it for the animal?

Deplorable. This is something out of a horror movie made for horses. Other than contacting Campana, is there something else that can be done, or some agency that can be contacted to review this case?

I have never seen such a tortured expression on an animal's face.
