Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

Thanks for being a part of the COTH forums!

Re-feeding syndrome is a major concern. You just can't say poor hungry pony, eat whatever you want to gain that 100#. I've been told by my vets and in doing a bit of reading that RFS happens usually within 3-4 days. Horse colics & dies.

"Less is more" means you can't do everything at once when a horse is in a bit more trouble than just being hungry - vaccines, major worming, teeth and sedation, antibiotics if needed, a bunch of hauling, etc. And there is always a chance that the horse is compromised in ways that you can't see on the inside or always show strong signs of something in complete blood workups. In my personal experience the younger the horse the easier to overcome neglect. Too many things at once will overload any rescue animal, not just a horse.

Timmie had multiple issues and I knew that going in. He was under vet care before he even got here. By just looking at his photos it was determined he could have no more than a cup of mush that first night with some hay to nibble. That's what's in his green bucket......a handful of easy going Lucerne Farms chopped hay. He couldn't really eat it but gave it his best shot as you can see!

You can't do this alone. It does take a village. If I didn't have confidence in my vets and farrier & equine nutritionist and very supportive husband who does my stalls nearly every day so I can tend to special needs I would never be able to do this. I'm not a rescue. I am able to help when needed but only because of my village.

Now Timmie hadn't made it yet to be under the care of the nutrionist. The first thing we had to do was get him a little bit of weight so he could have the energy to fight the other stuff. I'd like to think he gained all this weight but he didn't. He DID fill out and his spine & hind end weren't just bones and those shark withers. Huge difference in 2.5 weeks. I'm not a fan of alfalfa and won't do that unless my vets would say to and that wouldn't happen often.

I have zero regrets. Now, I could have gone further. I could have had him hospitalized on Sunday (he was still eating on Sat.) and force fed through a tube 4-6 times a day. He would have suffered. And I could have put him on a trailer to go to OSU or Rood & Riddle in Lexington to explore his GI tract. He would have suffered and in all likelihood die on the table. Both options would have meant a painful and delayed but enevitable death. And he didn't die of hyperlipemia entirely. My vet had a horse that had trigliceride levels of 5500. I think just presented really lethargic.

This old boy was just wore out. First thing Sunday morning his pulse started to rise. Not good. He went on fluids as described by "hundredacres". Pulse came back down quickly. At the time the decision was made to let him rest his pulse started racing. It was an immediate no-brainer.

      (for TT)

      I was broken, beaten down
I was scared, there was no one around
I held on, hoping an angel would come
And I could live my golden
      Days in the sun

Then you picked me up so I could fly away,
You picked me up, knowing I might not stay,
You gave me hope and you helped me try,
But in the end, I just needed
      To fly

Why I’m leaving, I can not say
But I know I won’t be far away
Because you saved me from the dark
And I will never leave my
      Place in your heart

You picked me up so I could fly away,
You picked me up, knowing I might not stay,
You gave me hope and you helped me try,
But in the end, I just needed
      To fly

I’ve crossed the bridge and I’ve found the way
To greener pastures, where the old horses stay
Free from pain and free from fear
And I had wings to fly here

      Because of you

          Dear Santa,
My name is Tiny Tim. I am a small pony living in Ohio, and I'm better than thirty years old. I'm gettin' up there, Santa. I'm not certain my people understand this at all. I can't chew so well, I'm hungry all the time, and I have arthritis. I don't feel so great, but I try really hard to pull the cart for the kids because they really like it and give me big hugs! Anyhoo, Santa, I'm really tired these days. So my Christmas wish is a spa vacation at a place I heard of here in Ohio. The give warm bran mashes every meal, body massage, provide snowsuits for winter sports, horsie hair cuts, and nothin' but true love, Santa. So could you please include me on your list? If not, I understand you're busy, and it's a little late for me to ask. But here's hoping!
          Sincerely, Tiny Tim
ps Santa, please make sure your reindeer get a big thankyou for a job well done. They deserve it.

This one did me in. Poor Tim. He got his best wish/prayers answered. I mean really, what can be better than knowing you gave an old, tired, sick little man his best days and a comfortable end?

I don't feel so great, but I try really hard to pull the cart for the kids because they really like it and give me big hugs! The kids don't realize how much they have grown and that it gets harder and harder for me to pull them. They also don't realize how the harness doesn't fit well and gives me terrible rubs. With my long matted coat, they can't see the wounds getting infected. I also wish my people would take one of my herd mates to the birthday parties instead of me - I am just not up to the endless pony rides anymore. I try to be good...I only protest with a little buck when they ride double.

I hear that at that spa in Ohio they also have farriers, who make your hooves feel better, and special pasty treats that get rid of those nasty parasites that hurt your belly.

And Santa, I hope that spa isn't too far away. I don't think I can handle a really long trailer ride before I finally get to rest.

I really do understand; but this is where Timmy can teach us one more thing. He wasn't bitter, he was just extremely grateful things changed. Whether or not THOSE people learn anything, his story (as it continues to spread whether we share it at our work or folks get to read about it in magazines, etc) will surely help OTHER equines whose owners/neighbors learn what is right and what is wrong.

                  • Tiny Tim's story is heartbreaking and he's been on my mind for days. I keep coming back to this thought: he had been "fighting" for survival for so long when his rescuers stepped up to battle FOR him - Timmie could finally relax and go in peace. (not sure if it makes any sense but it somehow makes me feel better) Thanks to all who took up TT's battle.

I got that, sorry if I wasn't clear. I don't think he would want us to be bitter either; it won't help him or any of the other lonely pones in the world....

Sigh. I *know* I shouldn't hold grudges. I know better. But I do.
I will never forgive those people.
But, I will move on and put my energy towards positive things, keeping that grudge in the back of my mind.

                              • I called Paddys Mom just a little while ago. It was 3 weeks ago today she was tappin' her feet ready to do the hard deed of actually going there and leaving without saying anything. We talked about being upset and how lucky we were to see & feel Timmie up close. I have to admit that when I see this ad by the same owner http://equine.com/Horses/ad_details....a-b4a92630bffc I wonder how many pony rides Timmie had to give to pay for her trims. Why does SHE get trims and Timmie didn't? Sounds almost childish doesn't it? But deep down I'd still like to know but really already do. Some people just don't care.

Ya can't change stupid. The best you can do is educate those that want to learn and be ready to help those that are stuck in a less than ideal situation. And of course fine the h*ll out of those that do it intentionally.

I think that's the most heart-breaking thing I've ever read on this board. I have to stop reading now.

I know an old schooling horse. His owner is a 'pro'. She brags that he's her most valuable animal because he helps her pay the bills. The four other horses are for 'showing'. Last week, I watched that old horse carry his newest novice around the arena. He was HEAD BOBBING LAME . As the young girl mentioned he didn't want to move today, the owner/trainer/instructor 'taught' her about the need to be firm and kick the horse on.

There's no doubt in my mind EL pegged Timmie's former life with her comment. What are we supposed to do? I'd like to find his former owner, knock her on her a$$, pommel her bloody, cut her a few times, then make her get back up and work and ask her how she likes it? I'd wind up in jail and she'd sue me for everything I own. And probably win. Welcome to reality.

The next time the 'pros' at my barn complain about lack of money, I'm going to have a very good time slipping a comment into the conversation about how much money I contributed to help a little pony. Then I'll turn my back on them and walk away.

                                    • Poor Timmie. It is so true that the kindest gentlest souls at the barn always seem to pay the bills for all the rest, don't they?

El, why did you have to post that link for their other ponies?? Why?? Now I want to start a collection to get the rest of them out of there!

Did you notice that Saddlebags, the stallion, is out with at least the one filly - want to bet he is out with the rest of them too? I'm thinking if you bring home a mare you might be bringing home more than you bargained for.

                                      • The little 2 y/o filly, Flower, has a wry nose and is being sold for $200.

I REALLY want to post a comment on their ads, all of them, linking back to this thread...something like, "Before you buy a horse from these people, read THIS."

                                        • When I reported my sister for animal neglect I had broken bottles from one end of my road frontage to the other. People do really bad things and will retaliate if felt threatened - against people & animals. Please do not contact Timmie's former owner. They have Paddys Mom address.
