Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

  • I'm late to this thread but I'm in for next year if you want to make saving a pony an annual Christmas event. I've been trying to think of some things my girls and I could do in lieu of some presents next year... my kids really do not need a bunch of junk every year. This would be a cool "charity" to help with.

I do think giving them a Christmas name, in the tradition of Tiny Tim, would be really cool (I always wanted a pony named Mistletoe as a kid). I just read over 21 pages of this and it really made my day after spending the evening stressing and shopping. Kinda made all that seem pretty insignificant. Thinking about Tiny Tim warm and safe and fed in his new stall brought a smile to my face.

Kudos to equinelaundry, Paddys Mom and everyone who made this happen. Very cool

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays all!

              • More of the Story...

I arrived at the farmand noticed everything seemed okay. Not "first rate and fancy" but in good enough repair. There were 3 cows in good condition, many chickens and roosters running around, and two turkeys. Went into the barnyard area and saw about 9 ponies. They all appeared healthy, in good flesh. Went into the barn and there was Tiny Tim.

The owner's brother tried to put on a teeny tiny halter, claiming it was Tiny Tim's, but I stopped him and put on the halter I had brought. He insisted on clipping his bridle path while I stood there. I didn't even want to talk to the guy, as everything he said made me sadder.

"He pulls the cart real good, but he is a little slower now."
"You can still ride him but he doesn't seem to like it much."
"He does just fine out on the pasture, but you can also give him this much <indicates a 1 qt scoop> of that senior food."
"My kids will be sad, they still like to ride him, but at 9 and 7 they are getting too big."

I handed him the money envelope. I did not have the heart or the patience to negotiate.
I asked him to sign the bill of sale and I gave him a signed copy. He was still talking about the pony as I started to lead him away. I had heard enough...too much.
I saw the wry nose filly up close. She was in good shape and friendly.

TT hesitated once and then stepped cautiously into my trailer.
I had a bucket of mostly water and a little pellets waiting.
He started slurping and I drove away, promising an update to the brother...FAT CHANCE.

I drove a few miles away and stopped at a McDonald's. There I gave him a once over.
He has infected looking sores on either side of his nose. Seller says it is from TT scratching himself on the fence. He has large knees for his size - guessing arthritis. He has a large lump on the inside of his left hind cannon bone - old injury I guess. He has various chunks of hair missing, including several that interestingly fall right where a harness would. His feet are longer than they look in the picture - his fetlock hair overhangs by quite a bit - and they are completely ragged. I don't know when he has seen a farrier. He has a wormy belly but his spine is very easily felt. I opened his mouth and found no teeth on the top. His coat is disgustingly matted and feel like acrylic.

I covered him with a cooler because he started to shake - fear, cold, fatigue? I poured the water off and let him eat the mush that was left. He slurped it and much of it would fall back out of his mouth with a peculiar whistling sound. I ran in for a burger and when the lady forgot my apple dippers I told her my pony wouild be sorely disappointed. She gave me two. He mashed them up quite easily.

Met up with equinelaundry (what a wonderful woman!) and we talked for a few minutes, signed the bill of sale to her, and told TT to come on out. He hopped out of my trailer and hesitated at hers. Aren't I DONE? But he did see a bucket in the there and decided it was a good idea.

I have the utmost confidence that equinelaundry and her vet will get him back to health.

Thank you guys for your help.
Last count, my Paypal was at $360. TT was $400 plus $100 in gas. I know more is on its way. Anything over that $500 I am sending to equinelaundry, despite her protests!

I was glad to participate. There have been so many good deeds done here on COTH and this was the first I could help with.

                      • Ok, Paddy's Mom, your last post has done me in. I 'm sitting here extremely misty eyed ( ok, nearly bawling) at the description of Tim. It seems that you guys were not a moment too soon in rescuing him. Poor little sweetie pie, it sounds as if he's had a full lifetime of work.No wonder he doesn't much like being ridden anymore, if he is so thin and exhausted from the parasites, lack of teeth & age.
I feel so much better knowing that he will have a forever home with love and decent care at Equine Laundry's farm. And Pink Daisy- thanks for managing the funds and the orchestrating the rescue. You guys are truly Christmas angels for making sure that this happened and Tim got out of there & into a safe home.

When I found my filly Bashirah she wasn't so different from Tim- 11 hh & 340 lbs @ 1 year old ( she's an Arab). She was horribly bloated from the parasites and her hip bones and spine protruded sharply. She was crawling with lice. You could even see the rings of her trachea in her thin & spindly neck. Her coat was shorter than Tim's but rough and she had this peculiar smell like an burned match for weeks. She really didn't smell like a horse at all, just that wretched acrid odor. With months of careful worming and feeding and constant nuturing she became the healthy yearling that she should have been. She's a bit stunted from the neglect, but I don't care. I like my horses smaller anyhow.

I look forward in the new year to hearing (reading, really) of Tiny Tim's rebound to health with the loving care that I know Equine Laundry will be lavishing on him.

When I go the barn in the morning I'll be whispering in my once rescued little filly's ear about how her distant cousin Tiny Tim got himself a new Christmas home. Surely he's got a little dash of Arab in there with those big brown eyes...Maybe???

                        S.

Great idea for a fundraiser - either for his care, if his bills look to be large or to save next year's Christmas Pony! I know I'd buy some Tiny Tim cards!

                              • Wonderful to see him happily eating and know that he's going to get the care that he needs.

Paddy's Mom, did you get any idea of whether these people were breeding ponies? Looking at their other ads made me wonder, as they have several young ponies for sale of similar types. My first thought was, let's find homes for all of them... But then if they are breeding more, that doesn't really help the situation. It kind of encourages it. What was your impression?

And did they ask at all why you were buying him or what your plans were for him? That's always my first question to ask a prospective buyer. If they didn't ask, it would make me wonder.

                                      • The Christmas Pony is doing very well. I swear he smiles and the perky meter has gone way past what I had hoped for the first night. He's peeing, pooped, drinking and gobbled down the cup of soaked equine senior. He's now happily slurping soaked chopped forage with another couple bags of bedding added. He has no idea how it's gonna feel after a floating.

I couldn't take it anymore and whipped the brushes out. He's skinny but the wounds on his nose are icky. They look raw and have like blood bubbles just under the skin. His wounds seem to be anywhere a harness rubbed. Left side looks wound free and the ones around his withers and side are naked to the skin. The wound in front of his left ear is another problem. All I can say is ouch. Hopefully the vet will clip around those and we can get a much better look. I wanted to do mane & forelock but the forelock might have to be done when he's sedated. I'm guessing the brow band was several sizes too small.

His hair is patchy like someone took scissors to it in lots of different places and super long in others. The mats go down to the skin. I think the boy is gonna need clipped. This is OK though as I have a blanket fetish and he won't go cold. We'll see what the vet says.

His equine senior mash brought out a very fiesty pony and his heart belongs to Cracklin' Oat Bran. He has made it clear he might do just about anything for a treat.

I'm beat and all my ponies are settled in for the evening. If I see shavings in his mane in the morning I may just cry a little. I'll update after vet visit - and RNB is going to post 'the day after' pics tomorrow evening.

Until I update tomorrow give yourselves a pat on the back and know that you made a difference - you've always made a difference anytime it was need.

To those who offered him a home way before I jumped in thank you. It put him in the forefront and gave him a chance at a new life.
