Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

  • The little feller can come to SC too. I can't stand it. I have several acres fenced, and hay.

I wish I could transport, but I haven't a trailer. I do have two nephews, ages 7 and 5, who would no doubt help me with him. And if they didn't, big deal. I'd take care of him myself.

    • Someone said that they could get him to Pittsburg. Someone else said that they were in Western Maryland. Those two are not that far apart. If the person in Western Maryland could get him further south, could someone from VA meet her say in Frederick, Md or Hagerstown, MD?

      • I think the biggest obstacle at the moment is his coggins. The owner doesn't want to get one and you need it when crossing state lines. If we can get him to another farm in Ohio where we can get his coggins THEN we can get him coming this way.

        • I'd call your vet to check your risk, but this is exactly what Tiny Tim needs! You're an angel!! I have the owner's number handy if anyone needs it via PM.

I'll put something toward his Coggins too, or well, gas or whatever is needed!

If so, and I am guaranteed that transportation and the new home is in place, I could get Tim and have the Coggins drawn here by my vet.

I could also take him south a few hours maximum.

On the last page Paddy's Mom said that she could get him and hold him in OH. Could she be sent the $400 + vet fee and just go buy him? Then she could get the vetting done and send him on to bwf.

I've been following this and it would be wonderful to get him into a good home soon! I would help, but I am trying to scrape together my own funds to get a mare shipped from IN to OR...

            • I absolutely would be willing to do this, but I need assurance that we can get him to his forever home. My non-horsey husband flipped about the two new barn kittens, so a new pony would surely net me some Christmas coal!

So, who can meet me somewhere near Pittsburgh?

                • I sent a PM yesterday to pinkdaisy in regards to this little guy. I've got a farm full of Cushings and IR and oldies and would be more than happy to take him. If someone could pick him up and bring him to Columbus I can take him directly to my equine vet for some immediate bloodwork and give him a lifetime home. I'm in SW Ohio.

I'm not always tactful so me going directly to Wadsworth wouldn't be the best thing.

I'm also worried about the little filly with the crooked nose. What can we do for her?

If it falls through, I still will take him. The home inohio seems an easy thing to do.
We need to get the money asap to Paddy's mom.....and lets go get him.

equinelaundry, please let me know what possible days we can meet.
Also, did you want Tim straight away or did you want me to have my vet see him and do a Coggins first?

                          • Here's my PM to pd. You all read and decide if this would be OK for him or not. He's more than welcome here. If I sound OK to you all who have gone out on such a limb for him with your thoughts & money then Paddy's Mom & I can meet up.

                            Hi pd,

I'm in SW OH and I can take Tim if all else falls through. I wouldn't want to speak with the owner. I can't always promise to be tactful so it probably wouldn't be a good idea but if we can get him off the property and maybe trailered to Columbus I can retire him in Miamisburg, OH.

I've got 2 minis that he can keep company with and maybe he can be my practice pony on learning to harness! He would be retired from cart pulling.

My minis go out for ~2 hours a day on a skimpy pasture and then a mineral supplement 2x day mixed special for my hay. I do feed a bit more hay than I should for my minis but they would just think they were dying if they only got one flake of hay a day like some mini-owners believe. Ummm, they are a bit on the plump side.

I also have a 20 y/o severe IR mare and 16 y/o severe IR + Cushings gelding along with a 28 y/o and a rescue from last year that may be re-homed if the right person comes along....she's a red-headed, younger & spunky mare.

I've got to do all the things for special needs horses and a little guy like him wouldn't be much more trouble. I would wait until end of Feb/Mar to test him for Cushings though just from my own personal experience but, if needed, we could start him on pergolide. Diet and pergolide truly saved my Cushings horse although he doesn't have the coat TT has. He might just need to start w/a fecal and then a worming according to those results. And some good hay and a good brushing!

Anyhoo, thanks so much for all the effort you have put into this. I hope it works out and someone is able to get him to a good home.

                                  • I think it is so great how everyone is so willing to do whatever it takes to save this pony!!!

Just a thought though, if the owner is so against the pony having a health test and coggins, maybe its because he is not healthy, and while I want him to have a wonderful loving home just as much as everyone else here, what if he is sick?? Most of the people who have shown a willingness to take him have other horses, and it would be a shame if one of their other animals got sick because he had some sort of communicable (sp?) disease. I think beyond it being against the law to cross state lines without those tests (there is a reason for that) I think it needs to be done just as a precaution.

I dont know, it was just a thought.

I may have missed something but I felt I needed to ask. Is it that the owner doesn't want a vet on the premises and the coggins pulled even if the buyer is paying for it?

If that is the case this should make the person taking in Tiny Tim VERY WARY as why wouldn't/shouldn't a vet do a Coggins test. Could it maybe potentially not be negative??? Or another issue?

Just wondering and hoping I'm not stepping on toes asking these questions.

                                      • I think that's where the hesitation came in regards to him crossing state lines. Should I get him he'd go immediately to my vet for at least an overnite stay to monitor vitals, fecal, etc. I'd want to know if he's carrying parasites so as to begin a gentle deworming for him and have, at minimum, CBC run. I don't know if pulling for insulin/glucose would be good at that time due to stress but I'd have it done in a couple weeks after he's settled.

I think the main concern is his living conditions and the sad look on his face. Whatever the reason I'm sure whoever gets him will see spark back in those eyes in no time.

Maybe I read it wrong (I've been known to do that), but I read it that they could have one done next week, not at the owners expense, but not in time for trucking this past weekend.

So it was not that the owner refused to have it done, but the timing did not work out and the owner refuses to pay for it.
