Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

  • Fred! Wonderful to hear from you. It's been a while.

Here's my confession: I'm not very internet savvy and the COTH bb was my first attempt at posting anywhere. It took me a while even to figure out how to sign up and do it. I was so naive that it never occurred to me that people didn't post under their own names. And then a year or two passed before I realized that Fred was a woman and that the name actually belonged to her gorgeous stallion.

    • KnowonderWoman! thank you for the Aiden update, and for the update on your life too. You always were a hero to me.

My "Aiden Baby" is a very handsome rising 3 year old, named Amoretto.

And I am very proud of how well our Tiamo is doing, and how handsome he is. His baby sitter pony Miss Ima, who is about 30 yrs old now, is still going strong, babysitting another colt.

I don't post much anymore either. But I am grateful for the friends I've made here, the wonderful people I've met, the opportunity to be part of a community that always stepped up to the plate to try to help, and sharing a lot of laughs and a lot of tears too along the way.

little orphan Maddie, is a big girl now! and Summo Toddler is 10!!!???

Quinn and I were just talking about Robby and that BBQ today. I can't repeat one of Robby's more memorable quotes from that evening though.

LaurieB, I am still not internet savvy and I lurked for ages before I finally had the nerve to join and then ages more passed before I had the nerve to post.
I had an idea that people did not always use their real names (LordHelpus!?), so I picked a name that I thought I could remember - "Lucy" which was the name of my favourite mare.
Taken. So I picked the name of my Lucy's sister, my not-so-favourite mare, Cricket. Taken. I still needed a name that I would be able to remember...so I picked the name of Lucy and Cricket's baby brother, Fred.
It never occurred to me that "Fred" was a man's name, or that people might think I was a man. I confess, I am actually clueless.
Until one day we were posting about cold weather wardrobes and I said something about under the layers of down and polar fleece there was hot pink lacy lingerie.
        Someone then posted: "FRED!!!!!?????"

        • Hi everyone! I hardly ever come over here, but I did tonight and saw this thread. I'm still riding and showing, although I recently took 7 months off to have another kid. I had a daughter, and named her Kate, after Cactus Kate. I was pregnant when I went to watch the World Cup in Vegas this year, but fortunately no one tried to remove me from my seat this time. But I was back riding when she was 6 weeks and showing when she was 9 weeks. I bought a really awesome Trakehner mare in November 2006, who will turn 7 next year, and my trainer rode and showed her while I was pregnant. I was hesitant to buy her because she hadn't done much and was a big spook, but she's turned out to be the most awesome horse I've ever owned. Her name is Lola, and we'll be doing the A/A jumpers next year. My son is 4 now and in pre-school and is such a cute little guy. Cypress is retired after a deep digital flexor tendon tear in 2004 that she never fully recovered from.

Dressager, I vaguely remember you talking about moving out this way. Turns out that you now live probably less than 10 minutes from me. I'm in Agoura Hills.

I just saw the photo the other day from when we all met at The Oaks that time; Akrogirl and Taryn as well. I will make a note to scan it (which I know I said before like a year ago, but you know how blonde I am).

I'll never forget that show; Taryn and I went to what we had been told was our table at the VIP tent and the place card said "Mr and Mrs Rodrigo Pessoa." Which in itself makes it an antique, LOL (well, not that she would laugh of course). We were thrilled that we were going to sit with them. Of course, we'd been given the wrong table number, and that was the day after she'd broken her leg falling off, but for a split second it was too cool!

Sigh. Every one of the BBers we've lost since then was still alive at that point. IIRC, Cactuskate was the first we lost. I still have the ad from COTH in her memory in my tack locker.

So good to "see" you too! Lisa will be tickled with all the Aiden babies that are growing up and doing well--I'll be sure and tell her you all said HI!

The real Fred is as gorgeous as ever--I look at your website a while back after I re-read the thread where my Knowonder mare had to be put down--Fred was going to be her hubby that very next spring and I was going to name to baby First Affair...sigh, it just wasn't meant to be...

But now I have a 18 month old running me ragged so not such a bad trade!

                                    • hey y'all

How lovely to see this reunion. Just caught wind of it, and I'm a bit tired after wading thru 14 pages, but here I am.

Heidi---so nice to hear from you again, good god, sumo boy is 10? I remember him being the terror of, what?, 2 maybe?

Portia? Pin headed dermal wear underwear model here, at your service. Equisearch as Aimee, from like 94? That's how I met Schoolmarm, who is still fine, and we are still in touch. I got an email from Holly (cougar2) the other day as well.

Robbie? Still remember meeting you after all those years at Rolex in the stands watching stadium. Glad you are well.

I rarely come here anymore--the little black horse is pretty much retired, to a life of splendor. He has a spot on his sesamoid, same leg as the old bow you all helped me through during my year of stall rest/handwalking-2002?

My kids are big, one a senior, the other in 9th grade. We had the pleasure of putting some names with faces when we went to DC in 2004--met Wings, Count, Mini and several others. That was the year the husband bailed after 20 years, so life has been interesting on our own. (other than that Mrs. Lincoln, how'd you like the play?)

Life goes on, I like Robbie's thought that the money would be preferable at this stage as well.

I think of Kate often, she grew up here, and every time I see her brother's trucks, I give her a silent nod. Everytime I feel blue, I think of her in her little rocket outfit, with her backpack on, as she rode. Truly inspirational. We've had some damned good people touch our lives on this board, and they will be missed.

And some fun times--I miss Merry and Beezer and the one Invasion we had years ago. Heidi was on that too I think. And the MJ saga. *sigh* Life goes one, eh?

How nice to see and hear from you all.
