Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

Well I feel very proud, myself and my co-workers (We are police officers) went to a call Monday night where a house had been burglarized. The intruders stole ALL the children's X-mas presents, threw the X-mas tree outside and took all the TV's in the house. They have 3 children ages 1,5,7 They do not have a large income-they had put all the gifts on layaway for the last 7 months. The came home after delivering their part time Newspaper route to find this. The children were in tears as well as the parents. Well we collected donations from fellow officers totalling $180. I drove to Wal Mart last night and they were awesome. They let us get a 19" color TV for $55, and all the toys for 50% off. We got the TV, a George Foreman grill (the wife had purchased that originally for her husband as his gift) they gave it to us for $19.99, each child got 5 toys each (really fun stuff and for the baby we got some educational toys as well that were pretty pricey. We are delivering the gifts tonight- I can't wait to see their face- we went by this morning to see if there were any gifts under the tree-and NONE. (The tree was still bent from where they tossed it across the room) So our police Dept. on midnight shift is their Secret Santa-hopefully the kids will remember this and grow up to be respectful citizens. (This is in a community where they dislike the police-project area). Wal Mart is commended for their service- the bill should have been over $400. ( I spent from 1am to 3:30 am shopping and had a ball!)

How cool are you guys! Very, very well done! I wish you could get in there and get photos/video of their faces when they see what their Santas in blue have done for them.

A very Merry Christmas, Happy Chanuka, Kwanzaa, and whatever anyone else celebrates. We've all been good this year and we all deserve it!

Well last night we delivered the gifts...it gets even better. The City Manager and Chief of Police found out what we were doing and many more people bought gifts, including bicycles and gift cards (the children's clothing was also taken). Our Crimebusters van came and picked up all the gifts which appeared to probably amount close to $1000, 20 of us drove our police cars to their house at Midnight and knocked on the door. The father answered in his briefs-so an officer told him he has company and to get dressed. We brought in the gifts, the Newspaper was there as well (The Virginian Pilot). Both parents were in tears and the children were in shock!! The only furniture in their house were 3 folding chairs in the LR.It is to be in the newspaper tomorrow for their Christmas Story. The blue lights were activated on the Crimebusters truck while Christmas Music played over the intercom. It was a sight to be seen, and a memorable moment in my career.

That is awesome! You & your department & everybody involved are wonderful giving people. Honestly, you probably will never have a clue how much this meant to that family.

I hate when people do things at the holidays to others. In Chicago a group had about 200 toys collected to give to children at 3 hospitals & of course it all was stolen! But due to the outpouring of support & compassion, over 2,500 toys have now been collected and 32 MORE hospitals will be given toys in addition to the original 3. So a BIG YEA for all those that open their hearts for others!

Ok, so I've been doubly Grinched... no SS gift AND I got the Flu on Sunday and my temp has not been below 101.4. Monday I had 105.3 and wished I could have crawled from out of this horrible, hot wet skin

Last night my Husband started with the same symptoms I had. And by 10pm my 15 month old was coughing. This afternoon he had a 102.4 temp .

So Christmas at Toby's Moms' house is going to be postponed - indefinately. There will be no family gathering at the in-laws (YEAH!). There will be no 1 hour trip to visit my Dad & then another hour to visit my Mom & Grandmom. Just a family coughing, wheezing, shivering, sweating - well, you get the drift.

Who knows, maybe my SS gift will eventually arrive. Sad to think how much time some of us put into getting really neat things for our giftee, only to be left out. I had heard from my SS that she ordered it, but then it was BO'd, so she would order something else. Not heard anything since. And funny thing is that Periwinkle Blue put us as each other's SS, so I know (by the mail receipt) that my SS got hers. I am sad, really sad - Not to mention SICK.

Well, this is a Christmas to note in my Son's Baby book. Remember 2003 when Mommy got sick, then she gave it to Daddy & you.

            I can't hear you

So, I may be one of the guilty parties. I sent an e-mail to sign up for Secret Santas ages ago. Then I saw a second post about starting over the signup process, and didn't do it the second time. I haven't read any of the Secret Santa posts, because I figured I wasn't doing it. When I got home yesterday, I had an adorable package with a great Secret Santa gift in it, and now I'm worried I was supposed to send one, but I've never gotten an e-mail or anything saying to whom I should have sent it So, if someone will e-mail me and tell me who to send something to, I'd be more than happy to send a gift, although it wouldn't quite make it for xmas. Thanks!

I commend you and your PD as well as your city. I do not know how you stay sane in your line of work you must have a great outlet! I could NEVER do your job I would be a loonie. It takes a special person to do what you do, you must love it. Congrads are in place. I know that must have been a very special moment for you. Walmart went beyond their call of duty, I am sure as you do every day!!! Get some pics posted!! Stay safe out there on the street, you definately have a very dangerous job.

redopp, your Secret Santa just contacted me, and she would like you to know that your package just got returned to her and she feels very bad about it. She got the address from me again and has sent it out - she apologizes for it being late, but wants you to know that it IS on its way!

PerwinkleBlue- after the new year passes can you post the names of the scrooges that stiffed everyone in Secret Santa? Really, I am curious to know who it was. Not that it matters, I guess. I am pretty annoyed with it because I felt horrible that my secert santa gift was shipped on December 5th (late) and I didn't want my person to be upset. Even at that, she still got hers by the 10th! Of course, then I got grinched. Since this is an optional activity, I don't know why people sign up if they aren't going to follow through. My person never even made contact once to tell me that they were working on it. Oh well. I am a grown up and I will get over this. Maybe I am just crabby because I ate too many Christmas treats and didn't get enough sleep.

Fairweather is right. Give it some time, guys - life gets in the way occasionally. I should know - my first SS swap (on a different board) ended with my finally mailing the gift in July of the following year. Now that's bad!

What I would like to do is wait until the first week of January. If presents still haven't arrived by that point, then I want you to email me with your username, real name and money amount you signed up for. At that point, I will start contacting your partners and finding out what's going on.

I AM sorry that your prezzies still haven't arrived and Christmas is over - that really makes me feel bad. But look at it this way - if you do really get grinched, then just take Fairweather and Bumpkin's example to heart. Sign up again next year, and I guarantee you'll get more than one gift to make up for it!

The first week of January, I will start a new thread asking for all grinched COTHers to email me and let me know. Until then, take heart - it might just be in the mail!

When you get the list of grinch-ees, don't forget there are a few of us who offered to step up to the plate and secret santa those who got grinched. I can't spend THAT much money on this, but it's the thought that counts and I'd like to send some inexpensive but NICE gifts to a grinch-ee or two So don't forget us when you re-group after New Year's!

                                        • You guys are great! I hope I won't need your help, but something tells me I will.
