Forum rules and no-advertising policy
As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.
Board Rules
1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.
This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.
Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.
Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.
2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.
3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.
4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.
Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.
Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.
Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:
Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.
Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.
Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.
Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.
Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.
Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.
Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.
5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.
6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.
If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.
Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.
7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.
8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Did they charge your credit card yet? 15 years ago, during a saddle shopping phase, I ordered a test ride saddle from them. They said it wouldn't be available for 30 days, but I said that was fine, to put my name on the list. The next day, I discovered that they ran my credit card for the entire purchase price of the saddle...I was furious and called them immediately. I told them to remove my name from the test saddle and refund my money immediately. I bought my saddle elsewhere. I am still dumbfounded to this day over that.Originally posted by mg View PostI avoid dealing with Dover as well, mostly because I can't stomach paying $14+ for shipping when I'm less than two hours away from their warehouse. However, I've been saddle shopping recently and they're the only one who carries the saddle I'm currently looking to try. I was supposed to receive the test ride saddle the end of last month. I've contacted their customer service twice to ask when the heck they're going to ship the damn thing to me and they keep telling me they're waiting for the other person to send it back. One rep said if they didn't receive it in the next couple days, they'd call the person. With their trial saddles, if you decide you like it and want to purchase it, you can just keep the trial saddle. Since test rides only last THREE days, if the customer didn't call at the end of those three days to inform you of their decision, it's Dover's responsibility to call THEM. Even worse, the saddle is on sale, so I was concerned that when I finally get the test ride saddle, if I do decide to purchase it, the sale will be ended. I contacted CS to find out when the sale ends and all they could tell me was that "the date you order determines whether you receive the sale price or not." Well DUH. Ugh. Never again.
Dover has a great selection and really good deals sometimes, but their expensive and SLOW shipping are reasons I avoid ordering from them at all cost. I don't see them changing any time in the near future either, since they're obviously still getting enough orders.
I stick to SmartPak, VTO, and Adam's.Cindy

Where in the fruitbat do you live that FEDEX!?!?!!! takes 13 days to get to you? I mean, even with "smartpost" or whatever the heck they call it...jeez...!Originally posted by Absolut EquestrianThe order left on the 14th and is scheduled to arrive to you on the 27th, that is with in the normal shipping time frame
DittoOriginally posted by AmastrikeI mostly just use the Dover catalog to find things to buy from other places. The only time I'll buy from Dover is when they've got something on sale for an awesome price, or if it's something I need and absolutely cannot find elsewhere.
No offense Pucky, as I'm sure you're very clean...but LOANER BREECHES?Originally posted by puckythey did send me a very prompt, apologetic email offering to send me a pair of loaner breeches free of charge until the original ones I ordered showed up.
I would be concerned with where they had been and what they had been doing before they got to you lol.

Hee hee! I wondered the same, but when I got them they were new, in the bag with tags, Tuff Riders. I assume loaners = cheap breeches for Dover. We'll see what happens if they ever ask for them back...
OMG - I really really hope that Dover isn't buying Smartpak!

Ruth, smartpak has clearance items in their on line, and about every 3 months at their store.
I live in NH, and although I am a regular smartpak user, I use to frequent the Dover store in Plaistow. Yes, Pinto...I miss the old state line- the old state line.
What gets me about Dover is that if I go to the store, they usually(always) don't have what I wanted that was in the catalog. Then, if I want it, they will ship to their store for free, but not to me. The store is over an hour away, so its not like its around the corner.
I just find ordering from smartpak is easier and their customer service cannot be beat!
I also like Adamshorsesupply too and cheshire horse.
I guess Dover is just too big, and maybe they are not focusing on shipping sales but their storefront. Although, imo, their storefront is minimally stocked.
I can guarantee that when I shop there, I will get only half of what I came for. Its always a disappointment. Last time, I asked the clerk to inquire into their policy of not shipping to you what they carry in their catalog if they don't have it at the store. Did you know, they will only ship to you if its a store item? If its a catalog item, they won't ship it. Now how on earth am I to know whats a store item vs a catalog item? Its not worth the trip.save lives...spay/neuter/geld

1) If SmartPak sells to Dover I will die on the spot!!!
2) I ordered from Dover once, about 2 years ago. Stuff took FOREVER to get here, and shipping was outrageous.
Recently I needed a new helmet and a few other things. I put the exact same items in both my Dover cart and my Smartpak cart. Dover wanted me to pay about $25 to ship the items. Smartpak charged me the standard $6.95. Then I found a free shipping coupon, so it ended up being free. The SmartPak order arrived in like 3 days. Dover would have been 2 weeks.
Why bother? Just order from SmartPak."Look, I'm trying not to test the durability of the arena with my face!" (Because only GM can do that.)

Dover in negotiations to buy SmartPak???? SmartPak, if you're listening, DON'T SELL OUT!!! Please!! That would be absolutely horrifying.
I'm not surprised Dover is chomping at the bit to get SP's business... and that business would stay for a little while... but if SP acted like Dover, that would be a very, very brief honeymoon.

It really drives me CRAZY the way Dover will have the same item with 3 different prices in the same catalog, and you have to put in the catalog number with the lowest price in order to get that price. WTF? An item should have a price, and when you place an order for that item, it should give you the lowest price available for that item.
I mean, that's the way it SHOULD work if you cared AT ALL about your customers.\"I refuse to engage in a battle of wits with someone who is unarmed.\"--Pogo

When I need to order items, I usually pull up all the regulars in different tabs of my browser window, and put everything in my cart and compare at the end. Sometimes Dover wins, most times not. I've only had one horrible shipping experience (hmmm, more than three weeks IIRC).
OT, but I kinda prefer Adams.COTH's official mini-donk enabler

Just a note, I would mention that the NJ store will order and ship the item to YOU free. Thats what I always do-go there when I visit my parents and since they never have anything in stock, I basically place my order there and have the stuff shipped. A lot of times if it stuff like clothing or more expensive purchases, I go to other stores that carry more of a selection (Ricks, Horsemen's outlet, Beval etc) that may be more expensive and buy it there. One thing I dont think you can beat dover for is their $9.99 saddle pads. Love those and wish SP would come up with a comparible one!Originally posted by fivehorses View PostRuth, smartpak has clearance items in their on line, and about every 3 months at their store.

Myhorsefaith, Please tell me that you confirmed that they are actually shipping you the boots and not just the rest of the order because the boots are on backorder? I don't want you to have to wait until the week before your show and find that you need to scramble and get boots somewhere else. Please confirm with Dover that the order will ship complete.Originally posted by myhorsefaith View PostUgh, I feel your pain. 5 days ago I ordered new MH dress boots from Dover, needing them somewhat broken in by June 19.
I called a few hours after i placed the order (which was for 2 breeches, the boots, a hair net) and asked if i could change the shipping to expedite it as i was already getting nervous, living 3000 miles away. the rep told me no, that the order was ready to ship already, so i could not change it. I was happily surprised.
Until I never got the shipping notice email. Not until FRIDAY, 4 days later. And now the merchandise is going to take another week to actually arrive. So i have, if all goes well and they fit, 1 week to break in these boots before my first show of the season.

About a month ago I placed an order to both Smartpak and Dover on the same day...I ordered from Dover about noon on a Saturday afternoon, and Smartpak a few horus later around 3.
My smartpak order arrived Tuesday...BEFORE I even got the conformation from my Dover order!
My Dover order...which was placed a few hours BEFORE the smartpak order arrived the NEXT Monday.
Not to mention the Smartpakl shipping was free and the Dover was like $15 or something stupid.
That blew my mind, blew my mind. If I cant wait to get to the Dover store, then order from Smartpak, period.Never Ride Faster Than Your Guardian Angel Can Fly
