Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

I have a little pouch that loops on a belt for the breeches that do not have pockets, but I am slowly phasing out breeches with no pockets. The only exception is the FITS that I got in white, but I only wear those for dressage show warm up and test, and remove them immediately, since I am incapable of staying clean.

I have a ton of old Elizabeth G breeches and need to take them into sell on consignment because I don't like them anymore (no pockets and I prefer the lower waist on newer ones) but they will.not.wear.out. so selling is the only option. They have a bogus pocket on the inside, which is worthless.

If I have no belt OR pockets, I have a fanny pack that I can use.

I try to have my cell on me for most rides.

I stick mine in my bra between the girls. It's a Motorola Barrage and is just a phone and camera. But it is water dust and shock resistant....the perfect barn phone.

I have several vests and jackets for riding in cooler weather with zippered pockets that I put my cell phone in...in warmer weather I use one of these: http://www.horse.com/item/cell-phone...rap/SLT700209/
I strap it around my leg just below my knee. I've never lost my phone yet. It is easily reached while mounted too. I have a plan that uses sim cards so I can swap out phones fairly easily. I often use my flip phone more while riding since it uses a hard keyboard and my touch screen phone for everyday use. I figure the touch screen won't do me any good if it gets damaged during a fall.

I use itty bitty digital camera cases with a neck strap. They come from wally world and cost at most ten or twelve bucks. Current one has a tiny pocket in front, a bigger center pocket that my smart phone fits in, and a shallow pocket in back. It has a velcro strap so it can be worn on a belt, but I almost never wear belts. There's plenty of room for ID, money, kleenex, horse treats, a little swiss army knife, etc. ( I trail ride, I gotta pack tons of dreck when I go). I wear the neck strap so it crosses diagonally between the girls and adjust the length so the case is under the left arm and boob. Doesnt bounce, isnt all that noticeable, doesnt get snagged when I mount or dismount, easy to open and extract phone with right hand while keeping left hand on the reins. Both my horses are cell phone broke--when they hear it ring they stop so I can answer and wait until I put it back before going on down the trail. There is not a cell phone waistband clip that I would trust as far as I could throw it.

When I have a pair of cargo tights/breeches or one with a pocket I'll use that in cooler weather, but I am a sweat hog and it could always rain and drench the phone. If I know I'm going to be riding in the rain I slip a ziploc bag over the phone--have one always tucked down in one of the handy case's pockets.

I will not go anywhere without my cell phone atm because my DH is at Basic training and I really don't want to miss it if he calls!

....so, since I have a blackberry and there seems to be a shortage of cases that I could use like an armband or clip to my saddle, I made one (it doesn't fit in the little neoprene ones they sell for riders). I actually crotcheted it (ironically the first thing I ever crotcheted ) and made it so it has a flap holding the cell phone in the case and a little belt loop like thing on the back that I can either put an arm band or belt through or, put a carribiner on and clip it to the front dee on my saddle. Clipping it to my saddle has actually worked very well and since I use my phone like a radio too it is nice to have it there. It was very quick and easy to do.

You ought to reconsider keeping the phone ON you, not on the saddle.
If your horse just were to stumble and you come off and are injured, the phone may be out of reach up there, even if the horse was near.

I have a holder that attaches to my boot. I'm ofter alone at the barn, so I'm pretty obsessive about wearing it. My greatest fear is that I will forget to set it to vibrate and freak the heck out of my horse one day.

I would recommend against attaching your cell phone to your horse, and also against wearing it in a fanny pack- know someone who fell on the pack and hurt her back (from falling on the phone) + broke the phone, if she'd been alone she would lain there badly hurt for a long time.
From personal experience, the padded strap-on armband holders they sell for runners seem to work the best. The ankle strap-ons tend to get caught in things like bushes and also seem likely to be a get-hurt-falling-on hazard.

Mine attaches to the top of my boot. I can reach it easily. It's perfect.

When I'm riding my cell phone lives in my bra. I keep it on a very quiet sound (vibrate was NOT a good thing), it's secure, and I figure it has plenty of padding if I fall

I usually just stash mine in my bra (like others have mentioned) though I did manage to lose a phone on a camping trip doing that. I'm still not entirely sure how and I never did find it.

Another bra person. I did not realize that it was such a popular holder! Sometimes I put it in my fleece pocket, but the phone can bounce around. My frog bra is pretty firm. I think my phone ringer surprises me more that my horse, but I don't get many calls on my cell.

I had this same problem! But I work with leather a lot so I have it on hand, so I just made a case that will velcro around my boot. But Now I have a smart phone and I need to make another case that will fit. The ones you buy are just too expensive for me.

I do have my old case if anyone wants it. its not fancy just plain soft black leather with a navy strap. It fits Razor phones and anything smaller. Im not selling it, just giving it to anyone who needs it.

I have tried to tuck it in the waist band of my pants, but here in CA its hot and well the phone doesn't really like sweat on it. I ride a lot in jeans so its usually in my back pocket.

And my iPhone isn't small. I cannot imagine in any way how I would carry my iPhone in my bra in a way that was a) comfortable and b) would not make the phone a wet, sweaty mess when I was finished. Do you people never sweat?!?

I will say I've ridden with my ipod Touch in an armband holder so I can have the music playing (on the little built-in speaker, not with headphones) while we ride.

Another braphone here. Plus if I'm on the tractor, it's the only way I can feel it go off. It definitely can get a little sweaty, ack, but works great. Also, easy with sports bra, not so easy with some others.

I sweat like a man. There's no way I could do that. I'd drown it.

So I use the little holster that someone posted from Horse.com. I don't have a smartphone, but I could totally see how those wouldn't fit. It's probably not the most secure (have had it slide down to my ankle), but it's all I've got.

FWIW, I couldn't carry it in anything other than a uniboob sports bra.
