Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

  • Goats/cell phones..signs or not???UPDATE..3rd sign

My horse is currently boarded approx. 20 miles away (45 min on a good traffic day, over an hour during rush hour) I can only get down there on the weekends, so my mother takes care of him during the week. Free board (my mother is assistant BM) and care, etc. He needs more work than just 2 - 3 times a week.
I found an ideal (so I thought) situation. Barn within 10 minutes of my house, free board in exchange for feeding/turnout mornings Monday-Friday. I went to check the place out yesterday..not bad, quiet, a little more lax/rugged than I'm used to, was 50/50 on whether it would be good.
Sign # 1: THEY HAVE GOATS! I am deathly afraid of goats!! the biggest fear of my life, ever since I was attacked by one when I was younger, and consistently butted whenever I met one since (yeah, please don't make me go into a petting zoo)
ok, maybe can get past that fear (the babies are in a pen) There is a nice big ring, bigger turnout, much quieter place...and it's CLOSER!!
I decide I will try the morning feedings to see if it works with my schedule before I move my horse, I decide to call the assistant BM
Sign #2: HER CELL PHONE IS DISCONNECTED. really? (ok, I let my bill go sometimes and then pay right away when disconnected, so I don't judge) but really..I have no other # to contact anyone there.
So, should I just read the signs that this is not the place..or try to track her down at the barn tomorrow and see if it will work?

45 minutes isn't a bad commute (not in the Washington DC area at least).

10 minutes away is nicer though.

What's the new facility like? Good fences, decent hay and feed, sufficient bedding?

I personally hate a cell phone..I carry one, but I don't like the bloody thing. I have no compulsion to answer it just because it's buzzing and figure they'll leave a message if it's important.

If you don't have a working number to reach someone in management at the barn, I wouldn't board there...I want contact when needed with someone who can make decisions. Does someone live on the property? I boarded with an Amish family once in Souther Maryland...they didn't have a phone either, the horses survived.

I agree with Trakehner. If you like the place and feel your horses will be well cared for, do it. I'm sure someone else has a number.

Are the goats contained? Do you have to deal with the goats at all? I am not discounting your fear at all, we all have something we don't like! Believe me, if they had snakes I would be running the other way.

I agree, try the phone number again or ask for another contact number. If the feeding works for you and it would be helpful for you to have your horse closer, go for it. The one week trial period should give you an idea of the place and help you make a decision.

        Good luck.

45 minute commute on the weekend with not much traffic, and plenty of time available, I can handle, but leaving work at 5:00 just to sit in stop n go traffic for over an hour, and get to the barn when the horses are being fed, just doesn't work (especially when I have kids, hubby, and dog to tend to at home as well)
Fencing was ok, they were painting it and powerwashing the barn when I was there checking it out.
The baby goats are penned, not sure about the other 2 that were across the property. No handling other than dumping some feed in their pen. That I can do, but arriving at the barn at 6:30 am and possibly finding one sleeping near the feed room, or just wandering about - total freak out time for me.
But, taking into consideration the closeness of the barn, I did try to call again and was able to reach a voicemail. So, hopefully I will get a call back and will at least try it out for a week to see how it works out.
Thanks for the input! Oh, and Somermist, you probably would run - to get to some of the turnout you have to walk down a path that is bordered by swamp...they said they have not seen any snakes, but just the thought, ya know.

Sounds like you've mostly made up your mind but I have to say I think I would go for it. More riding, people who seem to care about their facilities, and the only downsides are some goats and a temporarily disconnected cell phone?

As far as the phone goes, I'd ask for a second number in case of emergency but a phone disconnected for a very short time wouldn't worry me. Like you said, it's easy to let go for a day or so, especially if they have a prepaid plan like me (because they have way more minutes for way less money on the same networks). Most likely if they had an emergency, though, there would be another phone they could use to contact you and whoever else. You should probably clarify that to be safe, though.

I love goats so would tell you not to worry, but I have an irrational fear of birds (except chickens for some reason) so I understand. I'd say that's a small price to pay for a few extra rides a week, though. And some goats can be really nice, I promise. Maybe you'll even get over your fear.

Yeah, I know they are mostly harmless. I know they are good for lots of things in the environment, etc. I understand that with my brain. But, the 7 year old in me still remembers having a snake thrown at her. Big brothers can be so mean, and it landed on my head. It did not hurt me, in fact I probably hurt it, but it still freaks me out when I see one. I hope this works out for you. Let us know.

Somermist..I totally feel your pain..I'm the same with goats because of a traumatic goat "attack" when I was little (I was pinned on a porch and the goat chased me back and forth butting me..I couldn't even get a sound out when I tried to scream for my mother). It has seriously scarred me for life. I know, there are some sweet goats, they can be cute, oh the babies are adorable, but to me, all I see is their evil eyes staring at me...seriously, no matter how nice they may be, they must sense my fear and always, always, butt me. Even ask my son, I was forced (while chaperoning a recent field trip to the zoo) to enter the petting zoo full of goats..well, they were all staring at me, and I felt as if at any moment they would all come at me with heads cocked down. I had to book it out of there so fast.
Alas, if I get a call back I will face my fears for the sake of being able to work my boy regularly.

I have goats but they don't have cell phones. I think they'd eat them.

Seriously, though . . . don't take the cell phone thing as a sign of her financial insolvency. I have a pay-as-you-go phone and sometimes we just don't bother buying minutes. I don't use it as a main contact number, but if someone were to get an "out of service" message it wouldn't mean anything terrible.

I DO think it's important to have a solid alternative contact number, so this might be something to talk about ahead of time. See if you can get a home phone #.

As far as the goats go, don't think of it as a sign from Above. Think of it as a test of your goat revulsion. Are they bad enough to ruin an otherwise tempting scenario? Might this even be a chance to work on your phobia and move towards healing?

Good luck with your decision. At least with the drive being just 10 minutes, you can check often and make sure things are going well!

                      Update

So, I got the 3rd and final sign....I called and left a message over a week ago and received a call back the following evening. I said that I would like to try the morning feedings for a week to make sure it worked with my schedule, which she agreed was a great idea. She was going to speak with her partner to see when one of them would be there in the morning to show me what to do, and that she would call me back. Well, over a week later, no call back. That is the last and final sign that this place is not for me. OK, things happen, maybe she lost my #, maybe for some reason they didn't want me to just "try" it out (although free morning feedings for a week, who wouldn't want that), but what if I was just interested in boarding (which was also an option)...too disorganized and flighty for me.
Oh well, I will keep my horse where he is for now and just make the drive...I'll maybe get some books on tape for the drive.
Thanks everyone though, for the input...oh and the goat trauma foundation..oh yeah, that is def for me.
