Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

Thanks for being a part of the COTH forums!

  • AAJumper...thanks for posting all the great pics throughout the event. I know you have mentioned that you have a new baby as well as a hubby out fighting fires and I thank you for taking the time out to share!! I am just awed by the images What a shock it must be for you (and everyone else there) to return to such a parched landscape.

Crossing fingers that it will all be over very soon.

    • What is going on?? I have watched as we went from clear-ish skies to by far the WORST smoke and haze I've seen since this started. When the students went to lunch, you could see the south side of the campus had a weird pink-grey horizon that said fire smoke...now, it's everywhere, and when you look outside, it's almost like a fog as everything has a hazy appearance.

Where is this fire?? I work in Baldwin Park, live in Covina--I've heard rumor about the fire approaching Azusa, but all the news is talking about is Big Bear and Ridgecrest...with so many fires going on, I know it's hard to keep track...but what is happening?

Good night, as I type this with my classroom door open, my *classroom* is starting to smell like smoke. Holy crud...I thought the worst of this was over...

I used to think the world was against me. Now I know better...some of the smaller countries are neutral.

      • The fire is moving towards Stevenson Ranch, near Santa Clarita. It has entered the San Fernando Valley....you're not in the line of the fire, but you are getting smoke (as are we, way out here in the Marina).

        This is so sad.

          • I found this on another site wich might be of help for people trying to locate horses/people..

"Poway Valley Riders Association is trying to set up a lost and found for evacuated horses. As far as I know this will be for the San Diego area. They have just set this up, so there isn't a whole lot of information yet, but for those of you who post on different forums, please pass this website along. It looks like anyone can post information about the horses they are either missing, or are looking for:

            http://www.pvra.com

There is also a link to the polo club which I believe also has information for Del Mar Fairgrounds."

              • Gosh this is just bizarre. We had blue skies and fairly cleanish air, then in a matter of hours, ick.

I took some pictures to give an idea:

The sun at 3 in the afternoon (taken today, 10/28)

This is the street by my house--and that's not fog! Just a mile in this direction is my mare's boarding facility (taken today, 10/28).

A sample of soot and ash collecting on our pavement Sunday, 10/26.

This is my chair by Ana's stall on Sunday. I'd wiped off the ash and soot just a few hours before, and this much had re-accumulated in that short time (Taken Sunday, 10/26).

I used to think the world was against me. Now I know better...some of the smaller countries are neutral.

                • Checking in with a bunch of updates and websites where you can help. My parents live less than a mile from the Encinitas fire, but it's out.

For those of you who are interested, here is a link to satellite images of the fires:

                  activefiremaps.fs.fed.us/
                  Fire Imagery link.

Other link pages to fire stuff.
                  www.fs.fed.us/r5/fire/south/fwx/agency.shtml
                  www.nifc.gov/firemaps.html

Additionally, this has been posted elsewhere, but I note that it isn't here. This is off of a QH List:
"We have spoken with Mark Matson and Margie Allen, who train out of Green Oaks. All is lost there. Margie heard about the fire and rushed to the facility. She was the only one there, so started throwing open stall doors, but the horses were too afraid to leave the stalls. Horses in the pastures were dropping from smoke inhalation. There was nothing she could do. The fire was moving too fast. She barely escaped the barn in time.

Mark and Brenda Brown both had a couple of horses at shows, but Margie doesn't believe any of the horses at the ranch could have survived. She is also sure that the home she and Mark shared is gone as well. This comes on the heels of a particularly hard time for these two. Mark was seriously injured earlier this year and was just getting back to riding. This is just devastating for them.

This news doesn't bode well for Bob Avila and the folks at Tucolotta. They are only separated from Green Oaks by a small dirt lane. Allen and Kay Needles, the owners, just won the Snaffle Bit with Chics Magic Potion. Bobby rode the horse. We know they were able to get some of the horses out, but were prevented from going back in to save the rest. What a tragedy for them."

The Alta Loma Riding Club is in need of donations, please cross post this request.

                  >>For anyone who missed my first post- the Alta Loma Large Animal
                  >>Emergency Response team has been working day and night to save horses
                  >>from the Grand Prix and Old fires since the beginning, often at great
                  >>risk to themselves. The team works under the Rancho Cucamonga Fire
                  >>Dept. Currently there are around 200-250 horses (some got to go home
                  >>today ) being kept at Ingall's park in Norco that owe their lives to
                  >>the quick work of the Team. The Emergency Response Team has spent
                  >>every last penny they have on this rescue effort, and are relying
                  >>heavily on donations and volunteer effort to enable them to keep up
                  >>the same level of response while the fires continue to burn.

For anyone that can help, the address to send donations to is:

                  Alta Loma Riding Club
                  Emergency Response Team
                  P.O. Box 116
                  Alta Loma, CA 91701

Donations are tax deductible (keep your returned check as a receipt) and -all- donations go towards funding the ERT. If you happen to live in the San Berdo/Riverside area and want to bring material goods, then items such as fly spray, extra halters/leads, vetrap or any other horsey supplies that can be used in emergency rescues/housing will be greatly appreciated. You can email me off list for directions at epona97@earthlink.net

If you are in the San Berdo/Riverside area and need to evacuate your animals you'll want to call your local authorities first, but if they are unavailable or not set up to handle large animals then call the Rancho Cucamonga Fire Dept. (Call 411 to get the number - I couldnt chase down anyone who had it memorized) The Fire Dept. will contact the Alta Loma people for you. Most animal control agencies are not aware that the Alta Loma ERT exists or is an option, so don't get depressed if you're told by local authorities that there isn't anyone who can help!

The Team would like to convey their deepest and most sincere appreciation to anyone who can help. (They were like little kids at Xmas when they heard that there were people online willing to help! *g*)

                  And another set:
Donations can be made to the San Diego Red Cross directly from their
                  website:

                  www.sdarc.org/

                  The following is crossposted:

"PLEASE call to give donations - the SPCA, EARS, or the Red Cross.
Last I heard there were 6,000 people in area shelters, not including
those of us who have been staying with the horses, or in trailers,
campers, whatever parked in shopping center parking lots.

If anyone is missing a horse in East County, check the Lakeside Rodeo Grounds, Pillsbury, and the Cajon Speedway."

                  Stable updates:
Scripps-Miramar Saddlebreds - evacuated to ShowPark, starting to move home. All buildings were saved on historic ranch (that must've been some fight because they have a valley on the property that is (was) just full of dry vegetation)

Frank Miller Equestrian (Escondido) - helped S-M evacuate, returned home and evacuated his place. Barn still standing, returning home tomorrow.

Anne Speck - Rancho Del Mar (Valley Center) - exact same as Frank above.

All stables in Rancho Santa Fe, Olivenhain and Bonsall - not affected (as of now)

Cloudchaser Ranch (Hemet) - horses already home.

Robb Wallen (now Temecula, was Simi Valley) - neither place touched. Horses currently at Galway Downs or at show with Robb.

Jannie Giles (Temecula - soon to be Robb's old place in Simi Valley) - not evacuated

Gerry Rushton, Bob Hughes - not evacuated

Greystone - evacuated, don't know about stables

Applewood Farms - currently in process of evacuating

Russ Thompson - evacuated, barn still standing.

No problem. Since I'm not working, I have to figure out something to fill my time when the baby is sleeping and I'm stuck at home! And today's pics were just an excuse to get out to the barn and get out of the house (and satisfy my curiousity as to how bad it got out there). And it doesn't hurt that a nice ride in the truck helps get Mark to take a nice, long nap! But our barn was completely untouched, and my trainer was already back to riding my horse this morning.

Mr.AAJ is working today, but I'm not sure where he is. He could be working on the fire in LA County (the Simi fire, which keeps moving all over the place), or covering a station that is at the fire. Although if he were covering a station, he usually would call me and let me know where he is. So maybe he'll come home tomorrow with some exciting and interesting stories from the fire lines. And he assured me this morning that the fire would be mostly out by the end of the day. HA!

Now I'm concerned about my aunt and uncle, who have a place near Julian, and my cousin who has a place in Julian (in San Diego County). Both have horses, and both live in areas with thick vegetation. My dad tried to call them, and was unable to get through. I saw on the news that Julian was evacuated. I hope they are safe and that their homes are still standing after all of this.

                      • I know that the Santa Clarita area is being primed for evacuation - I just got called and am on standby to help evacuate horses.

                        SHAMELESS PLUG:

I encourage everyone who is in Los Angeles County to get involved with the Equine Reponse Team. They work directly under supervision of the LA county animal care and control department and are part of the SEMS state disaster plan. It consists of volunteers who are horse people and you help out after much training at the sheltering sites or actually loading and evacuating horses from closed areas. Yes, you do have to attend trainings that could be a distance from you - because you have to become approved to a certain level before helping with the animals.. but it is worth it!!

I will get more info if anybody is interested in this volunteer group. I know that the ERT moved over a hundred horses yesterday and were on their way to Santa Clarita area to move more.

                          • And NO you do not have to have a truck or trailer to become part of the team. Believe me, they need just as many people at staging areas, and at the sheltering sites. They of course would appreciate any one who has access to a truck and/or trailer to join - since the team relies on volunteer trailers as well.

But it is definitely not necessary - they only ask that you have some sort of horse experience to handle possibly shocky or frightened horses. I will gather a bit of info on the team as soon as the core group gets a breather and post it here if it is OK.

To give you an idea about how many acres it is in total, as of midafternoon the fire had burned an area approximately 3/4 the size of Rhode Island.

PS And watch the whole polluted air thing as well, fellow So Cal-ers. Everything that burned is now floating around the air and into our lungs. And our horses' lungs. Particles so tiny you could fit ten pieces atop a pinhead with room to spare.

                                    • Regarding the fire currently threatening Stevenson Ranch:

I was keeping an eye on the CHP website...you know, the one they list all the incidents/accidents on.

There was one entry for roads into Stevenson Ranch closed. On that entry was an indication that a "rescue group" with horse trailers pulled up to the officers, asking if there were any horses in the area who needed to be rescued. The officers took the horse trailers in to the area with an escort. I have a feeling these were total strangers (hence the not knowing about horses in the area needing rescue).

God bless those rescue people. The outpouring of love and help just overwhelms me.....

                                      • That's good Adelita. They barely let my trainer go up to our barn (1/4 mile away, if that) to evacuate our horses on Saturday night. The lady that took my horse had to lead her down the street!
