Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

  • Drama over paying board: cash, check, electronic?

Short version of story: I paid board online, which means my bank sent a check to BO. This was 2nd month I had done this. First month was fine, second month BO apparently thought check was junk mail from the bank and threw it out/lost it (note that BO is elderly, great with horsecare, not so great with things not in "her" way of doing things).

First, I have to put stop payment on the check. BO clearly thinks I should pay the penalty fee, as I used a "non-standard, unexpected" way of paying. I thinkthe loss is BO's fault (I sent a check, she lost it), but I would settle for 50-50 split in order to keep the peace.

Second, how do I manage board payments in the future? I HATE mailing checks - in fact, I haven't written ANY checks for several years, other than to various horse people (who just don't seem to be wired). I live 45 minutes from the barn, and it's for a retiree that I don't visit on a regular basis. If I don't get there on the first to drop off a check, then I'm late (which she doesn't charge for, but I don't like to do).

NOTE: I love the barn, love the care, generally love the BO, but this is a pain.

Send a standard check via snail mail? That's pretty standard/old school & should work for her.

Well although it doesn't sound like you go out to the barn that much, dropping off a check directly sounds like the best option if the BO is losing what gets mailed to her...

One of my former boarder's used her billpay for the board check and it was in a standard envelope. Then another tried it for a month, and hers came in a tear-open/perforated format, and I almost lost that one. The 2nd boarder switched back to writing a check.

I loved the bill-pay on the first boarder and had the second one continued, I would have known to watch for it in the new format.

Currently, everyone just leaves their check in a location I know to look in the barn.

I would think that if you make sure she knows what the envelope looks like, it won't happen again. Maybe call her the next couple of times you send a bill-pay check, and tell her to keep her eye open for it.

I'm pretty savvy, but I can completely see myself throwing out the check if I wasn't expecting it. I always warn private people when I'm sending one, and tell them what the return address will be. Never lost one that way.

Drop off a check monthly. If you have a retired horse out there, don't you think it might be a good idea to check on him at least monthly? Especially since on a previous post it seems that at one time he was starved at another retirement facility you had him at.

Or give her a years worth of postdated checks. Then you won't have to be inconvenienced driving 45 min to drop off a check or see your horse.

It seems you really care for the old guy, since you are getting a vet out to check out some teeth issues, so I'm not real sure why getting out there monthly is such a problem. If you are out there on the 20th instead of the 30th, just leave a postdated check.

                Thanks for feedback so far.

Jetsmom, the problem isn't getting out monthly - it's being sure that I can get there somewhere around the first. I drive the other way for work, so some days/weeks it's just more than I can manage. But the idea of a postdated check, even a week or more from the first, is a good one. (BTW, kudos on having such a great memory about my sweet old guy and his issues.)

EponaRoan, I'm trying to avoid snail mail in particular. Because i do literally everything online, I don't even own any stamps, and most Post Offices are my vision of torture even on a good day.

tm, I'd love to do direct transfer, but banks don't seem to like this for person-person (they're fine for big businesses like my electric bill).

What surprised me with this situation was that the first month worked out great, but the SECOND month was (and still is) a huge fiasco. She said nothing the first month, so I really thought it would go smoothly after that.

I guess I'm slowly reconciling to having to use a payment method that is a royal pain for me, to avoid being any inconvenience to the BO. Good thing I like her so much...

I can tell you firsthand that the things really do look like of the the "sign here for $5,000" come ons you get as junk mail....it was two or three of them sent to use as hay payments before we could recognize them...

not that we threw the others away, but we did hold them a few days deciding what to do with them...

I think the year's worth of post dated checks is the way to go - because those things really do look like junk mail and depending on the bank they come in those preperforated envelopes - those ones get torn up by the PO's machinery pretty often and never get anywhere, or if they do they're in those little plastic baggies a week late.
I never could understand the glamor of online banking if they just put a check in the mail for you - it's not any less likely to get lost in the mail and that is what I would be trying to avoid.

It shocks me that you're not already aware of this, since you do most of your stuff online apparently... but if you go to usps.com and have a paypal account... you could purchase postage online. So, as long as you have a printer, and her address... you can print out a label and send the checks from your home/office.

Also, my bank, Wachovia, offers the option of purchasing stamps at certain ATM locations... so if you have one in your region, you might want to look into that option.

I do everything online also... but seriously? Go buy a book of stamps. You will most likely need them again in the near future.

My boarders pay directly to my bank account. It is a farm/business account. I am guessing there are different regulations around consumer accounts than commercial that may influence whether a bank will direct deposit or write a check? post dated sounds good.

I work in a bank. Postdated checks CAN be presented for payment before the date on the check and cashed. If you go that route, make sure the BO knows to hang on to them till you know the funds are available, otherwise you will end up with a screwed up account. (I have had to help out an elderly bank customer who used to write all his checks out for the next two months and promptly send them out, then be horrified when they all started to clear.)

Postdated checks are OK if you trust the person you're giving them to really will hang onto them till the date you've agreed upon.

I'm very sorry and don't mean to be mean or rude or even annoying, but if the BO is "elderly" and is "great with horse care", I really don't see the point of a happy, appreciative boarder with a safe, happy, well cared for older horse taking a bit of care of the BO. In this life time how big a deal is it, truly, to go to the grocery store, buy a box of envelopes and some stamps (my regional chain supermarket sells stamps at the service desk) and then set a reminder on your Outlook or other digital calendar system to write that check and snail mail it.

I would imagine that in your absence from the farm, there are a thousand small acts of kindness and consideration offered to your horse of which you are unaware and for which such a small gesture of kindness on your part might be counted as some slim repayment in kind.

                            Sorry if I've offended.

                              HoundsRUs, thank you.
I am in a similar situation, only I am the BO. The owner only comes out a few times a month to see her horse, if that.
He is 32, has cushings and needs lots of special/extra care and consideration.
She does buy her own feed, she has an account at the feed store and I pick it up.
I give the old guy baths without being asked, he gets extra grooming, extra blanketing since he can't warm himself, all sorts of little extras. We BO's are out there 7 days a week, at least twice a day often more, in all weather, when we are sick and when we are well, feeding, blanketing and caring for the horses.
I don't mind doing it for the old guy, old horses deserve a little special treatment.
But believe me when I tell you that if she were not always on time and usually early with her board without being asked I would have kicked her and her horse out a long time ago. Wanting the board on time is not asking too much.
The light company and the feed man don't want to hear that work is in the opposite direction and I'll get to it when I can.

I have to agree with houndsRus, and lord knows I LOATHE mailing paper cheques. (I do use them to pay for board, but I'm out 2-3 times/week right now and hopefully more in the summer.) Right now I do all my bills via either my Schwab account or my credit union, including my mortgage. But my old apartment, I had to mail my rent checks. So I did. Since I had an awesome landlord who would do things like 'fix' a leaky showerhead by putting in a brand-new hand-held fixture, or replace the coin-op dryer in the building (and leave me a roll of quarters to apologize for my having to dry loads multiple times) I figured mailing checks was only a minor hassle.

May be you can't do this in the US, but here, I can go online to my bank account and set up anyone to pay directly into their account. I can then transfer any amount of money into their account whenever I want. I could also do a "direct credit" where the bank transfers a set amount of money directly into the other person's account on a set day each month.

A year's worth of post-dated checks is a really, really BAD idea under the best of circumstances. And it's even worse with a BO who isn't quite the sharpest knife in the drawer. If BO has a brain fart and deposits them all at once, you are SOL.Post dated means nothing to the bank.

You really have to warn people about the e-checks--they look like junkmail or credit card offers. People toss ours all the time.

That said, cancelling an online check should not cost you anything.

She didn't say the BO was senile.

I have 2 renters that give me a yrs/6 mo worth of post dated checks for their rent. Never had any problems.
I might not do it at a new barn where I didn't know what the care was like, but if I've had a horse somewhere for a while, and felt they were trustworthy, then it wouldn't bother me. But if I had a horse that was getting good enough care that I could comfortably go a month without seeing him, then I think I would trust the BO to not cash checks when they weren't supposed to. At worst you put a stop pmt on the checks and you are out 20.00 or so per ck, if the BO won't return them. If it was that horrible of a situation, then the stop pmt fee would be the least of my problems.
