Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

    Who did you get, Jodiel?

About the barn: it's a private facility in Parker. It's owned by a friend of mine and less than a year old. Absolutly awesome place.

      • Simkie, your posts are so bittersweet. Sincere condolences on the loss of your mother.

But there is happiness in knowing that you and Blush have found each other.

I heard a song on the radio today (forgive me if I don't quite get it right): Warren Zevon, "Keep me in your heart for a while...". I thought of you and all my friends who have had losses of dear ones over the years. In another way, we keep you in our hearts, too.

Post pics when your newbie gets home - we want to see!

Simkie, I am sorry to hear about your mother's passing. At least you did get to have time with her, and say those things that should have been said long ago. I think Blushing Maiden will carry a piece of your mom with her. That is usually the way things work... and she is one good looking mare! Good luck with her, keep us posted with her progress!

Blush is gorgeous, Not to mention she has basically the exact same markings as my TB mare.....maybe I'm just biased?

            • Simkie thank you for posting the pictures. She is lovely. It looks like she did well trailering all that way. That is a good thing since she will have a long trailer ride to get to my house if I can convince you to give her to me .

I've gone in to look at Canter horses at Suffolk, and we have donated to help their foster program. They are wonderful people. Sending Blush hugs from my gang!

                      Hey guys

Blush is so much fun. She's so sweet and sensible and lovely. I'm leaving my saddles at home right now, because I know if they're at the barn I'll just *have* to see if they fit her. And then I'll just want to sit on her...and we all know where that would go I *at least* have to get her feet taken care of before I ask her to do anything but chill out in her stall!

AND--she picked up her right foot from the right side today! Big praise for that--she really didn't know if it would be okay. She's a good girl.

Life outside of the barn is still rough. It wouldn't be that big a deal--just a lot of things to do--but the vast majority of my family members are idiots. My godfather is so angry about losing my mom that he's taking it all out on me. He's gone so far as to say he won't be attending the memorial service because *I* will be there. Sigh. He's acting like a 10 year old, and he's 50 something. This is the guy that was supposed to be helping me through this, and he's telling me he hates me. Ah well. I certainly can't control his actions, and I'm sure he'll realize what a jerk he is eventually...

                      • Oh Simkie- I'm so sorry an adult is dealing with his grief in such a selfish way. ((((Hugs))) About all you can say to someone behaving like that as they are having hissy fits is "I'm sorry that you feel that way."

How are YOU doing?? 10 years ago my own Mother passed away from cancer after being in treatment for 3 years. The remissions became shorter and shorter.....I was warned by a counselor friend that even though we knew "it" was coming, when it did happen the sharpeness of the loss would sting. It did. Yes, we had comfort knowing her physical pain no longer hurt or confined her and that her soul was with God but we missed her madly. I hope you have a girlfriend or guyfriend you can lean on during the upcoming times when the stings hurt. I know Blush will be there for you.

Hang in there and know that so many of us are sending daily hugs over our plastic keyboards to you during what is an expected, be it painful, part of life. (((Hugs)))

And if nothing else, please remember this.......I had dibs on Blush LONG before RockinHorse's post on this page!!!

                          Hey SLW,

I'm doing alright. I think that the fact I'm INSANELY busy helps. Meeting with the lawyers, the accountants, putting together the memorial servie, notifying the life insurance people...I have a lot to do. I think when this is all over, I'll crawl into bed for a little while.

It's just not getting any better, though. Last night I got a call that my old gelding was really lame. I saw him today, and he told me that he'd had enough. So I'm going to call my vet in Fort Collins and see if he can come down here to put Springer down. My poor old man...I should have done this when he was still in Fort Collins. I really knew he wouldn't get through the winter, but I just didn't have time to make a decision. I brought him with the others, and I shouldn't have. I should have known better and euthanized him at his barn up there.

                                • Dang Simkie- I hope you have a big, fancy down comforter to crawl under this weekend after you've had a sip(s) of Crown Royal.

Hope you and your vet can get together regarding your gelding and move forward. It's always a tough day when you say "God Speed" to something you love but when infirmity or illness are present it's a blessing for the critter to let it go.

Yesterday at work a gentlman in his 60's brought in a 19 year old mare to be examined. The mare hasn't been ridden in a year yet she had 4 perfectly shod hooves because of past founder issues. He had owned the mares mother until her death at age 25 and of course has owned the 19 year old all her life. So these two horses bridge 35 years or nearly half his life. The news on the 19 year old mare is guarded and thus the question on euthanasia cost came up. Her prefectly cared for hooves confirmed materially what this man feels emotionally for his butterball Quarter horse mare. I gave "Chigger" the royal spa treatment for her overnight stay. She returns home this afternoon and next weeks lab results will determine the outcome. I am keeping my fingers crossed for her that it's one thing and not the other as the owner has said if it's the latter he would have to let her go. For all the jackass people who end up owning and not taking care of their horses, there are always owner like you and the above client who do right by their steeds. Those are indeed the blessed horses.

Hope the rest of the day goes well for you as you make and have the offical calls returned. Here's a headsup- my Mother passed away at the end of October. That first holiday season was kinda tough and, as you face, there's not much of a lull between the memorial service and the Christmas music in the malls. I had holes in my lips from biting them as I "shopped" and I spent some extra time in Dillards Department stores dressing rooms getting "composed". It was all normal- the timing just sucked.

Again, hugs to you as you close in on Blush's first week anniversary with you!!!

Lamb, I think you have the right idea. I like the way you think

SLW, what a sweet story. There's a man at my barn up in Fort Collins like that. He's got to be in his 70's. He also has a old mare that he bred, and he owned her momma. I think I'll be one of those people when I get old, too.

I know the holidays are going to be rough. Right now, I can't even IMAGINE shopping for Christmas...and it's coming up SO fast. I have a ton of invites for thanksgiving, and I just want to snuggle into a big down comforter with my dog...lol.

Blush is getting new shoes today! Her first farrier visit with me. Her feet are SO long--I swear it's been 10-12 weeks since they did her. I can't wait till her feet look good. I think she'll feel better.

I can't BELIEVE it's been less that a week since she came and mom left. I have absolutly no sense of time right now.

Blush did well for the farrier. She was a little OMG with her new angles and shoes, but was walking well after 5-6 steps. We didn't change her THAT much, but I think she's a sensitive soul

I'm leaving my tack at home until I know there will be someone at the barn. If I have a saddle out there, then I'll want to sit on her...and I think that's a bad idea if I'm totally alone. Soon, though!
