Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

  • What other hobbies do you have?

I realize we're all a little, uh, horse crazy here, but I do know others have various other hobbies too. I'm curious - are they related to horses in some way, or totally separate? What are they?

About the only thing that I "do" other than ride is I love to make cards & do rubber stamping. Of course, I love horse themed stamps the most, and lots of my cards have horse themes on them.

I've also been known to do a bit of sewing, although not for my horse since I was a kid and made some WP and SS show clothes. I also love to bake.

    reading riting rythmatic...

    ahahaha, kidding.

Crochet, knitting, sewing, drawing, painting, sculpting

    cooking, baking

    reading, writing - no rythmatic

And at the moment gaming has taken over a bit:

Pokemon - passion of my son and I am a happy enabler there
and some MMRPG - with many nerds on the net...(World of Warcraft)

I have lots of hobbies, none of which are horse-related. I am learning to play the guitar, I ride my bike out on the bike trails and walking paths, I run, I hike, I do a lot of photography when the weather is nice, and I do volunteer work when I find something that interests me. I used to do a lot of animal rescue but I got out of that because the rescue people I dealt with on a regular basis were horrible and some were hoarders. I love to cook so I'm always experimenting in the kitchen with recipes and stuff. Just got a wok the other day so I can make some kick-ass stir-fry. I love me some stir-fry. Yummy!
Thus do we growl that our big toes have, at this moment, been thrown up from below!

Hunter Mom, I also make cards, where do you purchase your horse themed stamps? We need to take this to PM'ing, it could get lengthy talking cards.

My second love is cooking. Working in the kitchen with my apron on and a cookbook on the counter is like walking into the barn . . . smiles galore.

This winter discovered how much I love to walk my dog in the snow, it is especially fun when it is snowing. There is something about the quietness of snowfall and watching your dog play in it . . . is so relaxing.

I knit. I quilt (though it's been a while). We have a nice, fairly low maintenance garden with lots of berry plants that I baby like they are children, and we reap the rewards on the summer days when there's a GALLON of berries. I do the basic design/planting/weeding of the vegetable garden and my husband does the watering. Nothing like a fresh cucumber or some snap peas picked and eaten right off the plant.

I also, um, raise pet rats. Long story there, and I've cut back a bit, but seriously, they are fun little critters.

And I spend too much time on the internet

My other hobby is making money to pay for this one.
I tolerate all kinds of animal idiosyncrasies.

Full-time job, part-time school, barn... Not much time left! My fiance and I try to get out on the Harley as often as possible, take the Duster to car shows, be his cheerleader at the drag races, and take pictures at his baseball games. He has more hobbies than I do!!!

Well, I am *trying* for a somewhat horse related hobby: Growing a veggie garden. Which makes some use of the some of the manure produced here.

However...I have a black thumb. Last year's attempt included over a dozen different veggies planted and worried over. It yielded 36 radish, just enough green beans for one dinner for 3 people and one honking huge perfectly round cucumber.
That's it. Have *no* idea what happened to the rest of the stuff I planted. I'm going with alien abduction.
(still trying to figure out why my one cucumber looked exactly like a green basketball...about the same size too)

There's stuff I've always wanted to try...or have time for...and never seem to get around to doing it. I'd love to learn to play the guitar like Lex, but I have zero musical talent.
I'd like to learn how to really sew...hoping to learn that someday soon. That would come in handy. I can crochet...I think I still know how to. Haven't in ages.

I do cook and bake like a fiend...I adore cooking and baking. I'm a stronger cook than baker though. (probably because I personally am not a fan of sweets)

I have a list of things I like to do but the truth is, I think the only other two hobbies I have time and money for are sleeping and driving.
A good horseman doesn't have to tell anyone...the horse already knows.

Might be a reason, never an excuse...

My interests and the things I enjoy in my off-time are seen as huge wastes of time by many women around here. That is why I've been looking elsewhere.

I have/had many hobbies but as time goes on , have less time to do them.

However, I am a flautist and continue to play and do get to quite often at mass, special ocassions, memorials, weddings etc, (and I even get paid for some of it too!)

I love to read, especially sci-fi/fantasy. Do read the best sellers since my mom gets them, and gives them to me when she's done..and janet evanovich when i need a quick funny read.

I love sketching and painting, not much time lately for that. i think when friends and family had me making various paintings and things for their houses, it ended up not being so fun anymore.

Gaming..but intentionally do not own a much desired xbox to keep me from gaming or I'll never get any sleep.

Love watching old movies...next on the list..sci-fi movies too.

Travelling. if not out of the country, then places of historic value..and Museums, love museums.
I love my OTTB! I get my dressage test done faster!

I have four Dobermans and compete in AKC and UKC obedience trials with them...on the weekends I don't have a horse show, or am going up to the show barn for the weekend to practice!

I knit, though not as much as I used to. I love to cook and bake, even though I'm a relatively picky eater. I'll make some really fancy stuff for DH and friends and then fix something simpler for myself! Baking is my "thing"....pies and tarts most often. Used to scrapbook, but it's not the best "portable" type hobby so that's really fallen by the wayside. I travel for work since I switched careers two years ago and that eats a lot of time.

The travel I love that's not related to the horses, or seeing the World Cup, is a sailing vacation every other year with my mom, her SO, and DH. We charter a sailboat (bareboat - no crew other than ourselves) and off we go for a week or two. It's fabulous....so relaxing and fun The last two years we went to the BVI. Nothing like a steady daily stream of Painkillers to unwind! Mom's SO is applying for his captain's license so that when they retire to their own sailboat down there, he can work PT as a charter captain to bring in money. I'm thinking them having their own boat down there will mean a trip EVERY year!

Kayaking is a lot of fun Lex! I used to kayak a bit, but now having two totally spent shoulders means my paddling kinda sucks. And hurts.
But it's relaxing and you see all sorts of wildlife because you aren't making any noise.
Learn to roll it though...getting stuck upside isn't fun and if the river is low your head bonks around on the bottom.
Scuba...have no clue. There's sharks in the water, I'm not trying that. My brother scubas though and loves it. Funny part is now he cleans his pool in his scuba gear...looks a little odd.

Cycling-- Specifically road cycling. I originally got into it as it uses the same muscles as riding, so I was planning to do it as just another way to keep fit for the horse stuff, but it has become something I'm really serious about as well. I actually hope to start racing in the next year or so maybe get into doing time trials later on.

I love photography as well (equine, and other outdoor type things).

Hiking is something I want to start doing more of. I really enjoy rollerblading and I think it'd be awesome to get into speed skating.

..I enjoy baking. Reading. I spend too much time on the computer..
