Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

exercise always worked in combination w/ bc and midol. unfortunately i have had to come off of bc to rule out why the heck i've gotten erythema nodosum, so i'm loathing the coming months. but honestly, the illness i have now is every day, so i'll do this little test!

wonder if you can put the sticky portable heating pads (thermacare?) back heading pads on the abdomen? it might look funny...but heck, if it makes you comfortable...

For those who worry about leakage during riding. The instead cup aka menstrual cup is your friend if you can get over the insertion process.

i agree too riding is one of the best cramp killers for me. i used to get awful cramps, like roll around on the floor screaming and crying cramps. going out and riding just does something for them...relaxes the muscles, maybe? you should get on BC too, even if you don't "need" it, bc it should help as well.

I agree - not to alarm you, OP, but such serious cramps could be a sign of the above.

I read about the Diva cups on COTH awhile back when they were being discussed and ordered one.

Believe it or not, they are great. It was amazing how long you can go before a visit to the bathroom. Almost all day on a normal day.

If you are not a fan of having an adhesive pad (they do have a smell to them and I get very sensitive to smells sometimes), Back on Track makes boxer shorts that cover your abdomin and back braces with a wide front. If you can't find them locally PM me, I sell them

I also second the Instead Cups! My regular job is not your average girl job. I work away from any usable bathroom for almost a full day sometimes doing intensive labour work. Regular options don't really work for me...these things were the greatest invention ever!! I don't have to worry about anything other than finding a bathroom to actually pee

Not to hijack the thread, but is there any type of painkiller that you can get OTC that doesn't involve swallowing a pill? I have issues with pill swallowing- I've been trying for years and still can't manage it. So when I get cramps, I just have to suffer because I can't take Advil or anything. Not fun, especially on days I have to ride.

I can't swallow pills either. I take either children's NSAID - motrin, tylenol, aspirin - if the pain isn't bad. Or Tylenol makes an adult liquid. I have so many different ones on hand that I forget who makes what but I know some of these NSAIDs also come as those quick dissolve things or quick dissolve tablets in adult strengths. These forms are also internalized faster than pills (some get absorbed through gums into the blood stream), so the pain goes away quicker.

I don't know if you've ever tried this or not but if you haven't, it's worth a try. Put the water in your mouth first, then toss the pills in and swallow right away. You can practice with M&M's. If you miss you just get some watery chocolate.

I can swallow any pill that way, regardless of size, shape, or texture. Even the great big "horse pill" type.

When I was working in the hospital I taught that trick to quite a few of my patients.

Or grind them up (if that's not contraindicated) and put them in applesauce or pudding. Kind of gross but it beats being in pain.

I had this same problem. I've always struggled with taking pills, and the way I solved it was by starting with baby aspirin and cutting it into 1/4ths. You can't get much smaller than that! I gradually went to half a pill, then whole baby aspirins to regular Advil tablets. Definitely take a swig of water first, and then pop the pill in and swallow without taking a second to even think about it. It's purely psychological, but it can be really hard to get past. I still sometimes have problems, and randomly will end up gagging on a pill, but after spending a long time working my way up in size from baby aspirin quarters, things are much better. Plus having to take a daily thyroid pill, I don't really have a choice about it- practice definitely does help. I definitely do still have to really think about relaxing before I take a monster pill- those are still really hard. Just keep reminding yourself that you swallow much larger pieces of food every time you eat, and relax your jaw and throat before popping a pill.

I've tried the water thing- It won't work for me. I know it's all in my head, but that's kind of the problem... when worst comes to worst I'll eat it in a big spoonful of peanut butter. Thanks though!

Also, in case you haven't already figured this out, tampons can make the cramps worse. Don't ask me why, but apparently it's not just me because my gynocologist mentioned it to me. (I'd already figured it out on my own)

I think it's because of the chemicals in the tampon (bleach and such). You can get bad cramps with pads too, for the same reason, but tampon cramps are considerably worse. Another reason cramps can be really bad on tampons is because that particular area shouldn't be "plugged up," it's designed specifically to allow cleansing. I saw it on a thing they showed on TV a few years ago, about when tampons came out in the 70s (some doctor was absolutely insistent that tampons were a crime against nature, lol). I thought it was interesting, but most importantly, it gives me an excuse to not even try tampons, lol (though, I actually have tried them a few times; I must be inserting it wrong (even though I feel I'm going as far in as I can, bleh), because I just can't get comfortable when they're in there. Feels like they're trying to come out).

I saw this earlier in the thread, but I'll add that a couple years ago, somebody on another forum suggested taking magnesium (I think that's it, started with an M) a week before your period, and cramps will be MUCH lessened. I keep meaning to try it, but I never remember, or get around to, getting some magnesium. In any case, any regular pain killer taken the day the period starts helps ward off pain. Aleve helps the most, I'm finding these days, but anything will work. If I take it before I feel any pain, then I can keep the dose of the painkiller at a minimum for the next week. However, if I get lazy and I wait to take a painkiller after the pain is starting to hit full force, then I feel like I'm struggling to stay on top of the pain for the next few days.

Also, if you tend to be a "puker" during your period, you could be getting low in iron. I'm a vegetarian and if I'm getting a bit anemic during "that time", I make a new friend with the toilet. I also get more sensitive to smells. So when my period is almost ready to arrive, I start taking iron or B12 if I've been slacking off over the past month. It sucks when you're rolling around in bed, curled up in pain, all but whimpering, when your belly starts rolling and curling and you have to dash, doubled over, to the nearest sink or toilet.
Some people are like slinkies...not really good for anything, but you still can't help but smile when you see one tumble down the stairs.
