Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Oh, and I'm not Ishi but my mare is actually MUCH better to the right than to the left. She is soft and more balanced to the right; to the left she wants to lean in like craaaaaazy

My other two didn't have much of any issue either way but they had a little time down before I got them.

A slight tendon "problem" is a good risk in an OTTB prospect. This mare looks like she is worth the money to me. I have done many with bows, some large, some small, some new and fresh, others already set. Never had one that didn't work out as a sound horse in a non-racing discipline. A bow is the kiss of death to a racehorse. Like being "a little bit pregnant", a bow will only get worse with further racing (in most cases). But give it some time to heal and rehab, and go into a different discipline (especially one that gets the hind end taking more of the weight due to rebalancing the horse), and no problems for a bow. This mare in this pic will carry herself the way you want for a riding horse, she's built for it. Buy her.

Fair enough. Good thing she's not on the East Coast. I heart her. I could almost sneak her by MY hubby by sending her straight to EqT's.

(Almost, though I am afraid he'd catch on eventually.... and then I'd probably be divorced, LOL. Or else I'd have to buy him another big screen TV which was my bargaining chip last time I brought a horse home....)

            Thoughts?

Also- I'm not sure i'd be able to find time in the near future to go look at her (I'm in OH not PA). How bad of an idea would it be to purchase based on just conversations w/ trainer and PPE results? If you've done this in the past how did it work out for you?

              bluefish,

I know of horses who have gone to new homes, sight unseen, with NO ppe, and things worked out fine. And other horses who were viewed multiple times and had a ppe and then something else surfaced later.

It's all a risk, which is true of any horse buying, really But I'm pretty sure Ishi saw that mare in person, so maybe if you PM her she can tell you what she thought, if it helps

bluefish, I did see her at Penn, I sent you a PM. Her trainer was very nice as well. I saw a lot of horses that day, took notes, but it would be best to talk to the trainer just in case I got anything mixed up in my notes. Haleigh was gorgeous and very sweet!

I should have checked this thread earlier!

I've galloped at a few farms where we both jogged and galloped to the right, but worked/breezed left. At the track we gallop and work to the left, jog to the right. The average ride on one galloping a mile for the trainer I last worked for on the track was this: Walk to the track (this is the second hardest part of galloping), come up the chute, pick up a jog, trot off to the left. Pick up a nice canter on the right lead, ease on into a nice gallop and go. Coming into the turns you swap to the left lead, out of the turn back onto the right lead. Come back down to the trot, walk, turn to face the inside rail, walk off the track. Then walk on back to the barn~This was the single toughest part of galloping on some horses Also, on bay weather days or for babies, or whatever we jogged inside the shed row, both directions. When I shed row, I usually work a lot on bending both in the body and try to encourage either long and low or coming onto the bit, depending on how much energy I have and the horse I'm on.

What they know can vary greatly at the track. The nicest ones for me know what your leg is (we don't ride way up short day to day like they do in the races, plus babies need leg to keep them going at times), they have a nice mouth (they will lean on you, it's not a show/dressage horse mouth, but it's not a locked iron jaw from hell either), they go forward (funny thought about TBs on the track, but it's true) and my favorites aren't spooky. They can be feeling wicked good, throw in a few happy bucks, that's fine with me, but the ones who truly believe the half pole will eat them everyday, or the ones who jump the shadows on the track just make me nervous. I've been a quite a few that barely could steer to get to the track (not talking about babies), that had no idea about anything, these aren't fun!

So that's why I always tell people to start with an OTTB like it's an unbroke baby. You might have one that knows a ton or one that knows squat. If you do get one that has had great riding/training that will make it easier in transition, then to me, that's just icing on the cake.

I love OTTBs, can you tell?! I am excited for you, I can't wait to hear who you bring home.

Hmm, I thought I posted here about ten minutes ago??

To all of you who are drooling over Perfectly Blended... I bought her Saturday morning! Not only is she gorgous, but she has the personality of a Golden Retriever! I go pick her up Tuesday... oh and to make you extra jealous I got her for HALF the asking price! I was ready to pay the full price, but the trainer (who had owned her since she was a yearling) said, "Nah, I'll take 250" I darn near fainted! Couldn't whip out the cash fast enough! Tomorrow I'm calling my vet to make an appointment to ultrasound the tendon. I'm so excited!!!

fourmares, I guess you'll have to change your name to fivemares!!!! Congratulations on getting her - she's just gorgeous. You will of course have to let us know how she works out!

My search is on hold while I deal with some health problems with my dog, Pico. Looks like lymphoma and we need to consult with the vet tomorrow on our options.

My friend wanted to go see Run Royal Rain this weekend but we ran out of time...maybe she'd go look at him for me?

                          ACK!!!

Too Tunes General is sold. I talked to his trainer today when I was on the way to pick up my mare... he didn't know that the horse was on the Canter site! He said that he had another nicer horse, but that one has a cracked sesmoid. Also the trainer that had Perfectly Blended (man, does she need a barn name...) has a horse with a small chip in his knee. He's 6 and has won over 90K... seemed like a nice boy, pretty head... and one of his pony riders, who is a woman, tried really hard to get me to take a cute bay horse, who was a race horse and is now being used as a pony horse.

As for PB... well when we got there she was on the hot walker. Someone ran down the barn aisle and the mare went ape shit on there... leaping, rearing, firing out... Oh joy...No one so much as looked up... My friend that came with me says, "Maybe we should ask them to drug her.", I say, "She'll be fine."... we go find the groom and she tells him the mare is having a hissy... he says, "Ya, she's happy!" He got her off the walker and we wrapped her. She loaded fine, rode like a champ, got to her stall without incident, and was fine for about an hour... and then she played in the puddle in her run and rolled in it and lost her little mind... it seemed like it was starting to rejoin her body about the time that I fed dinner. In the mean time she paced herself into a sweat, reared, bucked, kicked and generally acted like a major loon. My trainer had me make some strong herb tea for her. (I'm hoping that this is a result of the enormous amount of oats in her poop... I mean her poop was like 50% grain!!!)

I got my OTTB 1 month gelded and 5 days after his last race.....got on him his 2nd day home, and we pretty much worked 3-5 days a week for a year with no down time. Then he put his leg through a fence and had a year off to heal. I think that year off was really good for him, but i'm glad I had put the training on him before hand, as he was easy peasy to start back into work :-)

Sidenote - I had never been to the canter website before today....what a horribly wonderfully dangerous place :-D

Fortunately the mare's brain seems to have arrived here during the night. She was a peach today. She loves rolling in her puddle. This afternoon her wrap was soaked all the way through with muddy water... I considered Petunia as a barn name (Porky pig's girl friend), and Peachs (a pig from a series of novels), but neither one stuck.
