Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Was it just me, or are there any other Wellington-savvy BBers who get hopelessly and completely lost with no sense of direction whatsoever down there?

Maybe it was just because in my time spent there my work hours were generally 3:00 am to 8:00 pm and I was never used to driving around off the showgrounds during daylight! Plus all the houses looked the same?

A possible defense for the stolen furniture charges? "Your honor, every house and subdivision in Wellington looks alike and so I thought I was in my own home moving my own furniture!"

On the criminally insane front: a fellow boarder at my barn is a psychiatrist who works with the criminally insane, and we were discussing this very subject a few weeks back. Under the law getting a Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity is extremely difficult.

Bipolar or not, even during a manic period it would be difficult to convince a jury that you didn't know what you were doing when you spray-painted the horse's legs in an effort to conceal that he was stolen. Premeditated, anyone?

I get turned around sometimes..... especially driving at night. And I have been here for years.

My street in Saddle Trail goes in a big circle, crossing Greenbrier twice... the repairmen have a fit and complain all the time about finding it.

BTW, I can walk out my front door and see the barn from which San Diego was stolen. Beats me how anyone would have the guts to just walk off with that horse..... we are pretty close together here.... not on vast numbers of acres. My house and lot is 5 acres, my neighbors is 2.5, and a lot of the lots are the same sizes, more or less. Just a few are bigger. But all in all, it is not exactly like being out on the prairie.

And there is traffic here, even in the night.... not much, but enough that I would think it would discourage a horse thief.

I want to know who the person is who had the stolen merchandise in his or her house on Bedford Mews. I'm nosy. Has that been in any of the articles?

        VERY true!

GoodyFourShoes, I've been told (by a knowledgeable person) that sexual abuse is often a contributing factor to bi-polar disorder. True or false, I'm not sure...but definitely something to research for your paper!

I do think this woman knew what she was doing. That part of the story is appalling. I also think she is suffering from some form of mental defect. THAT part is just plain sad. The reason for my other post was to point out the sad part, because it's something we need to keep in mind when discussing this individual.

I feel sorry for her. At the same time, I agree that some of the things she did ARE pretty amusing. I, for one, will think of this story every time I see a can of RustOleum.

Bi polar is the result of a chemical imbalance...sexual abuse in one's past will not change brain chemisty. She could however be bipolar but my clinical sense is that she isn't. She had this too planned and it happened over time....biploar's are impulsive and not careful while manic....she is smart and careful. Boldness discribes her well I think. My gut says she is personality disordered and I am going to make the call that Psy asssessment labels her antisocial personality disorder. They may determine she is a borderline personality disorder however....that fits with the screaming episodes that have been mentioned....she has some feelings and emotions I think, which would rule out antisocial (they are the cold hearted murderers...limited ability to feel) .....trying not to get too clinical here but the third diagnosis might be narrisitic personality disorder.
Regardless I don't think she is truely mentally ill and knew what she was doing. She was fulfilling some personal need. These disorders do have a link to sexual abuse or neglect while young and the interesting thing is the individual will get some brain changes.
Enough.....besides and outside all that I find Cathy's story to be very interesting and I just can't get enough details

            Getting back on topic

The latest from the Palm Beach Post: PBP: 3/7/03 "... pleads not guilty in furniture case"

I wonder about one of the charges she is facing. Per the article she is charged with "artificially coloring an animal". Seriously, that is a law on the books in Florida? Certainly it applies and I'm glad it can be applied but I wonder what the genesis of that law is.

This week I learned she was stabled (in the last couple years) next to someone from my barn at a competition in Illinois. Her remarks then were odd enough to then to make her stand out. A small (and crazy) world.

This whole thing is too bizarre.

She steals horses. She steals tack. She may have stolen a trailer. She has sticky fingers at the Delray Green Market, and that gets her arrested in early February.

She hides stuff at her place. Then, she stashes more stuff at this "friend's" place, according to several newspaper reports. That is the part that still baffles me (I know, I know..... I need more to worry about in my life...LOL) It is puzzling to me how she managed to pull the wool over this friend's eyes, when by all reports she is well known as a kook at best.

If someone showed up at my place with some goods to park, I would certainly wonder where it all came from. I would think it was strange if someone asked me to babysit a bunch of teak furniture and vases for a while.... Wouldn't most of you?

Now, she professes to be broke, so the court appoints an attorney to handle her case. If she is broke now, she was broke last month when she showed up with all the goodies at the friend's house. Friend must be on another planet too....

Has anyone brought up the possibility she is involved with drugs? There was a trainer around where I have lived before who acted completely bizarre some times and it was a clear result of her cocaine addiction.

Cathy Mance/Crighton is very well known in and around the Chicagoland horse scene. Back in the day she was a polo groom. I as well as many people I know knew her well. She has always been a bit odd. The phone lines have been burning up ever since this story broke. I was talking to my husband and I asked if when he knew her did he think she was capable of all this and he replied "no". She has definately become more anti-social. When Maria was killed I don't think there was ever a doubt in many people's minds who did it. But, it is something that will most unfortunately never been solved. We all think that she quite obviously is mentally disturbed. The vast amount of personalized items that were stolen were all items that she couldn't resell. It seems as though she was just a big pack rat and was quite obviously "screaming for help". While I sympathize with her mental condition, I cannot believe that she could get away with this for so many long years. Hopefully the DNA in Springfield will finally be tested to either prove/disprove whether she was involved. I just would like the Caleels to have some closer if it is at all possible. They have done so much good in Maria's name.

Natty Dread's description of Cathy makes me think of Cathy as the "Equestrian version of A New York City Bag Lady with a Shopping Cart". Hey MAD...its so funny that you said that about a bag lady cuz thats the exact image I get too. Looking at her most unflattering pics in the paper and on the news it would seem so. Where I grew up we had a lady "Crazy Mary" that walked around town with a push cart full of the most bizarre items wearing super big hats festooned with all sorts of extras. She would carry on very loud conversations with invisible individuals. I'm thinking along those lines with this scenario....

Right. So let's see - we have BNTs and BNRs and I guess this "friend" whose house housed some of "the goods" would be called a BNP (big name photographer).

Blue Devil is right on the money in her last post .... you clever thing.

A number of folks are snickering over this BNP/Cathy connection, as this BNP is dour and unpleasant a fair amount of the time. Now it is in black and white for all to see that BNP is none too discriminating in choosing friends either.

Guess that visit from the police gave ole BNP something to think about, huh? And so far, BNP has managed to keep from being identified by name in the newspaper. Some people have all the luck!

Sunday's Palm Beach Post has a more lengthy article detailing Cathy's vet school days, initial work as a vet in Illinois, Caleel's murder, as well some more views from folks who dealt with her previously.

And here is the infamous "artificial coloring of animals" statute (the citation was included on the smoking gun link so I thought I would look it up). Once you read the reg it makes sense, for those of you who remember the chicks, ducks and bunnies who were dyed in "easter colors" craze. It's not specifically related to horses, although it does have the "any animal" notation. Good for the WPB sherrif to throw in the kitchen sink while he was at it,I say!
