Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

  • Well, this is odd behavior :(

Nothing bad really but I just want to share with ya all. Background, I am starting my own braiding and banding business. So, to get my name out, I have been approaching different associations and clubs that put on shows, looking at their advertising rates and the different sponsorships available. I figure a good way to get my name out is to get it in the show premiums and class/championship sponsor list.

Nothing time intensive, if I look at a site and do not readily see ad rates, I email asking to be sent the info. Also, I have emailed some letting them know I am wanting to sponsor, etc.

Here's where the odd behavior is....I have gotten a couple terse replies. The one today was (and I quote)---

    "all located on www.thesiteIemailed.com"

That was it, the entire return email. I never did find the ad rates but I can't say I looked that hard after that lol.

I think if someone wanted to send me money to help me put on a better show, I would be friendlier and definitely make sure they have all the info.

Most have been very nice, in fact, one, the Daffodil Arabian Horse Association was so nice and such a joy to work with, I'm doing a braiding demo and sticking around all weekend to help out at their youth benefit for free. I haven't had to narrow down which shows to send money too because of this though

Some people just don't get how they come across in email. I have a good friend that is a very dear, sweet person- but she always has 10 balls in the air and is not so computer literate. Some of her replies to me come off very terse- and I have to take a step back before responding.

If I were you, for kicks, I would send a really friendly response back and see what happened.

    Something like:

"Thank you so much for your response. I looked on your website and was still unable to locate where you listed your advertising fees. Would you be so kind as to provide me with a link to the page, as I am interested in advertising with xyz."

It certainly doesn't hurt, if for nothing else to see if you again get a rude response, then you can certainly cut your losses with that organization.

You have a good point! Maybe I will try that for their later shows. Unfortunately, I already the decision about and committed to another organizations show. Wish I had more money but I have to follow a strict budget.

      Great thoughts, thank you

One other thing you might do is to create some gift certificates, and if any of your local horse clubs have a silent auction/fund raiser, put in a gift certificate into the auction. I did that, and it did generate more business, and didn't cost me anything other than the ink and paper to print them on.

You've gotten good advice so far!

Your website looks nice and professional. I would add a "calendar of events" page where you list the shows you are attending or are able to attend.

The only thing I would change is as the show season gets under way, take pictures of horses you braid that are in show shape-you do such a LOVELY and GOOD job I just feel that your work would pop out more if it were showcased on short coated or clipped horses. This will come with time though and hey most people will understand that this is February

Sam: A job? Does it pay?
Michael: Nah, it's more of a "we'll kill you if you don't do it" type of thing.
Sam: Oh. I've never liked those.

Also, if any of the associations have websites, see what they charge to put a link to your website on their websites?

And if you are offering to sponsor classes at shows, you might also offer some gift certificates or coupons for a % off to give out as prizes in some of the classes.

                Great website!

Only thing i had to add was that the "links" page the top banner is fine but the main part of the page is off set to the right.

Grataan, thank you so much for that lovely compliment, you made my morning I am planning on redoing the horses, the pinto especially is really a stunner under all that hair! You are right, I do need to put the calender up, I have it on my Facebook for Knotted Pony but not on the website itself.

                  Thanks to everyone else too

I bet it's the browser people are using. I didn't visit the links page but I'll pop over now.

Another possible business opportunity is to hook up with the warmblood evaluation organizers. There are always a need for braiders for the mares and foals being evaluated. I always hire a professional for my horses.

And don't let that dumb e-mail response bother you. I volunteer for a non-profit and get my share of what might be "dumb" questions. But you know what -- just because I can find something easily or it seems obvious to me -- it may not be to others. I make an effort to be unfailingly nice and appreciative of ANYONE who e-mails, particularly someone who wants to be a paid advertiser. It is too bad the respondent was clueless of how important good customer service is key.

I bet it is Firefox!!! Huh...I will tell my crack design gal

I am doing the AWS inspection, thank you for the idea. It is too bad about the lack of customer service! I wonder if it is people just do not know how they come across? If I was new to showing, that sort of response would have made me not go to that show

Ditto on the location. Beautiful work but I have no idea where you are. You may also want to put something in about traveling to shows - and how far you are willing to travel. Or just show up at shows?

Thanks again! I emailed my calender to the gal who does my site (sounds so official, she's actually a really good pal who happens to be good at site design).

I am mainly in western WA, a few in eastern WA and *maybe* a couple down in Albany, OR.

All the encouragement and ideas are great, many thanks

Some people are just untutored in the art(s) of communication. Someday, all the negative results of poor, impolite, and just plain RUDE communications with people they are TRYING to get to give them (money, etc.) MAY sink in. May.

It's off center using Internet Explorer version 6.0 also, just to let you know.

I also took a peek at your Banding page (since I show western), and they look pretty good. My only suggestion is to try to get the manes to look less blunt cut, and to really get the bands even (a few of them don't line up with the ones next to them. Just little nitpicky stuff, in general, you do nice work, and banding is harder than folks think it is.

Yep, some people just seem a little oblivious!

Thanks, Munchkinsmom! I will tell you a little secret....I haven't banded in maybe 10 or 15 years? LOL! So I just showed up and winged it at my pals place 2 weeks ago. I think it is like riding a bike though I agree, a couple are a little off the line.

As far as the cut/blunt/pulled, I can not get a concensus! The halter people all say it should look less blunt, the WP/WR people all said they would trim to look blunt after banding! I think it may just have to be up to the customer, I can do it either way.
