Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

  • What would you do?

Long time reader, first time poster. Just wondering what you guys would do about this situation...

We have gotten slammed here with terrible weather. We can't ride outside due to all the snow and it looks like it is here to stay. We had an indoor, but it caved in recently due to the high winds and the weight of the snow. So, now we have no where to ride.

I am a bit torn. We pay a lot of money to board and I board at this place due to the indoor. I could move my horse to a place that has only an outdoor and pay about $200 less a month.

As I see it, it will take some time to rebuild and the snow is here to stay. This means no riding. Not good for me, and really not good for my horse. He can get a bit batty without work. I've always lived somewhere warm, so I really don't know how to deal with the snow and working my horse.

So, would you move to another barn? Would you expect board to be lowered until the arena is rebuilt since that is what you are paying extra for? How do you approach work in this type of weather?

    That's a tough question.

If I'd been there a really long time, knew the owners well, and wasn't planning on showing until summer, I would probably stick around. I assume it would really hurt the BO's if everyone picked up and left, and I wouldn't do that to someone who had treated me well.

Otherwise, I would probably move my horse to another barn where he could be ridden regularly. Maybe even try to pay a dry stall fee to hold my spot at the other barn (cost permitting).

There's no telling how long it will take to rebuild the indoor. I used to be at a place that same thing happened to - it was out of commission for well over a year (by the time insurance paid them, they hired someone to fix it, etc).

      How is the CARE?

That would be my number one concern.

You can get an indoor...you can get an outdoor...it's the CARE that really counts.

If you suspect that this barn WILL rebuild as weather permits and you're very happy with the care, then I say, suck it up.

      Crap happens....this wasn't your BO's fault.

If the care isn't great and you've been on the fence anyway....if the care is okay but you don't think that they WILL rebuild? Start hunting.

I would still rather keep my horse somewhere where the care is fabulous even if I'm temporarily inconvenienced than jump ship to a crappy place.

If you're willing to ride outdoors...why not just ride outdoors now? You don't need an arena to hack about in the snow. Many of us live in regions where you pretty much hang up on the riding seriously from Nov-April due to the conditions. But you can still work a horse if you really want to.
A good horseman doesn't have to tell anyone...the horse already knows.

Might be a reason, never an excuse...

200 difference is a lot....but I am guessing you didn't pick that barn first for a reason....

Also, to clarify...the majority of my horse years have been spent w/o an indoor..or outdoor for that matter. So I am a little more cool with not being able to ride regularly with much purpose in the winter. (I still enjoy hacking out in the snow though!...and skijoring!)

But that said...I currently board somewhere with a fabulous indoor and fabulous +++ care that I am definitely paying a lot for (compared to other places I've boarded).

If they were to have a massive problem...like the indoor collapsed, there was a fire, whatever...I'd stick with them because I know that my horse would be well cared for.

After bouncing around barn to barn a bit in the last 10 years, the quality of care is so much more important to me than my ability to ride year round.

So please take my input w/ a grain of salt.

Whoa--wasn't there a VERY similar thread here a year or two ago? Except that the indoor was blown away by a tornado or something?

It's been my observation that once one leaves a barn most people and horses turn into wandering nomads!

If you're happy with the way your horse is being cared for I would stay put, but don't look for a reduction in board unless the owners tell you there will be one.... You might ask them one of these days if they plan to rebuild the indoor and then decide based upon their answer, but now is not the time to ask them....

If you think your horse is going to go bonkers when not being exercised then request that his grain be cut in half and add some hay stretcher pellets to his diet in place of the grain (taking care to add some water to the pellets to keep him from becoming impacted, or see if your BO will increase your horse's long stemmed hay supply while he's getting reduced grain rations). You might try the Blue Seal hay stretcher pellets; if I recollect aright they have calcium carbonate in them which should help him stay calmer....

This too shall pass! Nothing lasts forever--even snow mountains....

Have you spoke with the BOs? How long til they rebuild the indoor? Is the indoor ring totally unuseable?

IDK... I think the barn owners need to voluntarily reduce board a bit because they are now offering less facilities than they were before and an indoor is a huge perk in winter, and they are getting more per month in board for offering it. If they have insurance... any difference in their lost revenues will be paid for by their business interruption/ income loss coverage.

You chose this place because of the indoor over places that didn't have one, right?

                    you have options...

rent a front end loader/and fellow/ and clear a riding ring area in a field...

ride out on the trail... once had a student who insisted on starting when the snow fell to soften the fall.. >>.she never did
                    fall,but ....it worked.

trailer out to an indoor /outdoor ring if you need.

get some local snowmobilers to clear your trails...they would be MORE THAN HAPPY to do this for you ...

move (as in to florida>.really only kidding )...but for now, you are stuck in the snow..and its a beautiful ride....and nights over a full moon are awesome >>next is feb 28th

Have a heart-to-heart with your BO

The BO is unhappy with the current situation, too, I assure you.

If you like the care, like the person and, looking around at alternative barns, you think this is where you'd like to stay in the long-term, talk to your BO.

It is reasonable to think that boarders would leave or want a reduced rate without the covered arena. But the mass exodus of money makes it harder to rebuild.

I'd say that if the BO is "on it" and taking steps to get the indoor rebuilt, try to stick it out. If he/she is unwilling to listen to your concerns or makes it sound like she's not doing her best to fix the situation, then you are well within your rights to let her know that you will reluctantly have to find a new place until the problem is fixed.

But please tread carefully and kindly. This sux for the BO, too.

Speaking as someone who was in an identical situation at my last barn:

                              Move.

Like KellyB, in my particular experience, it took OVER a YEAR for the insurance payment to come through and the replacement structure to be finished. And in the meantime, the barn did NOT reduce board.

Stupidly we stuck it out; only to be stymied in the end by the BO putting in far, far too much footing in the new arena, so it was too deep for us to work in.

Finally we got smart and left.

We lost a lot of riding time over that year, and paid a lot of board at a rate that really wasn't justified - I wouldn't do it again.

                                    What about turnout??

I agree with BuddyRoo and several others here. I also live in SE PA and am dealing with the same but since I never had an indoor - I've learned to live without one! I have my guys on 9-12hr turnout and they all come in very tired at the end of the day. The snow wears them out & boy do they play in it!!

In another few weeks this will all be a distant, yet muddy memory and you can get back to work.

Can you trailer out to another barn to rent some indoor time if you are that desperate to ride?
