Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

ah smarties... does any one else remember going to the saturday matinee (always cowboy movies) - buying a pack of smarties, eating them waaay too fast, and then tearing the lid flap off so you could blow into the box when the kissing started?? um, anyone?..
I never thought of them as British either, I guess our heritage runs deeper than I thought!
I can always tell when breeding season begins,.. it is a diet of Hortons, Hortons, chocolate chunk peanut butter cookies, and more Hortons...
a moment of heresy here... I don't actually think the coffee is good.. I swear they have put something into it that has made us all addicted...
      now mounties....
or bicycle policemen.. cherham.. now, they ARE that good looking close up!!

Smarties: the only candy whose packaging becomes a musical instrument!
That really does bring back memories.

I like Tim's coffee. Maybe it's because as a phone repairman, I spent so much time with the guys, drinking coffee, eating donuts, instead of working!

The bicycle cops were definitely one of the perks of working outdoors, in the city, in the summer! MMMMM. Tasty.

less hard work, more fine dining.

Yay, White Spot! Comfort Food to Go! Only in BC though.

They will soon have to dictate exactly how far from an intersection Tim Hortons' can be located. More than once, the intersection on the way to work has been gridlocked against the lights due to people waiting to turn in for the drive-thru in the morning. To me it tastes like it has machine oil in it... oops, I live in Ontario, I think I just dissed as much an icon as the Leafs, the Maple Leaf, the Beaver and the Queen all thrown in one. I too dont understand the addiction that has frightenly taken over Ontarians. It costs more than a million dollars to buy a Franchise, but it is money in the bank! Can you imagine a Timmy's at Palgrave?

              Hi Riggs et al!

I'm with you on the Tim horton's coffee Riggs-not my favourite either-S-Bucks all the way!!! And man, Krispy Kremes get my vote too (horsey related as I heard the franchise is owned by a horsey family!)

BUT I do have a soft spot for Timmies as when my second daughter was a week over due, I had the biggest craving for Timmies!!?? My water broke in the parking lot minutes after I'd put down my cup!! So you see, you've always got time for Tim Horton's!!

Maybe that maple donut contributed some to her birth weight of 10 lbs 8 oz?!

If he is anything like Esprit's mountie, you definitely do. Drooooool.

Riggs, we know what to bring you next time we see you.

Fred, tell us a drive-in story!!! Love to hear it.

Instant mashed potatoes are a Canadian invention - how gross is that? My husband the kartoffelkopf German likes them. White Spot is definitely BC - too bad Closet thing to it is a Denny's in the States but nicer. But, Pay Days!!!! We don't have Pay Days!!!! Riggs, I'll see your Smarties to a Pay Day, any day.

The highest concentration of Tim Horton's is in Nova Scotia - they have one for every block just about. I think it was Halifax. Tim Horton played for the Buffalo Sabers but lived in Toronto. He was killed in a car accident on the QEW on his way back to Toronto after a game.

For us non-beer drinkers, how about a Bloody Ceasar? Impossible to find outside of Upstate New York. Who can do Sunday brunch without a Ceasar?

Another EMG'er checking in (I'm Wally). Here is an example of my far too great bank of useless knowledge:

Tim Horton originally played for the Leafs (they retired his number) and was traded to the Sabres. He actually lived in St Catharines and was on his way home from a game/practice when he was killed. He was so bitter about the trade that he vowed there would never be a Tim's in Toronto. Apparently that changed after his death.

I live in Hamilton (which I could have sworn was the Tim capital of the world) and I do not like their coffee. Can't admit that in public though. But it is time for Frozen Cappuccino's, YUM!

Another interesting bit of smarties trivia:
A few years ago, at Christmas, Eaton's carried GOLD smarties. Yes, really. little chocolate smarties, plated in real gold. They cost a small fortune, but looked stunning, in a crystal candy dish. And, they were edible. Some ancient cultures believed that by eating a bit of gold regularly, you would stay healthy. This is because gold repels bacteria. Why, I don't know. But it does.

                        Hi Wally, long time
(I owned Duke) but not now.
I love Tim's coffee, but sometimes I have had some terrible brews, undrinkable. Of course it was from a drive through, and you are too far away to turn around.
Smarties, are ok, but I love KitKat bars, yum
my horse will stand on his head for a Timbit though.

There is just as much horse sense as ever, but the horses have most of it.

LOL, Fred! I used to love the Smarties box kazoo.

On that note and at the risk of revealing that I'm still a kid at heart, has anyone noticed that blowing into the Smarties box no longer works anymore? Very disappointing. They must have changed the design on us...

WE actually have a White Spot restaurant where I live...it's a greesy spoon aka old fashioned diner with the little burgers. They are famous for their Gus burgers... A mini hamburger with a fried egg on top. Blech...
Of course the Friendly's in Bastun... that I went to years ago with an old flame served fried with melted cheese on top. That was too yummy.
WHat are cheese curds really? I'm thinking of greasy fries with cottage cheese on them. That CAN"T be what you're eating??!!!
And well, I KNOW where the Bostonians R's went. THere is a small group of Virginians that live int eh Tidewater area that have them. They say things like 'What arrah you doing?" HUH?
TO keep this mildly horse related we had an easter egg hunt today... I mananged to find the most eggs desipte having to grab my poor screaming horse out ot the stall and hang graze him. He's on stall rest and was totally LIVID that we would dare play in the yard without him. Spoiled rotten pony.

Cheese curds are basically bits of cheese - white cheese - mozzerella or something.

BC has White Spot - US has White Castle although not the same at all.

                                  I wanna Payday! Wah!

those ice caps are good.. I usually treat myself to one on the way home from collecting the stallion...
Anyone who gots through the drive through at Clappison's - you know those big yellow things? - one of them is on an angle?...well, it came in close contact with a big white suburban... I was on my way really really early, to take Fred to an event.. and I guess I just wasn't quite awake yet... boom! oops, I'm awake now....
and speaking of Horton's, grrrrrrrr THREE YEARS and not one d**n donut in the roll up to lose, er, win.
                                    Hi wally!

note to newcomers: notice the occasional, subtle references to horses ?...this is a horse related bb, so, if you want the thread to continue, it needs to be at least nominally horse related!

I'm a big Timmies drinker...and hadn't won anything in 3 years. Of course on my way home Saturday morning, I got a coffee and rolled my rim as I drove in to the gas station to check my Super 7 ticket...and wouldn't you know, i won a donut. I mean, I'm grateful to win something, but I knew right then and there that I was out 21 million

To make it horse related, the 21 M was going to be my horse fund.
